I purchased a cardback (nothing special, just a common ROTJ) and paid 99p plus £2 postage (2d class) which I think is the maximum I'd pay for this type of item unless it was a very sought after card then I'd accept a little more but would then expect padded envelope and additional insert of cardboard (which I always do myself anyway).

Incidentally I had also purchased a single cardback from this seller the week before and I paid £1.50 postage and it was sent padded 2nd class large which I was obviously perfectly happy with.

Seller contacts me today and asks if I could pay another 80p as unexpectedly RM have charged him £2.80!! and he wants to cover all of his expense.

Firstly I am very surprised that a single CB has cost this much as having sent and received many myself it shouldn't cost anymore than £1.20 and is normally just accepted as large 1st or 2nd class.

I've prepared my response and am leaning towards declining his request and have actually queried the amount which I think is too excessive for this item, surely the post office have made a mistake? I've also stated that it's not my fault he has miscalculated the postage and that when I've had a similar situation I've never gone back to a buyer to request further funds as it's just not right.

Thoughts please?

Not your problem, I've mis-quoted for postage a load of times and taken a hit, but that's my fault not the buyers. I don't even tell them that I paid more for the postage, tbh I'm surprised he had the front to ask you for it.

Stick to your guns Stephen - don't pay the extra.

I've sometimes under-estimated postage costs on Ebay (my fault, as the seller I take the full responsibility for the listing and pay the difference) I would never ask the buyer to stump up the cash for my error.

Yep I too have under estimated for postage several before but just take it on the chin. Its very cheeky to ask the buyer to pay the difference IMO

It seems like we are dealing with the same seller. I purchased 2 cardbacks from this guy the other day. I asked was it possible to combine the postage inorder to save a little, got the following reply -

"Hello Kieron,

Unfortunately we do not offer combined shipping for items.
You will need to pay for these two items separately.

Regards

Fair enough, I wasn't happy about paying £4 for postage but sent payment.

Today I got the following message -

"Dear Kieron,

Due to price increases in shipping at Royal Mail I have to unfortunately ask you for a further payment of £1.60. This includes both you have bought. So total is £1.60.

This is due to Royal Mail charging more for large protective envelopes which your Star Wars card back will be in.

Please pay through PayPal to and send as a gift otherwise I will be charged again. I am so sorry and apologise for the inconvenience caused but I did not expect your Cardback to cost £2.80.

Very best regards

Gary

Obviously after reading this I was a little pissed off, but rather than having a go at the guy I sent the following firm, but reasonable reply -

"Dear garrr2,

Hi, I'm sorry but I will not be sending any further postage money, having already paid £4.00 for the postage of 2 card backs I feel that is more than adequate to cover the cost of an envelope and first class stamp. If you do not wish to complete the transaction then please issue a full refund of all monies paid.

Thanks

"

To which I received the following reply -

"Dear kieatky,

From the start I have found your attitude towards our two transactions presumptuous. I do not combine shipping In case any are lost. As Royal Mail is not infallible and mishaps happen. So I send items out separately.

Secondly your card backs are in brand new hard backed large self seal envelopes which protect your card back from damage in the post. These I assume are for yourself for your collection. These have been stored by me for 32 years and I hope you wanted them to arrive to you in the same condition they left me. These envelopes are not free or cheap.

Thirdly your card backs Marc have been shipped second class to keep YOUR cost down. The £ 2.80 cost is just for the postage. This is on the envelope. This does not cover the cost of your protective hard back envelope. I suggest when you get your card back to take it to your local post offices to get it weighed and they will tell you the cost which is £2.80.

Enjoy your card backs. They have been shipped.

I appreciate people can underquote postage charges but it's a case of live and learn. Still not replied to the above message as I'd likely be reported for excessive use of 4 letter words

Yes Kieron it's the same guy and what a twat  I've had a reply back too and whilst the tone is not as aggressive as yours he still comes across as a first class tool :!: £4 for 2 cardbacks is way too steep (at least I know who beat me to those other cards and I'm glad I didn't win them now  ) What's he bloody sending them in bomb proof packaging :!: :!:

My response and his reply.

garrr2

Due to price increases in shipping at Royal Mail I have to unfortunately ask you for a further payment of £0.80. Total is 80p.

My polite reply

I'm a little surprised that RM have charged you £2.80 for this item, it shouldn't cost more than a first/second class large stamp or £1.20 at the most. I've sent and received many CB's and have never seen them priced that high. Perhaps your Post Office has made a mistake?

The last CB you sent me only cost the price of a second class large stamp and I don't recall any increases in prices since March/April. What size envelope have you used?

If I'm honest I'm a little surprised that you have come back to me and asked for this additional payment as the agreed price was £2. In the past I've miscalculated but have never gone back to a buyer to request further payment, I've just taken the hit and accepted the situation for what it is.

If the postage was any higher I wouldn't have bid as the card isn't worth that value and I couldn't have justified paying more.

If you still have the card then you can cancel the order and refund me the payment otherwise my apologies as I wont be paying the additional 80p as I don't think it's right or fair.

His reply

Thank you for the rather long pointless message. Your item has been shipped this afternoon in new hard backed self sealed envelopes to keep it from being damaged these were not free. Enjoy

One for the block list as I think he'll only cause more trouble......

I agree mate, the guy is a complete tool :D

I received his message whilst at work, I'd bin stuck in a soul destroying British Gas annual motivational meeting crap fest at Cheltenham races all day so this gave me a little chuckle and broke up what was otherwise a very dull day

Now now Richard. Why use 12 words when you can use 200.

A man of my own heart.

Cheers Ben

My response

Not sure why you've come back with the attitude. I suggest in future you work out your postage before listing your item. No doubt I will enjoy the cardback and I will also enjoy reusing the hard backed self sealed bomb proof envelope you have so kindly sent me ;-)

I'm awaiting the abusive response :D

Lmao

Haha, he will have bought those envelopes in bulk anyway, he is already milking postage with not combining shipping.

what an arse.

Very strange - I recently put some cardbacks up on eBay in 8's. I purchased the hardback envelopes @ £1.75 for 10 and postage cost for each bundle (8 cards) first class was £1.20 - so I don't know how he can say it cost him £2.80

As for not combining shipping - that is just a scam plain and simple. To be honest now that eBay charge you 10% and PayPal 4% + 20p for each transaction then you can often be better off combining postage and getting it all paid on one invoice - especially for low value items

This guy is a complete tool and I hope you left him negative feedback!

I think unless he actually states in the auction that the postage price isn't fixed then he can't ask for more. Even I've sucked it up on postage when I've under charged and never once had the brass neck to ask for more.

Have the CBs arrived yet? I'd be interested to see what the packaging was like and how much it cost him.

Anyway, neg him and neg him hard (ooer).

Does eBay make it hard for these idiots to combine postage, or is it plain ignorance or maybe Greed!

ebay has introduced new steps that make it much harder for buyers to request combined postage. This way they make more money. I get a message at least once a day from a customer saying they are unable to request a total for their order and are getting charged 3, 4, times the postage. It's incredibly annoying.

Yeah, I have noticed this too Pete - I don't know why some buyer can ask for a combined invoice and some can't but either way it is definitely a pain in the arse

I get a message at the end of each listing saying that I need to offer a combined postage deal but I don't see how you can - if someone buys a something with postage of £5 and their next purchase is a large item @ £15 postage then how can you put something in place to combine them - it only works if postage costs are the same for every item that you sell

I still can't get over the fact that eBay take 10% of the postage costs - it is disgraceful
