Best figures for a focus?

As a focus collector before and something I'd like to do again in future, it got me thinking about good figures to collect and why.

For example, you'd have to be nuts to do a Boba Fett focus. Even common MOC's and loose figures are expensive, and he's riduculously popular so any unique pieces will be long since hoarded.

Then of course you have figures like Madine, where every MOC and loose variation would cost you under £20, apart from the 5k a tri logo costs.

Finally you have figures like Amanaman that were only available on 2 cardbacks. you'd run out of interesting things to collect pretty quickly!

So, I think it should be a figure that's been sold worldwide so you could ge tthings like square Meccano cards and Popy boxes,, available since at least ESB so you have plenty of cardbacks to collect, ideally a few figure and card photo variations, and of course you don't want any (or many) "holy grail" pieces in there.

I'm going to stick my neck out and go for Obi Wan. Several figure sculpts, cardback photos, and dozens (hundreds?) of cardbacks. I also think Spoon's Han Hoth focus was a wise choice. My Luke Bespin one wasn't a great idea, as any Palitoy's or foreign MOC cost a fortune. However the amount of hair colour, boot etc variations gave me a lot to hunt.

what do you think?

Youve made some good points there Edd and I think coming to a decision about a figure focus is a difficult one. For me it would have to be a figure that I really loved. If Im honest I couldnt be bothered with collecting Madine as he is IMO a pretty average figure.

Ive always liked the thought of a Greedo focus myself. Great figure and some different cardbacks out there. Not too much to get disheartened though.

Chris.

Ben is a good one Edd - any character with SW, ESB and ROTJ cards has to be good. I always liked your Bespin Luke focus, but he is popular. How about an ESB Lando focus - a key character on a lot of cards but not too popular. The ROTJ characters do limit the cardbacks available

I've always been tempted by a Lobot run, and Jason's 21B is another good one

You could go for a theme or line run, maybe all the hoth or bespin characters or maybe a cheeky 96 Kenner MOC run on their movie card (debut if you are feeling brave). I think the latter is always nice as its not ultimately expensive as you have latitude on what card you get e.g. You would go for an ESB Fett rather than a 21 back Fett and a 32 back Bossk rather than a 31 back Bossk. Also its wont get boring as its many different characters and will certainly keep you busy!

How about a bounty hunter focus and do the debut card from each line?

I wanted to do that and ended up with a run of proofs instead.

I was going to do a Han Solo focus but when i thought of needing a Palitoy Large head Han, that put me off going ahead with this.
I do think a character that appears on the Star Wars card does give you a lot more to collect but can be expensive.

I started a Jawa focus a few years back and one reason was because of the possibilty with cardbacks, SW, ESB, Jedi and then the foreign variants aswell.

I also liked the idea of Greedo, but if I was gonna do it now, I think it would be a Stormtrooper because of the huge array of Foreign carded and the variants on loose including a real mixture of bootlegs.

I did start a B-Wing Pilot focus but someone on RS has one and has really rounded up the market for any kind of pre production stuff which would be a nice addition as the run on them is really short.

I'd say go for a character that was available on what i consider to be the five main cardbacks, SW, ESB, ROTJ, Trilogo and POTF, and anything else after that is just a bonus.

that's a tough focus, especially if it's a jawa or Fett
