Ok, a nice wee totally festive pole, as the title says what are your personal top five Sci Films.

I'll assume we would all have some or possibly all of the OT in there, so lets exclude them, and it's 'Sci Fi' rather than 'fantasy' so no LOTR's etc. Pete, don't even think about "Care bears the movie!"

In no particular order mine would be;

1 - Dune (the original, not a patch on the book, but still fantastic)
2 - Krull (not a great film but I remember watching it hundreds of times as kid so it has great sentimental value)
3 - The Matrix (one of very few films where I've come out of the cinema and gone "Wow")
4 - Aliens (more blood and guts than the original, and at 3 months old I was a bit young for the original)
5 - The last star fighter (ditto my comments for number 2)

There are a few others I could probably have put in there but I thought those three for sheer watch-ability (is that a word?). Over to you lot.

1. 12 Monkeys (probably Brad Pitt's best film)
2. Alien 3 (don't ask why but I love this film so much)
3. The Matrix (remember watching it for the first time when I was 16 and being blown away)
4. Terminator 2 (just better than the original)
5. Donnie Darko (one of my all time favourites)

Nearly put Inception in there but didn't think it deserved a spot just yet

Weasel would you call Star Wars SF or Fantasy? :?

Apart from those my all time favourites are:

1. Blade Runner
2. Alien
3. Highlander
4. Mad Max
5. Tron

Recent favourites:

- Moon
- Sunrise
- District 9
- Children of men
- V for Vendetta

!. The Star Wars Trilogy (I can't really separate these and if i do they'll be 3 of the top 5)
2. Alien (pretty much the greatest Sci-fi/Horror movie of all time and a top 10 movie of all time for me)
3. Blade Runner (breathtaking)
4. Terminator II (1 is amazing too but if i can't put them together, then II just takes it)
5. The Matrix (i guess a few films could have gone here but this being the 5th makes each spot one of the most ground breaking and relevant movies of all time sci-fi or regular!)

With all the SW originals as separate slots, ditto for Alien and Aliens and Terminator 1 and 2 that bumps my list up to a top 9 anyway. Anyon leaving out any of those films needs their ****ing head examined or, as would make more sense, they havn't seen one of them, in which case... they would need their head examined. :D

There are too many other sci-fi films i love to make a massive list but many of the 80's that i love mainly for nostagic reason - Flight of the Navigator, E.T., D.A.R.Y.L, WarGames, Short Circuit, Flash Gordon (oh dear ) and many others. There was a film about a guy who played a video game and got abducted to another universe to fight in the "real" universe that the game was based on... i think it was called The Last Startfighter or something. That is awesome. Saw it again recently and loved it (often not the way with childhood films  )

Superman, Ghostbusters ?? Are they Sci-fi?? Hmmm, i'd say Robots or spaceships compulsory in this list. lol

EDIT: I just seen Weasel mentioned The Last Star Fighter in his list... that's deffo the one i mean, just check on imdb... awesome movie. Nice one weasel! :D

1 alien remember watching this at my parents caravan when i was young and almost crying i was so scared
2 flash gordon seen this at the pics on holiday at butlins... " Gordons alive !!! "
3 the last starfighter dad bought this from a flea market on vhs , me and my bro wore the tape out it was watched so many times
4 terminator 2 when bad to the bone plays as Arnie spins off on his stolen harley....class
5 ice pirates / the thing , when the guys head turns into a spider " you gotta be ****in kidding me "

Andy

Yeah, you guys have prety much covered the few others that were close to making my list.
Both Terminators, Flight of the Navigator, Bladerunner, Flash Gordon etc.

Gotta say I'm not a huge fan of Donie Darko, great film, but it would be better if it actually made ANY sense!
12 Monkeys is good as well, but for some reason I just don't put it in the 'great/top 10' category.
As for Inception..............utter utter shite! Hyped up beyond all reason. Plot makes no sense, and it's not cos it's too complicated it cos it's bollocks! It's like the second and third Matrix films, great potential but they blew the budget on special effects and wrote the script whilst high.

Emiel, I'd say SW is Sci Fi. Lots of space ships and robots makes it Sci Fi in my book.
Dragons and magic = Fantasy. Robots, space ships and lasers = Sci Fi. Roughly.
Oh and good call on District 9. I just got the impression it ended with a sequel in mind, which took away from it slightly.

Spot on about the flight of the Navigator ship Josh. I have the DVD. I made the missus watch it about a year ago. She wasn't impressed!

Haven't seen the blackhole, guess I'll have to track that down over Xmas.

1. Terminator 2
2. The matrix
3. Aliens
4. Time bandits (can't believe knowone has mentioned it yet)
5. Futurams 'benders big score' (I know it's a new film but I really do love futurama and any of the futurama films deserves a slot ,just for keeping sic-fI alive in the funniest possible way)

Still haven't seen Moon yet. But have heard it is excellent.

Moon is a great film but it was nothing like I expected it to be! I remember reading about this film a lot prior to its release and I heard great things about its director, such as, "amazing for his first film" and "a great new British director surfaces again" and then I read who his dad was................. David Bowie!!!

Made me sort of think, would he have had any chance if he didn't have his dad behind him?! Like Kelly ****ing Osborne!

PS. Inception is GREAT - do you need me to explain it to you Wease?!

Yes please!

The logic behind the plot I get, but in the actual film it just makes no sense. It's all thrown at you that quickly that there's no way you can understand it or make hide nor tail of it. Even afterwards looking back on it, the plot makes no sense. What they say it's meant to be and what it actually is are totally totally different.
Kinda like Matrix 2+3 are supposedly expansions on the Matrix 'philosophy' but in actual fact they are just garbage!

I know what you mean! It took me a few watches to get it! I know a lot of people that hated it and to be honest i've only talked with a few people that liked it!

I am a huge fan of Di Caprio so I think I might be biased!

It's so like the Matrix films. Well, the second two. Great idea, potentially a great film, but it just makes no sense!
