Addition: My piont, originally was meant to be tackling the myth that 'an offer made on a love auction is pretty much always a low-ball offer and is inherently deceitful'.

Which website is this?

many times i have offered a seller an amount for an item that was live… the seller didn't accept said offer but the auction ended for less than i offered and i didn't win the auction because i forgot to bid.
Perhaps you should have placed a bid instead of contacting the seller?

You wouldn't have to if you had just placed a bid initially. :?

PS - I don't work for e**y

If it's an item I'm really after then I will probably contact the seller to see if they are considering a BIN bid. This is not something I used to do but as I've seen a few items I've wanted to bid on disappear before the end date I'd rather check to see what the seller is thinking of doing.

It's a tricky situation with bidding on ebay as I've found over the years that people only tend to really bid on an item in the last few minutes of the auction and if you go in large at the start the price can just jump up straight away. It's great for the seller but not the buyer so I'd rather check first to see if the items is going to run it's coarse and then bid near the end. I know this can wind some people up but there's little to no point not doing this sometimes as it's only going to happen anyway (I know, I know, it's no excuse just because others are doing it but if you really want a certain item then you have to get involved in the whole game).

The offers that I have made to end an auction have always been more than fair in my opinion and are always based on my experiences with the current value of the item. I'm pretty sure I've always offered more than most would pay and when a seller decides to let the auction run I've always ended up with it for less. I don't really see any problem with this if the seller is happy to deal and generally there have never been any bids on the item (probably because everyones waiting to put their bids on at the last minute ). It's the sellers items and really they can decide what to do with them. That said though I have been on the other side with selling things myself and receiving lots of emails to end the auction. I can remember one time where I decided to sell before the auction was due to end as I had a really strong offer but I'm not sure I would take it now as it ended up being a whole lot of stress. Also I had so many people complaining that I'd ended the auction early I really don't think it was worth it for me. The end of the day I feel if you want to sell something on ebay then it's better to run it as a BIN or auction and just stick to your guns, it seems the fairest way to go and you'll upset a lot less people.

As for putting in an offer once an item has been sold, well that's just bang out of order. It's your tough luck for not bidding on it and really it should be a legal requirement to sell it at the price it ended up going for (which I thought it was?).

Obviously the alternative is bidding. That goes without saying.

I don't bid early in items, most here don't. It leaves you open to shill bidding and will often result in you paying a higher price because of it.
And as I said I often forget when an item is ending or am busy.
