PL 2016-2017 Thread

I'll be honest of course I care about the result this weekend, but I would much rather Spurs had beaten Bournemouth and West Brom and then lost to Arsenal. It's no good beating Man City and the other top teams if you can't beat the relegation strugglers. It's the same every season. I'd happily sacrifice the "big" games for some consistency. As it's away from home and there are several major injuries (Kane/Alderweireld/Dembele) I reckon it's Arsenal's game this weekend. Would be nice to see them put up a good fight though.

Whatever disparity between the sides on the day, be it form, injuries or perceived quality on paper of the teams there are rarely thrashings either way. I obviously want us to win but doubt there'll be more than a goal in it either way

I saw an interesting stat yesterday, apparently the team who scores first has failed to win this derby on about the last 10 occasions!

I'll take a draw against Arsenal any time but I think either team could have nicked it, pretty even on the whole. Would have loved to see Son score when Cech tripped over, it would have been nice payback for when Danny Rose did it in the same fixture a couple of years ago.

So can Liverpool go top today?

Well despite us edging the possession and shots on target a draw is a very fair result given the overall game, not a bad match either! It'll certainly keep the peace over the Christmas dinner in my household

Really? I thought it was pretty underwhelming. I got bored and started channel hopping in the first half. The second half was better but i wouldn't call it a good game.

Pool looked very good today, as did Chelsea on Friday night.

Arsene Wenger as deluded as ever:

It is disappointing to drop two points at home. Spurs go home happy, we go home and are not happy.

Dropping two points at home is drawing with a relegation struggler, not drawing with the only remaining unbeaten team. Arguably it is Spurs that have dropped points. I think most Arsenal fans will be happy with a draw too, Arsenal had some great chances for sure but so did Spurs. Not sure which game he was watching

Afer the discussion about Southampton this has come up on BBC Sport and is very interesting

So glad to see the PL back again, international football is ****ING DULL.

I don't know if it's just me, but as I get older I care less and less about it. TBH right now, I wouldn't even be bothered if they scrapped it.
The European Champs have been ruined by being expanded, and UEFA will never revert to what it was, cos that wiuld be admitting the made a mistka eand those biys in the ivory towers don't make mistakes. It's just us plebs who don't realise how a bigger Euro's actually amazingly better. Even though there were TWO decent games in the whole of the last tournament, and the vast majority of games were mind achingly dull. The WC is overblown anyway and heading toards further expansion.

Some day soon people will stop watching and UEFA and FIFA will be left scratching their heads. They'll probably decide further expansion is the solution.

Roll on the return of the PL.

I agree the older I get the less appealing international football becomes, think I look forward to the Europa league more now and who would have thought a Man Utd supporter would admit that. The format for the Euros ain't great but it was the exact same format for Italy 90', was that a bad tournament or just more quality in a World Cup. It was the only tournament England have ever reached a semi final abroad in and Cameroon reached the quarterfinals so perhaps not!

It's all about money anyway, more teams means more money simple.

Glad premeirship is back anyway.

Absolutely. Which is why the CL is killing European football. UEFA have it set up so that someone who gets into the group stage and loses all six games still gets more prize money than the Europa league winners. Explain the logic in that?
Add in the needless seeding and the fact it's a group stage and you can pretty much pick the two teams who are going to qualify from each group. I dare say if you asked any footy fan he or she would get 13/14/15 of the 16 sides. That's excitement right there. Nothing better than watching a big European team winning 3-1 in third gear against someone like Anderlecht.
Once your side isn't in the CL, you very quickly realise just how dull it is. The knock out stages are a lot better, but even then the seeding means the big sides tend to be kept apart until the end.
Either go the whole hog and have a European super league or stop seeding the CL draw. Either way it's another competition whose popularity is on the wane.

Ohh and yeah Italia '90 wasn't that good a tournament, apparently. I think the back pass rule was brought in soon after it cos the games were so dull. Teams just rolling it back to the keeper who would roll it out to the defender and attacking sides could do nothing about it. Although it's the first WC I remember so I do tend to look back on it favourably.

Feel a bit sorry for West Ham losing that game after leading twice, but it's about time Spurs had some luck, or should I say just what they deserve (5th place shouldn't be losing to 17th at home.) And that penalty against Spurs was ridiculous anyway, especially considering the WH defence did it to Spurs players twice without getting penalised. I think that makes about 8 penalties given in his last 7 games, needs to lay off the trigger finger and remember it's a contact sport.

On the subject of international football I think there is a bit of magic around the world cup and Euros, no matter how bad we are I always look forward to them. I really don't see why it needs to interfere with league football though, can't they just train and play the qualifiers during the summer?

Agree about the European leagues, it's a flawed system anyway, if it was truly about the best teams playing each other it wouldn't feature the minnows who qualify by default just for being the 'best' teams in **** leagues (Celtic!)

Right result for me, I do think Spurs deserved it overall. If I were a West Ham fan though I'd be annoyed, not for any injustice, I think it evened out through the match decisions wise, but to keep getting ahead and letting us back in it every time is beyond frustrating... I've obviously been on the other side of that too many times.
Can't wait for our defense to be back to full strength though... mistakes are going to cost us heavily sooner than later!

Just seen the end of WH spurs. Randolp dropped a bollock for the equailser. Piss poor keeping. Right at the end of a london derby when you're winning away from home that was only ever going to give the other side a massive boost. I thought Spurs penalty was a penalty. Why the defender went to ground i'll never know. STAY ON YOUR FEET. Muppet.

I thought WH's pen was a little soft. Yes, there was holding, but not a huge amount. Those sorts of pens were given in first few weeks then they stopped, now apparently they are being given again. Consistency.

As for the non penalty on Kane in second half, correct decision for me. Two blokes holding each other off and going for the ball, not a pen.

Good result for Spurs (and city) with Pool, Arse and Utd all drawing. Shaping up to be a very interesting title race this year.

Ohh and that Utd Arsenal game was dire. I only saw the first 45 mins but it really was like watching paint dry.

Well that was literally one of the worst games I've ever seen, no idea what Spurs were doing, they looked like clowns. I wonder how different it would have been if they had played their 'home' games at WHL, playing at Wembley is nice and all but it basically meant they have only played away games. No excuses for tonight though, utter crap.

Spurs where utterly dreadful last night.
I was watching the game without the sound on (missus was watching master chef and kept complaining  ) so I assumed Vertongen was injured, I mean it's game you need to win so why would you rest one of your first choice CB pairing (with the other injured)!? It's absolute madness. It reminded me of when Brendan rested Gerard, Sterling and a few others for the trip to Real Madrid. He wanted them fresh for the upcoming PL game. That's it, save your players so they can be fresh for the league game at the expense of the CL so you can maximise your chances of getting back into ehhh the competition you have just sacrificed being in.
That kind of retarded logic is why Brendan was laughed at by so many people. I thought Pochetino was a great manager, now I'm really not sure. That is genuinely one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen.
It's on a par with "Here do you wanna buy this multimillion pound lottery ticket for a fiver, so I can buy another and hope I win!?"

Spuds looked woeful though, WTF Trippier was doing for the second goal I'll never know, Call the CB over to that forward and MARK YOUR OWN ****ING MAN. As for Son with that 1 on 1, dear god man, shoot. You are a striker and one on one with the keeper in the first half of a game you must win WTF are you doing going to the corner flag? You thinking you could hold the ball up in there for the next hour and UEFA will give you a bonus 3pts for being dead smart!?

I worried that Leicester would be an embarrassment in the CL, but fair dos they have done well. I still think they'll be blown away by one of the proper big boys but given a kind draw in the knock round they should make the quarter finals. Arsenal will obviously lose in the first knock round, probably after Wenger plays a weakened team tonight and loses, thus forfeiting winning the group and then drawing Real/Dortmund in the knock out round.
Spuds though have been a complete and utter embarrassment to English football. It's as if their reserves turned up. They look great in the PL, in the CL they look more out their depth than Joey Essex on University Challenge.
I expected so much more from them.

Agreed, it reminded me of the Newcastle game on the last game of last season. Just looked completely out of their depth, which we know they're not because top 4 in the PL these days is no easy task, there are at least 7 or 8 serious contenders every season unlike the French and Spanish leagues.

I think the group they were in was pretty unlucky to be honest, would rather have had Arsenal's group with one giant and two you've never heard of rather than three lesser known but solid teams.
