What's your favourite ever war film?

I'm seriously struggling to think of a favourite. Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now (not the Redux bastardisation), A bridge too Far, Bridge on the River Kwai, Battle of Britain, Zulu etc etc

If only ..............Saving Private Ryan didn't get so Holywood after the first 30-45 mins,
...............Meryll Streep wasn't in The Deer Hunter,

and does Band of brothers count as a film!?

I'm currently watching The Pacific, really good too!

Another good one is 'Letters from Iwo Jima'. Quite a few manly tears flowing when watching this.

I like so many....Where Eagles Dare, The Great Escape, A Bridge Too Far, The Longest day, Kelly's Heroes, Full Metal Jacket, Black Hawk Down, The Patriot....i could go on and on :D but i really struggle to pick an overall favourite.

I think i'll have to go with A Bridge Too Far for the sentimental reasons :)

I really liked Band of Brothers, but i really didn't like Pacific for some reason....

I watched 'The Pacific' a few weeks ago. It's pretty good, but it's just not the same league as 'Band of Brothers'.

I haven't seen 'Letters from Iwo Jima', by the sounds of it not really one I'll be rushing to watch. Kinda Like 'Schindlers list', superb film, but just too depressing for me to get even half way through.

I'm not that much of a fan of war films but I have to say that Platoon is one of my all time favourites

Made the wife watch Born on the fourth of July the other week and she hated it! I still think it is a good film and better than both Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket (it seems to just lose any sort of momentum as soon as they leafe boot camp)

Escape to Victory!

:D

Jason

1. Platoon
2. Full Metal Jacket
3. Apocalypse Now
4. Saving Private Ryan
5. Hamburger Hill
6. Glory

Films based around war but not just "war films"

1. Shindler's List
2. Deer Hunter
3. Bridge On The River Kwai
4. Born On The Fourth of July
5. The Great Escape
6. The Pianist

Favourite war film, i like lots of them for different reasons. Cross of Iron is still one of the best, Battle of Britain still holds it own and for pure entertainment you can'y beat Kelly's Heroes :D
On another note Escape to Victory, a few years ago we did a charity football match based on the film raising money for the Royal British Legion. This year the match is being re-run at Colchester FC's stadium in June, i can't make it this year but last time i played in goal for the germans.

5. Hamburger Hill

Surely that's a typo Pete!?
It's a TERRIBLE film!
The "plot" is pretty non existant, the acting is pish and there's no real character development or anything. Easily the worst Vietnam film I've seen!

I'd agree with Pete. I know it's not the best but tbh I think i'd rather watch Hamburger Hill than Apocalypse Now

lol. It's not the best film ever but i wouldn't say it was terrible or even bad. Great fun as a Vietnam film and based around a true story. I thought they capture the atmosphere of Nam really well. I saw it when i was young and have seen it 4 or 5 times since. Love it.
A very young Don Cheedle is in there somewhere.
You're the first person i've heard say they don't like it. It's largely regarded as a "vietnam" hidden gem.

Genuinely it is one of the poorest films I've seen.
Bar all Disney crap I watched as a kid or ANY "rom-com" etc

Maaawwwwhhhhhh can't decide

Platoon is quality as is Apocolypse Now.

Does Top Gun count I mean there is an odd air craft carrier in it and a few F-14's flyin about and also a few MIG's

I 'll let Weasel decide

Top Gun for me if it's allowed

Ehhh it's been a while since I saw Shawshank redemption mate, but ehhh where the **** is the WAR in it!?
PS Gang-banging in prison doesn't count as a war!

Lee, Yeah, we'll let Top Gun count as a war film.
