Copied them (and brightened some of them) to save tediously opening up each link separately.

That's what I love to see. If it wasn't for the small matter of having to remove all the hanger cut outs I would display my cards this way. Only thing is I never remember toy shop shelves having such variety. Just remember about a million Jabba playsets and racks full of common Jedi figures, ewoks etc. Nothing exciting like die casts, or 3 packs

3 Packs were only available in North America (I think). This looks like a BIG toy store hence the range - remember this is America too where they like to do everything bigger!

Americans had 3 packs, but we had Palitoy :D

In the last pic, Madine doing what he knows how to do best - Peg Warming.

The variety got poorer has the years went on I found, it was very difficult to get certain SW or ESB figures from 1983 onwards.

Yeah togheter with that other amazing character - Admiral Ackbar.... Hey they but come with a special Unique stick.

I saw those pictures before, they are just amazing.. If we only could go Back in time.....

I can guarantee 3 packs were available in the UK. A toy store in Barnsley absolutely 100% had them, I vividly remember picking one up and being blown away by a three pack of Star Wars figures "but" this was after the Jedi. They had loads of Star Wars and Empire sets which were heavily discounted as was all of his Star Wars stuff at that time.

So what happened when the new ESB or Jedi came along? You can see in the photos that by the time the shelves were stocked with Jedi toys there were no ANH and very few ESB logos. Where stock is unsold does it go back for repackaging or is it just binned?

I always felt annoyed in the later years 83,84,85 with the reverse of the cardback saying collect all 79! or whatever...yeah fat chance of that if you were late in the game most of the ANH and ESB were impossible to find as they assumed (wrongly) all kids had the earlier figures and only wanted the Jedi ones.

My friend started late collecting and he struggled to get any of the earlier figures, which I already had.

Not that I could guarantee this is what happened then, but today a team of Merchandisers (that work alongside the Buyers) would be working throughout the season on stock forecasts and approving orders etc to TRY to have minimal overstocks as one line ends and another replaces it, best case selling through without discount and without a noticeable period of out of stock too...

Other mechanisms in bigger retailers would be to consolidate the remaining older lines to stores with a better rate of sale as the line is being replaced or to link the lines, so that as one line of packaging sells it the new version is ordered in its stead, helping transition between the two. WHSmith for example might change from blue calculators to red ones in September, as a consumer its unlikely you'd notice the change, but a huge amount of work goes into managing and predicting the switch... storing new stock you don't want to sell yet or old stock that no one will want (if newness is available) can often cost more than the money made on the line in a season if you get it wrong

The only things (that I know of) that today come with fairly open-ended return options are books, newspapers and magazines, certainly not toys...

Wow, I could look at these pics all day and not get bored. 8)

I spy a ROTJ Chief Chirpa, so my question is:

'Jez, do you have a ROTJ Chief Chirpa yet??'

:D :D :D

I've had a collection in from a man that was responsible for all the Lego shop displays from the 1970s to the 1990s (he also worked with Hasbro on the Episode I displays) and he kept a photo archive of a lot of his displays...

Look what I spotted in the background of one of the photos.

they were just peg warmers. the proof of this is that you find lobot on esb cardbacks with the potf boba fett sticker offers on it.
