Right, now I thought I had this one cracked - mark as a gift with a value of less than £40.00 right ?

So why have I been charged £11.17 for VAT (+ the obligatory £8.00 handling charge) when my package is marked as a gift with a value of $40 ?

It actually says on the sticker "goods imported from one private person to another private person as a gift with a value over £40, are subject to Customs charges"

My only thoughts are that they include the postage costs - I had a dispute with Fedex before and that is what they claimed - surely this can not be true ?

like i said last time the woman at parcel force told me they are tighten up on these charges and very few are getting through with out getting taxed now because the government want to stop us importing stuff to try and keep the money in the country or the EU and yes the shipping cost gets included in the overall value i got stung at christmas on a low value item its ****

Postal costs were $46 so I presume they are charging VAT on the combined total ($86) which is £54.00

Seems the only logical explanation

I had a Fedex package arrive at the back end of last year - again marked as a gift with a value of $35. They delivered it and then sent me an invoice for £26 for customs charges. When I called them up they told me that the postage was vat-able - I told them that was a load of rubbish and that I wouldn't pay it - they send me a couple of reminders and a solicitors letter but haven't sent anything for a while so I presume that they can't be bothered to chase £26

However with this one today then maybe this is the case and they can tax you for postage as part of the 'value'

the problem is with parcel force they dont deliver it untill you pay the charges and if you dont pay they send it back after so long

I feel for you Iain, but that is exactly what they are doing, you get charged on postage costs & actual value combined which is a right bloody farce, so you are left with but a few options which are as follows (IME)

1. - mark the parcel as low value & send via cheapest option, as the express or priority option will instantly tip the scales in there favour.

1A. - Always remember to send the seller 2 payments 1. to the marked low value 2. the remainder, as they WILL ask for proof of payment!

2. Send it with the following criteria -

2A - vintage action figures
2B - In original packaging
2C - Over 30 years old
2D - commodity code clearly marked on the label & preferably on the box
2E - don't forget rule - 1A!

As I have checked & double checked with HMRC about this & its water tight!

They can still argue the fact but if these steps are taken they WILL LOOSE if you take them to court & "should" honour there own rules & ad-hear to them, not that they will, as I just got a parcel through with all the above bar 1A - muppet! so I can now not make that claim!, the parcel I had sent had the commodity code clearly marked on 3 sided in LARGE red font & on the label & they still bloody charged me, BUT! if I had followed 1A I could have easily claimed the excess taxes back.

This 2nd method will entightle you to the vintage toys import tax which is 5% not the usual 20%, you will still have to pay the Parcel force handling fees though which are -

£8 for standard post or (wait for it)
£13.50 if sent via express or priority - total wank bags! what a farce charging more for priority services

See my other thread on this for the correct commodity code guys ;)

How on earth can they justify postage costs as part of the value

It's bad enough that Ebay get to take 10% of the postage costs when you sell items but now they are also a taxable commodity ! Crazy

Well bugger me with a barge pole

A package arrived this morning, with a postage cost of $55 and marked as a gift with a value of $35 - so around the $80 mark - did I get any charges - did I heck !

I'm not complaining but where is the consistency - how can we beat the system if the system doesn't even know what it is doing

Talk like that gets Weasle excited. You know that Iain. Please refrain from insinuating any buggery with any barge poles and the situation should return to normal shortly.

No they do not make sense. I ordered a Lego Death Star from America last year. £140.00 free postage, was fully expecting to get clobbered by customs, but nothing!! Yet I'm a postie and only this morning a customs charge comes in for £11.90 on a guys packet which states 'Lego Pieces' on description of contents with a value of $35.00. ????? I think Customs make it up as they go along. Prob got quota's to reach each month, start of the month your screwed coz they clobber every single packet, end of the month they've reached the target so let loads go through!!!

Its just like customs at the air port when you go on holiday guys, they just flag certain parcels by (I imagine) picking them out at random, or so it would appear, just be thankful for small mercies.

I have 3 in the post at the mo, so I am crapping myself TBH
