Possibly - I think one thing they lack which would back it up is world class signings. I mean they have Gerarrd but he's home grown - who has been their biggest most high profile signing, preseason you here the fans talking off Raul and then they sign Crouch and Kuyt who are top players no doubt but not top top world stars. Schevchenko's ronaldinho Zidanne I think in fairness even Utd struggle in this sense, Rooney and Ferdinand were domestic transfers - probably the biggest named foreign import being Van Nistleroy but they still lost out to Barca for Ronaldhino. The transfer fees they can offer out strip Liverpools but even Cantona wasn't in the French national side and had to make his name at utd. Maybe it will change now they are owned by the yanks, but I think this is indicative of the Prem league in general the world player of the year tends to be based in Italy or Spain normally, I'm not sure why, maybe they just don't fancy the challenge of the premiership. Only Chelsea can sign a schvchenko by offering silly money, but in fairness he's been ****.
I still come back to what you define as 'big' its a topic that will be debated for years to come no doubt there should be some equation worked out by a clever student of mathematics at cambridge ie...Domestic league titles x European Cups + Uefa Cups % number of European cups won by clubs from that country % annual turnover ranking x stadium capacity + world wide shirt sales ...
Something daft like that - would sort these arguments out once and for all!
