latest film/ dvd you have seen

I love Asian cinema, Korean especially is brilliant, anything by Kim Ki Duk, Old Boy is a great film too I think anyone on here would enjoy that. Plus Audition if you like squemish horror. Ichi the Killer too, the original Ring. Plus, if you don't mind anything a bit older Onibaba, Woman of the Dunes and Seven Samurai are three of my favourite films.

even Samurai by Kurosawa inspired Magnificent seven plus another of his films, Hidden Fortress inspired STAR WARS, which if you watch it, the way it cuts between scenes and the story about 2 comedy characters (ala c3po and r2) escourting a princess though a war to safety is really obivous. I have it on DVD, think there may even be a Lucas documentary on it if I remember.

Heard the original "Ring" (that is the Japanese one) is supposed to be better/scarier than the US remake!?

I've still got Rocky Balboa to watch and the 40 year old virgin then I will finally be upto date with my film collection.

Then in the next few months I will be looking forward to Die Hard 4, Spiderman 3 and The Simpsons !! 8)

We don't go to the cinema that often....usually wait until DVD.

Ive always found Hidden Fortress to be closer to Phantom Menace outside the droids of Star Wars. A queen/princess disguised on the run from a war. Qui-Gon even looks like Mifune's Samurai General charactor.

George Lucas wanted Toshiro Mifune as a early suggestion while working on the old Ben Kenobi.

Bloody hell yeah. Ringu is terrifying! I'm not that receptable to horror movies normally. I bought it... ive only bloody watched it once. messed up. Alot of hollywood horror has kinda watered it down now by using the same visual tricks to death.

Wouldn't mine going to see that new Danny Boyle film 'Sunshine'. Same bloke who did Trainspotting and 28 Days Later.

Sunshine looks good, although the ending is supposed to let it down.


Anyone read "Porno" (the book, not a porno mag! :wink: ) it's the follow up to Trainspotting. Keep hearing rumours thay are going to make it into a film as well.

Can't see Mifune as Ben... he always seemed to play the fool/comedy element. The lead samurai in Seven Samurai would have been a more obvious character to base him on the bald quite thoughtful leader.

First half of 28 days later was really good, I thought it lost its way once they made it to the military base though.

Ringu is definitely better than the ring, theres something about the footage which is genuinely creepy. Japanese horror in general is pretty good, allthough it does tend to leave you lost at times thinking wtf's happening now??

Ben Kenobi/Mace Windu was one of the same charactor i think at one point. Mace is bit more serious strict teacher like charactor. By the 70s/80s even the mid 60s Toshiro Mifune with age was playing those reserved mentor parts.
There was a scene in Revenge of the Sith where Yoda rubs his head in thought. Which is a charactistic of Kambi (Lead Samurai) after hes had his head shaved from Seven Samurai. Even the way he does it is spot on. Lucas wanted to pay a little homage.

Yeah, true. But its a bit of a intentional anticlimax. The army barracks are not the salvation they thought it was. I didn't want the movie turning into Platoon personally. Thought Christopher Eccleston was fantastic as the slightly unhinged C.O. Didn't help they included a interesting bolted on ending (research centre after the barracks) on the DVD extras. All restrictions of not having enough money to make films in the UK.
The films kinda improved with repeat viewings to me. The whole of Manchester (Directors home town) is a blaze because there no fire crews to but it out, after the city evacution.
The basic idea is far more scary than zombies. People infected with pure rage. The idea supposidly riffed of the back of 'Foot n Mouth' outbreak in 2001.

Reminds me of that WWII Submarine movie couple of years ago. Hollywood re-write history. We cracked the bloody German Enigma code, thankyou very much. :evil: bloody cheeky outer colonies.. :wink:

Well, according to that film forget what it was called (U157 maybe), they also cracked the Enigma code BEFORE they even joined the war.
While they were still sat at home enjoying having intimate relations with their siblings, one their subs managed to capture the machine and break the code!

'This is England' a film by Shane Meadows..

Love Shane Meadows films, Dead Mans Shoes is the best british film in years for me, watched This is England the Other night and another top top film. Set in the early 80's around the falklands about the emergance of the national front, funny in parts and then like so many of his films shocks you and makes your skin turn cold... great soundtrack too, loads of ska and punk. I'd recommend any Shane Meadows film especially Dead Mans Shoes and Room for Romeo Brass best british director around at the moment.

I watched Pirates of the Caribean 2 on friday night.
I wasn't impressed. It takes forever, longer than LOTR's for god sake. It didn't really feel like much was happening either, I was waiting for the end from about an hour in. Plus it just seemed to be made to allow them to make another sequel.
As for that scene with the wheel from the mill, they roll about 27 miles before the things tips over.

I got Casino Royale out as well, but after POTC I was almost asleep so didn't watch it.

Don't think I'll bother going to see the third one!

I really liked Phone Booth and I think it was very underated.

A really good film, but did you not think that the ending was a bit weak in comparison to the rest of the film?

I have recently watched Saw III for the second time. Definitely better then the second Saw despite the pit of syringes.

Getting a bit worried about the fact that my chap doesn't seem keen on going to the cinema to see Spiderman 3; he wants to wait for DVD!

I may have to take my nephew, whether he likes it or not!
