Bought a MOC from US, figure was $70, postage $32.92 and import charges $31.58. Took over 2 weeks to arrive via Yodel. According to my wife the delivery guy just drop it at the door and drove off. When I got the package and opened it up, there was a message from eBay saying sorry we have to open the parcel and repack it for security reason. Luckily there was no damage to the MOC. Just want to warn anyone using this stupid ridiculous system, unfortunately this is the LAST time I will be using it!! I would suggest all US sellers boycott this service!!!

This is the reason I stay clear of any US auctions that are signed up to this Global Shipping Programme. I would rather risk it and pay the import fee's this end. Didn't somebody on here have a vintage MOC Ben Kenobi folded in half and stuffed in a jiffy sent through this service??

I think a lot of US sellers are regretting signing up to this service.

The service is a joke - and daftly eBay apparently set it up to persuade Americans to make their autions available to international buyers

In terms of Yodel - we had a similar experience with them last week - package just left on the door step in full view of the street - card posted through the door saying it had been left in a 'secure porch' - not impressed

why do some ebay.com auctions state international rate $$$$ and no import charge....and some with international and import charge?

The one's who show import charges have signed up to this Global Shopping Programme. Basically, the seller in the US sends it to a central warehouse where they open it for security reasons, squeeze it back into packaging way too small for the size of the item by folding or opening items, then send it onto you with the suppossed import fee's that you would pay this end already dealt with.

What I don't understand is how can the US deal with our HMRC import charges?? Do they pass that money on to HMRC??

Just noticed this recently, got stung for $20 the other day. Didn't really read the fine print properly, it's a bit of a con in my opinion. I don't understand how they work out proposed "import charge" on an item that isn't liable for it. The item i bought was less than $80..? It's like double postage.

I wonder how much the US seller pays for this service. If it's not what the buyer pays its just a top up on the item cost i reckon :?

I'm just surprised people are still buying from sellers with the import tax charges attached, Seems a no brainer to me. I'd never pay it in a million years.

As far as I know the US seller just pays for domestic postage to sent it into the eBay/Pitney Bows warehouse - so it does work out cheaper for them (and less risk) - hence a lot have signed up

the UK import duties are not including in the GSP, it states that in their terms, but if you request an invoice from the US seller he has the option to opt out of the GSP, i just message the seller before i bid and everyone so far has agreed to opt out.

ebay auto opt them in, its a total scam to make money, paying ebay to ship your item for you at 3 x th cost.

"Import charges": this Programme Fee consists of charges associated with the customs service described above and is comprised of the following variable amounts: sales, goods and services, and value added taxes, duties, tariffs, excise taxes, and other amounts assessed or levied by any government authority in connection with the importation of goods into the applicable country of importation (but excluding income taxes) ("Commodity taxes"); third party brokerage fees (including advancement and disbursement charges and customs brokers handling and filing fees); penalties (but excluding any customs duties, taxes, surcharges, fines, penalties, or other charges which may be imposed on you by customs or tax officials after a GSP Item has successfully cleared customs and been delivered to, or made available for pickup at, the delivery address that you specify); classification charges associated with the assignment of a Harmonized System ("HS") classification code; charges for export compliance screening and verification and the assignment of an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN); and operational expenses associated with short-term loss recovery and the management of variances between the quoted Import charges and actual costs. Note: at eBay's discretion, applicable classification and export compliance charges, third party brokerage fees, and operational expenses may instead be included within the Shipping amount that is quoted to you.

I got stung by this system as well, bought a Marmit Stormtrooper with an extra £35.00 fee. 12 days later the parcel was left on my backdoor step, no note was put through the letterbox and as I don't use the backdoor much it was two days of wet weather before I noticed it. Luckily the item was ok, but I was furious. Never again.

I am interested in an item on us ebay but how How do you know whether or not a particular seller is included in this programme?

Does it say so on the listing?

The sellers that did not op out, you will know as the import charges is in the listing after the ridiculous shipping charges . The system knows you are in the UK because of your IP address. If you are really interested in the item I suggest you contact the seller to see if they can remove the GSP.

The more I have read about this, its a complete scam. Total money making racket...
I will be contacting sellers in future now I'm aware they can opt out of this. Its appearing on US ads at an alarming rate.

If they are not passing the monies onto HMRC but are stating that the charges cover import duties or VAT then they are in breach of UK law. HMRC take a very dim view of this and usually big fines or sentences follow.

Their wording is vague and I think the highlighted line is reference to any further penalties (eg wrong classifiaction of the imported item) fall on the buyer to pay which is a rubbish attitude to take.

I have asked Ebay customer services as to how they intend to get the right levels of duty and VAT as the current system does not get the right amounts.

I've got 2 items going through this system now and the other day I had noticed that it stated it was delivered and showed the guys name and time,it was still in the states when it should have been here in the uk,well my arse opened and contacted the seller and he told me they move it on from the central depot, Wtf? So is there not another tracking number for tracking to the uk afterwards???? This seems proper messed up :(
