2014 Fifa World Cup Thread

Germany's chances for the final have just increased; Neymar's back injury has ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.

Serves brazil right for kicking seventeen shades of **** out of Rodriguez. They started and got away with it all night, this looks like being their comeuppance.
Gotta love Karma.

Still they have, Fred, Hulk and Jo, they dont need to worry!

Certainly not the Brazil of old. Stop the other team playing by clattering them whenever they get the ball. They weren't good to watch.
Out of the teams that are left I don't want Holland to win because of Robben's diving, Brazil because of this game, Germany and Argentina, well, just because, and Costa Rica don't have a **** show. So go Belgium! Plus my mrs has them in the sweep at work so could get a few quid out of it! :D

I actually think Hulk has played quite well in most of the games. He wrongly had a goal disallowed, works his socks off, and has been a bit unlucky. As for Fred, i'd rather have Wilma or Pebbles in the team than him. Offers absolutely nothing.

I agree, i'm surprised at all the Hulk bashing. He was poor in one game and improved greatly in there next (Chile game). He needs to make better decisions re his final ball but generally has been one of their better players. Fred, on the other hand, is the worst international level footballer i have ever seen. It's incredible. He basically is exactly the same level as if you took any guy out of the nearest pub, put a shirt on him, stuck him up front and said 'right, you [lay for Brazil now…go!'. It's incredible. Never seen anything like in in my life.

Also, regarding all the Brazil fouling their way to a win talk; Colombia were every bit as bad. It was ****ing ridiculous. At least 6 times in the first half i thought the ref should have booked a Colombia player for dirty cynical fouls. He let way to much go early on and it ruined the game. Brazil, i agree, were at it too. Neither team came out of it looking good but the best team did win. Brazil dominated about 75 of the 90 minutes.

Without Neymar, tho, they are in big trouble. He was about 75% of their team. They still have a decent, not amazing, defence and one or 2 players who can make stuff happen but nothing stand out. It's gonna be very difficult for them to go any further.
You can get Argentina at 4/1 to win the tournament (given they haven't got through their QF yet) and i think those are pretty good odds. They're even money for me with Germany and Holland.

It's a shame really. On one hand, i'm glad Brazil got through because I think the tornament is a better place with them in it, but the qf's have been more about not losing, than winning.
If Columbia played the way they can, they would have blown Brazil away last night. Like wise with France.
Here hoping the other 4 will turn it on tonight.

Agree Brazil were the better team on the night, but the whole game was ruined by the fouling. IMO Brazil were worse or at the risk of sounding childish, they started it.
A decent ref would have clamped down on it early on.

Disagree totally on Hulk, he's a poor man's Emile Heskey.

As for the Argies/Belgium game, best team won, but another underwhelming 90 mins. Belgium just never got going. Same as France.

The number of times they were caught off side was unreal. It's not a new rule and it's not hard to look along the line yet half the time the ball went forward one of their boys was stood off side.
They also need to have a quiet word with Hazard and tell him that just being on the pitch isn't enough he has to actually do ****, like ooohhh move, or hell even run! Hate to agree with the wanker but Mourinho may have been right about him.

Ohh and Marc Wilmotts, hoofing long balls up toward Fellaini is a really pish tactic. You'd think after Utd tried it so successfully last season that he'd have figured it out before a WC quarter final.

Shame, i'd like to see Belgium do well, but they didn't turn up today.

Yeah, the Belgians did about as well as i thought they'd do this tournament. Definitely didn't see them going any further than QFs before or at any point during the world cup. They're very overrated because they suddenly have players people have heard of which automatically leads people to the conclusion that they're brilliant. Hazard and Kompany are their only real top quality players and Hazard was bloody awful all tournament. Fellani just jumps up and down like a clown on a pogo stick and other than that there's not a lot to their midfield. Lukaku is decent on his day but wasn't fit so they didn't get the best of him.
Not sure what to make of Holland. In many ways they were unlucky not to beat Costa Rica in normal time. Their keeper was having a blinder. There's a lot of talent in that side and on their day you can see them beating anyone but the same goes for Argentina, and they have Messi so i'd have to edge them.
The other semi-final is tough to call to. It's definitely not gonna be easy for Germany but without Neymar and Silva and WITH Fred, you gotta say it's gonna be really tough for Brazil.

Agreed, Dutch probably just about deserved to win. Wasnt massively impressed with them though.

You'd fancy Germany to beat Brazil given Neymar is bucked. The other semi could go either way.

Bizarre subbing your keeper for penalties, especially given Krull had saved 2 of 20 for Newcastle. Seemed to work, or at least it didn't bite them in the arse.

I personally found all four quarter finals a bit on the disappointing side, fed up with pundits saying it's the best World Cup ever, just can't agree. I don't think any of the four semi finalists have played particularly outstanding during tournament, just hope the final will be a worthy showpiece

Yeah, it's reeaaaallllly not. The group stages were good. Most of the last 16 games were ****, and i mean really ****!, bar Belgium v USA and, like you say, the QFs weren't much better. We've not seen any free-flowing quick passing football from ANY of the big teams: Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Holland etc and all 4 at times have been dire.
It's been a better world cup than the last which was arguably the worst ever.
It's the equivalent to being really hungry, eating a cracker and going; 'that's the best food i've ever had!'

Yeah I agree with the comments on here

Huge respect for the Costa Ricans tho. They were a breath of fresh air! Very unlucky. They can be very proud 8)

Dutch were tactically for most of the game on plan...but it didn't make for good watching :?

They nearly came undone a couple of times

Sneiders strikes were superb, RVP was well off, Robben again put a shift in.

Agreed a country mile better than last WC, sadly most teams in the latter stages will look at tactics and a result as opposed to free flowing entertaining football, but there have been some exhilarating matches and excitement scattered through the tournament

 substituting the GK just for pens....that was a gutsy decision could have gone the wrong way...but a one off moment though

We're definitely missing a high scoring game in the knock out stages. Normally you get one or two games were both sides go for it and it ends up 4-3.

Ps, Pete the worst WC i can remember is Italia '90. It was so exciting they had to introduce the back pass rule afterwards.

To reiterate my early morning rant. The amount of cheating has been unbearable for me. Robben was praised for not diving, yet he still dove or went down too easily a number of times during the game and even completing the typical 3 or 4 extra rolls while holding an uninjured knee.

The Costa Rican goal keeper has been praised for his saving, but should be slated for how many times he's been on the deck rolling around in the last two games, only to carry on minutes later 100% fit.

I also thought Krul was out of order approaching the penalty takers. Keepers should be forced to keep any antics or goading be done from the goal line. I'd have headbutted the twat in the chest and then rolled the ball into the net.

The sportmanship in football is getting lower and lower if possible. Not sure what match it was, but Danny Murphy said "Good foul" during the commentary as a player breaking away was hacked down.

"Good foul"

25 minutes gone... can it get any worse for Brazil?
Despite my concerns/observations of their up and down nature this tournament, I literally can't believe my eyes!!!

It's mental. Could be the biggest whipping in World Cup history.
