latest film/ dvd you have seen

READY PLAYER ONE

Finally got to see this having (admittedly) been putting it off due to both the over the top geek hype and a genuine fear I'd hate it for being too sycophantic to all things 80's... but... its actually OK, maybe better than OK actually, decent even.

The acting is poor throughout, the effects are in most cases over the top and a little jarring, the direction (shockingly for something with Spielberg attached) is pretty poor too, but somehow it clings to itself and comes out as an OK movie that just about judged the right level of schmaltz without making me feel sick.

The one thing it does do very well is immerse you in a cartoon without realising your just watching a cartoon really and on that score it beats the much higher praised Avatar hands down for me. The overall storyline makes sense of sorts too, so it really is watchable.

Absolutely I'd watch it again, but would rather watch a true 80's classic such as Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club.. or anything by John Hughes actually before-hand though to get all the 80's references I could ever want of need in a less force-fed (and dumbed down) way.

Just watched the new Jurassic Park (Fallen Kingdom.) what a huge pile of steaming ****. They've turned it in to Sharknado, absolute garbage.

So, you liked it then?

I didn't think it was THAT bad. Reeks of a franchise that has been bled to death, but then it's not alone in that. I can think of a certain other one we all like that is the same.

Totally agree. Hated it! Liked the last one...

DARKEST HOUR

Sat down last night, on what felt like an appropriate date to watch it at long last.

Broadly disappointed by this... however, I feel that this is the case because it was so heavily hyped as a 'great piece of film making', which it is not.
Overly dark in exposure, with no real reason to be so, the mood set wasn't that engaging either. It was a very good performance (to a point) by Oldman, but even that started to grate after a period, so not a great one by any measure; the best bit of the entire film for me being the tube scenes where he redeemed the portrayal and actually touched greatness, but one scene a movie does not make.

Sorry, I just don't think its as good as you're meant to think it is... having said that its not terrible and the subject holds gravitas and of course its a 1,000 times better than the utter tripe that was Dunkirk, but I'm growing ever more bored by critical acclaim being heaped on the average to decent out there.

The Predator - Hmm, well I have been hoping that at some point this franchise will come full circle & be great again, it ain't happened yet :|

Entertaining enough but FFS Alien & Predator are such easy subject matter to make the greatest films from, so many awesome books out there to draw from & we get this ? Meh!

Yeah I watched that, pretty bad. Who thought of putting a caracter in a Predator film that's got tourettes? Really bad.

Not seen the new Predator film, heard it was ****. Not surprised. You summed my feelings up quite well.

The last 2 Alien films have been a massive let down, considering it was Ridley Scott directing. I've seen the most recent one two or three times, long flights, and I still couldn't tell you how many main characters there were. There were so many, and they were so bland and anodine and more importantly, I didn't give a **** about any of them.
The two films before that (Resurrection and Alien 3) were pish as well.
I've lost track of how many Predator films there are, there was an Alien v's Predator abomination too. Bar the first two Predator films they have been woeful.

Surely, with their obsession for remakes, and sequels Holywood must eventually fluke on a decent script. Or is it asking too much for someone to realise the originals were brilliant despite not being high budget. They had character and suspense, not big advertising budgets, fancy explosions and CGI.

The Wolf of Wallstreet, amazing film, absolutely bonkers and chaotic but with good pacing, seen it several times now and still never fails to make me laugh at some scenes.

Cocaine, hookers, money, power, everything a man wants!

Bohemian Rhapsody

I'll be honest, I have never even thought of myself as a Queen fan, or even someone that liked Queen... in fact to me, growing up, they were always an old man's band from before my time, that were all noise and nonsense. Not quite a rock band and not 'cool' or soulful, so I dismissed them entirely in my teens and 20's/early 30's. A friend of mine convinced me to listen to them around 10-12 year's ago and to my surprise, I liked them more that I thought I did, still not gonna claim to be a fan though.

So, this comes out at the flicks and the world and his wife suddenly profess to be not just a fan, but the world's biggest ever fan(s) of 'rock Gods' Queen... makes my skin itch and I avoid the opening weeks of this biopic, if anything, just to not be that guy that also suddenly loves Queen.

What a mistake, get involved, even with a sketchy interest in them as is mine, this film will give you a new perspective and appreciation for what is/was a fairly important and game changing act in their own time. Layer in to all of this the story of Freddie Mercury coming into existence, his never ending love affair, those around him, the later implosion and sad end to this (often) tortured artist's life and you've got a great story to sit and enjoy.

Film making is excellent, photography is great, sets and costumes are a total triumph. The acting is pretty good too, Freddie, Roger and Brian in particular all blend a very good impression with actual acting and emotion throughout, so you can believe they are who they're portraying without feeling you're watching a Rory Bremner show!

The guy that introduced me to Queen is no longer with us, died of HIV related heart failure a few year's back and there was something very poignant about seeing this film and thinking about him. Maybe it influences my opinion, or maybe it really was a truly wonderful film.

Anyway, recommended by me and one I'll watch again on BluRay when it comes out for sure.

Totally agree with all of the above Steve, I did see it and "reviewed" it the first week it came out and immediately ordered the Blu-ray when I got home.
As I mentioned previously there were some exclusions and exaggerations, as most films have, but even as an old (and I mean age and time :D ) Queen fan I could look through them.
In a way it's right that this brought back memories of your friend that is no longer with us.
Can't wait for the Blu ray to come out and have a few drinks and a sing along to some great tracks!

As it's Christmas we've had a bit of a seaonal theme going on and seen two Tom Cruise films.

Firstly "Made in America" which is based on the true life story of a pilot, smuggler and chancer (any resemblance to Han is coincidence  )
A bit predictable but a fun way to spend a few hours, I was surprise at how much I enjoyed it.
I would recommend giving it a go.

Secondly "Mission impossible Fallout", this should need no introduction and is the same well trodden story that is the MI franchise.
But that said, it has all the normal twists and turns that you would expect, great stunts and stunning scenery.
Well worth a watch for anyone that enjoys this franchise and again would recommend it to anyone with a passing intrest.

So as already mentioned a very festive few evenings, not, but all the better for it!

I concur. Tom Cruise films are very hit & miss. This was hit. A solid little film.

They shall not grow old - amazing film by Peter Jackson, watch it.

I watched this as well, TBH I was disappointed. They have done very well with colourising (is that the word?) the black and white footage and changing the speed ratios thing, but there was very little stricture to it. It was just various interviews/comments and snippets of footage patched together. There wasn't really any in-depth description of the war. Maybe I am being harsh because I have seen a fair few documentaries on it and read plenty about it, but I just felt it could have been a lot better than it was.
