In reference to a recent post, I thought it might be a good idea to get some numbers in terms of support / lack of support for UGrading

**** a 4th option. You either support or you don't. Can't have your cake and eat it.

I support the 4th option if the bubble is open over 50%...completely smashed....cracked from top to bottom or the cardback is tore in half or a cut-card figure.....but even then..I would not use AFA for anything :D

Well theres 250 million +++ loose star wars figures out there and people still cant find a C10/90. Either they are super lazy or they get off having someone else teling them how good there figure is with a sticker.

I know how good a loose figure is. Because I collect them. No need for some stranger to charge me massive amounts of money for my 'good in school gold star'.

Woops!

God dam it!

No more Ugrade talk.

Naughty naughty :P

It's Ok Grant...you did not start this discussion and the person who brought up "U' grades (One of the bigger sellers of them) is the one strirring the tird. As for that person...here is a bit of advice... If you do not want to get stung...try not to stick your hand directly into the Hornets nest.

My dirty tuppence worth...

As a newbie collector, trying to find decent loose complete figs to finish and improve my much loved childhood collection, it staggers me that a U graded figure is in any way 'worth' more than one with an identical grade - or indeed not encased in acrylic at all. One day I might pick up the odd moc or two and as a tightarse on a budget, I'd rather have an honest item, for better or worse, in the condition it has survived in.
Grading for the protection of rare items is one thing, ripping open beater cards (denying those like me who would cherish them) just to scam a quick buck is disgusting.

We all love our old SW gear here, I think the subject of Ugrades is so touchy because we're keen to defend our hobby from all that is detrimental to a finite commidity.

And you can't play with a hard plastic box!

A very informative thread.

Thanks for the kind words. You're a gem.

Mmm.... The sweet taste of enlightenment.

That's right Grant. You guys rock, and you sure are the knowledge on vintage Star Wars. Keep up the good work.

I was over at the Arsenal today. They had huge big anti u grade banners up! lol

On a serious note, I don't do much u grading these days anyway. Apart from a huge trade I done with a collector recently (which involved droids, ewoks, potf with coins cased up with them, and quite a few u85 to bulk up the loose u set I have for sale), I tend to prefer buying quality loose mint figures for grading.

Not sure option 4 is a good idea.

I have seen some real real beaters, barely even C1, busted bubble, half a card missing, front torn off, coloured in by some kid with his crayon etc, and in that circumstance I can see logic in having it graded. The card is basically ruined and gone, the bubble is held together by fairy dust and no matter how carefully it's looked after the figure is gonna be loose soon anyway. Ok maybe some people don't agree with paying to encase a loose figure, each to their own. But, in the case where a figure will be loose in the not too distant future i understand u/loose grading. Saying that I have seen a lot, far too many, cards after the figure has been U graded (i'm thinking of Ruilar on RS, in this case) where the card looks fine and I know plenty of collectors who would happily have had the formerly MOC in their collection. True, I don't know what the bubble was like on those cards, but they don't look to have been badly treated, so I don't think it's unreasonable to assume a good few were solid enough MOC's.

I guess I'm trying to say that in rare circumstances I can see why people get figures loose/u graded, but all too often I fear it's MOC's that other collectors wold be happy to have.

Saying that we've been here before. Robbie knows how most people on here feel, and we know how Robbie feels. No amount of discussion is going to change either sides opinion. But to let the thread run, please keep it civil.

I very much agree. I think option 4 makes the whole argument null and void. We are talking about Ugrading. And we all know full well what that means. No need to write loop holes into the argument. In extreme circumstances almost anything is justifiable so it really is a redundant and unnecessary addition to the argument.

I agree to but as Frank asked for it then I thought it should go up.

In all honesty, I would love the other two people that have selected YES to give their views in this thread. There is no obligation to but it would be interesting to hear why they agree with it. However, with it being such a sensitive subject, I respect the fact that they may not wish to do this
