Customs Charges

Forget that. Spoke to the thieving bastards.
It's 20% on the cost of the item, the insurance and the postage costs. So that was £35 on a £102 purchase.
Surprised they don't find out the value of the packaging and hit you for that too.

ive had 3 parcels slip through with no charges whatsoever??

i always take the risk with low value, even if one package went missing its still cheaper over a year that getting charged £30-£40 a time going to the bloody deadbeat benefits freaks

Yeah i know but some guys won't mark the package down.
Like you say losing a £100 package once every 20-30 purchases is better than paying £30-£40 every time which would set you back about £1000 on 30 purchases.

I am still yet to really understand why they only charge some people/packages and not others?

I swear in the years before I moved away I never once got charged on a package coming from the states, marked low value or not.

I am going to see what happens when I go back to England in June as I have a rather large package coming from Shawn- Fingers crossed..

Could you imagine if they started charging taxes on parcels from the same country..... that would then make collecting ****.

OOOOHHHHH EEERRR DUCKY!

Big shift in policy in the 6 years (or so) I've not been collecting. Up to 2005 not a single eBay order from the states was held back.

I've had 3 this year that have been clobbered by Gideon (arsehole).

What pisses me off is the sanctimonious yanks who refuse to mark the package as $1 and a gift - "it will go against Federal law". Morons.

I just got a custom charge because the idiots calculated it from the shipping cost rather than the value! And to completely show their incompetence, it says 'please see overleaf for disputes' and the other side of the paper is blank

Does anybody know the number to call?

Edd, I might be wrong but I think postage is normally added on to the total, so that's what you get charged on. I'm assuming your parcel is being held at the depot?
Best bet is probably to pick it up and pay, then try to get it back. They won't release till its been paid and can send it back after a few weeks.
When you collect it, they give you a form with phone numbers on.
It's a pain in the arse, but it's probably better to pay and try to claim back than get your item sent back to where it came from.
Good luck.

Yes I've already picked it up and paid mate. I only noticed afterwards, but the wrong total was put in the 'total value' box on the form - the item value is listed at $30, then the shipping at $55, and then it has $55 in the total box!

So it looks like the seller screwed up the form, but even so surely customs should have noticed that? Do you think it's worth claiming? I wouldn't have minded the £7 VAT, it's the ****ing £8 handling charge that pisses me off

Don't say a word Edd or they will add the $30 to the charge & you will end up paying more, go back to page one on here & ready the charges break down I posted - you get taxed on both item value & the shipping costs, so you got off lightly m8

How on Earth can they justify taxing you on the shipping cost? That's ridiculous!

I had the same issue but I am afraid it's true - I called up and asked and they confirmed that postage costs are included

They'll only add the shipping costs to the total when the item price is above the taxation limit so I think you're safe to appeal the charge Edd.
