Herge's Tintin rasist and dangerous for kids????

Just read an article that a library in Stockholm Sweden are getting rid of Tintin comics...(!!!)
The reason for it is that the comics are not suitable for kids, they are afrofobic and give the wrong impression of non-western culture...
In Sweden, the books had forewords that explained/warned that these comics were done in a different time, with a different mindset than we have now.
But apparently this isn't enough, they are saying kids don't understand nuances like that and will skip the foreword and be corrupted by the comics.
I didn't care about how people were portrayed in the comics when I was a kid, I loved the comics, they were COMICS!!!! And they were COMICAL!!!!
They had humour, they had adventure, they had passion, they had life!
What has happened to us? A comic is getting thrown out of a library for being a comic.....Sensorship....in Sweden....in 2012.....

It's the same here mate. I've heard of examples where kids aren't aloud to make mothers day card, incase it upsets kids without mum's. Not aloud to make christmas cards or have a nativity play in case it offends kids from non christian faiths. They even banned school sports day in some parts because losing is unfair on kids, and winning is not important!.
We had a similar thing here when the golliwog was removed from 'Noddy' books, and 'Robertsons' jam jar lids.

I can see how one of his books TinTin in the Congo, can be visually incorrect as to how the native race are drawn, so I can see a reasoning for withdrawing that title, but a blanket ban on such a reknowned artist/storyteller is just laziness.

I had a Gollywog as a kid but can also understand why they were removed from the Jam Jars and Noddy books

Ah, the world is going to hell in a hand-basket, the political & ethical issues are important I know, but to the point of loss of self :? where it will end we don't know & I for one do not want to know as its a dark place for sure.

Before you know it we will all be drinking ethnically challenged coffee & wearing straight jackets for our own safety & the systems peace of mind.

I read an article where an office worker who collects pigs (soft toys/ceramics etc) & had one on her desk at work had to remove it due to the fact that it was offensive to Muslims within her work environment :|

I am no racist, I have afro Caribbean & Jamaicans in my own close family, but I can see a lot of bad feeling coming to this & other countries if more is not done to curb the way things are progressing, as a for instance off the top of my head & one I have contemplated a few times - equality in the work place, IE - I moved away from Leicester a couple of years back & its a very multi cultural town, one of the places I go to buy car parts has an all Asian/Indian work force, there must be 40 people work for this company at a bear minimum & not one white/black or yellow face, same goes for at least 5 or 6 other companies I can think of in Leicester, at least one all black & one all Chinese, now if it were an all white work force would something be said about equal opportunities.

& things done to protect children's safety (the governments/councils possibility of being sued more like IMHO) - playgrounds - WTF has happened to playgrounds?, they used to have a multitude of cool things like high swings/high slides & various other apparatus where one could "possibly" get hurt on, but IMO that's part of the growing process, scuff your knees a few times, get a few bruises - it makes you consider the possible larger dangers in life down the line, all this molly coddling will get us nowhere IMO & what about all the things now not allowed in schools & even in your own time for children? -

Penny for the guy - banned as regarded as begging, WTF??, but its Ok for them all to go begging door to door (Halloween) & piss you off 20 X's a night in your own home?

Conkers - a danger - when/where & how?, bar the odd scuffed knuckle, which lets face it will kill you right?.

Bar bar Green Sheep - give me a break!, just how many green sheep have you guys seen? :? - you get black sheep, its a fact!, I presume if your the odd one out you're now the Green sheep of the family.

Wohoo, the library has revised their decision and is keeping the comics, long story short, the library felt the decision was rash and not thought out to well,
even the guy on the frontline on the issue, has revised his comments and says he wanted to raise a debate on discrimination issues but realizes it's wrong
to remove literature. And the guy is black.
Removing/burning/sencoring books....3rd reich anyone? :roll:

It's stupid, I had Tintin books and a Gollywog but am anything but racist. Blame retarded parents that bring their kids up to be racist. If a parent can explain to a child why Tintin may be viewed as racist, there is no problem. All jokes/comedy are at the expense of somebody, should we ban jokes too?

Iain you are so right, my family is mixed, my other half and her daughter are black while little chubb is mixed race. Anyway we invited one of his friends over for dinner, a cute little chap he was. While we are all eating dinner we started telling a few jokes, all child friendly considering our young guest.

Anyway after a few jokes I dropped a 'whats black and white and red all over?' joke. Once this was done it obviously triggered a memory in our little guest who jumped up declaring he knew a joke too, so he proudly and loudly started telling his joke,

Well when we picked our jaws up from the floor we advised him not to tell that joke again and had a chuckle about it once he went home.

The poor lad, he did not have a clue what he had said, obviously quoting a joke he had heard from an elder at home. What chance has he got of not developing a prejudice mind even going to a well mixed school. What goes on at home is far more influential than most other things in a kids life...

Having said that weren't the Tin Tin books used Catholic propaganda in Belgium before becoming less political during Nazi occupation of Belgium (to stay under the radar) then becoming more universal after the war even preaching the ideals of acceptance therefore becoming the opposite of what they are claimed to be. The early racial stereotyping in Tin Tin was due to ignorance rather than promoting racially based messages.

Yeah I'm reading the Mysterious Island by Jules Verne and it has a black character in it, he's currently getting on really well with an orangutan they have trained, the book basically says it's cos the two are so similar in intellect. No chance that would be allowed today.
