Hey all, I'm only new here but wanted to share this with you all, I witnessed this item sell on ebay today and couldn't believe what I was seeing an Early bird kit with a double telescoping luke, AFA85 grading sold for $10,090 Australian. Is this some kind of record? To check it out follow this link. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180647573859&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT .Thanks and hello again.

How many more of these do you think will appear on ebay over the next couple of weeks after this price was reached?
I'm resigned to never owning one of these anyway but at the end of the day once one sells for stupid money that figure then becomes the "going rate" for that item....

Yeah your right, I know they aren't common but that's just ridiculous. I had the opportunity to snag one of these a few years ago for about $650 ( standard saber not AFA ), my wife even gave her blessing but I talked myself out of it. Duh!

I hate it when responsible money management comes before collecting. :D

Wow!! hefty price there! I would love an Early bird kit but like rich said there i aint ever gonna get one even if i have to pay that price no thank you. Rather hunt for bargains and hauls

Yes that's crazy. $1000 of that is for the DT Luke (kind of understandable) but the other $8000 is for the AFA sticker. CRAZY!!

I would like to get one of these sets one day, but will bw quite happy with a non DT ungraded one :)

One can only wonder the amount of Import Duty the buyer will need to pay if this item is sent overseas.

How many mail-away-brides come free with this, or is it delivered in a car which you then keep??

I love star wars and collecting but that is F**king disgusting!!
sometimes you can qualify excessive value on something if it works better or is some how more durable, or even rare. but come onnn

For that money you could hire actors to dress up as the early bird characters and act out scenes from the movie once a week in your front room for 6 months.

I hear you and I guess it's all relative. I couldn't dream of spending even 1k on a figure! But equally I can spend a couple of hundred now and again, where as I know to some people that sounds like madness too.

Some people just obviously have a huge disposable income, so 10k for a toy is like you or I buying an expensive piece to us. They probably also drive a 100k car and live in a 1m house.

It might be understandable if you ar MADLY in love with toys, but i could find far more enjoyable things to spend that amount of money on.

Like you say though, that to him could be £100 to us and acceptable.

Thats absolutely crazy money!!!! Theres one for sale here for £730 with the ST Saber.....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1977-EARLY-BIRD-KIT-AFA-Graded-w-Box-inserts-/200529075913?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb076dec9

So he's paid an extra £5750 for the DT Saber

I'd probably buy that one if it wasn't in that stupid AFA case, it looks ridiculous!

Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen a sealed Earlybird Mailer?

Pretty sure a sealed one got U graded by that villains!!! guy once. Remember there was some back and forth on RS about it.

I agree Edd. It just looks all wrong. I quite like what AFA do with the ESB Six Packs but this just looks shite! Far too much prespex IMO

I couldn't believe it when I saw what this auction ended at, as literally days before, I found one locally from the original owner. Mine wasn't in AFA85 type condition or had sealed baggies, but if this is a trend I'm glad I got one when I did. Right now, I feel this to have been a one time type thing, but we'll have to see what happens when the next one shows up for auction.

The only sealed ones I know of are mentioned in this old thread from a find in the 90's. I believe this is where most of the ones without an address label originate from. According to the story, they were all opened up though to check for DT Lukes.

I remember a U graded certificate done by Villains! but I'm not sure on any U grade mailers. The AFA population reports right now say there aren't any, but I doubt it is up to date.
