World Cup 2018 Thread

It's kinda irritated me as I was quite pro VAR before this match. Sure England being rugby tackled by Tunisia should've been picked up but most other significant events seemed to have been captured and correctly as well as swiftly acted upon. Tonight though was delay after delay and in a few cases not even correctly resolved.
I guess the ref is really at fault as much as VAR for not controlling both teams, both managers and then flapping under the pressure of the crowds, players and cameras
Sad really

100% correct.
I think generally VAR is good for the game, but it's all about how the ref uses it.
Tonights debacle was all down to the ref, he made a decision and then was full of self doubt and went with the crowd.
That's not VARs fault?

Of course, I guess my point is that without VAR being used at all it wouldn't have happened... the ref would've had to make the decision... right or wrong... could've been far worse though with such a weak and indecisive chap at the helm I guess! :?

Yeah, but did make it interesting viewing as a neutral.
Don't think that he will be getting the final to referee!

I agree that its a farce, but as I have no dog in this fight, I kinda enjoyed the drama.

I would have loved it if Portugal had got knocked out. :p

Hey, new here :) Just seen the World Cup section :p

I was enjoying it for a while -it did get pretty stupid though. Kind of didn't think that all the faffing with VAR actually added anything useful either :s

I thought Iran performed a lot better than anyone believed they would, fair play.

I guess this is the best place to pop this...

Managing England; The Impossible Job

Currently on BBC iPlayer, a great documentary, starting with Sir Alf Ramsey and ending with Southgate... the trials and tribulations of managing England and being managed by the media. Some great moments and some heartbreak, but most notable of all is the vicious and vindictive way the media have behaved and time again torn the players, managers and hopes apart.

I thought it was a decent watch and may fill an hour between games for some of you...

What the **** is going on... this game/ref/VAR is utterly ridiculous.
Don't think I've ever agreed with that utter cockwomble Lawrenson before but as he says... it's a farce

That was nuts. There's no ****ing way that was a penalty. The guy stood there for about five minutes watching the video. Edit: Got the penalties mixed up :p Meant the Iran penalty. Never seen anything like it. Bunch of play acting winging little twats.

That game was a complete shambles. VAR is needed but if anything so far it is just amplifying the incompetence of some referees

Group B: Iran to beat Portugal 1-0. A pipe dream you say... maybe but Portugal looked poor against Morocco and Iran's side is built on defence. Spain 0 - 0 Morocco. Spain only just squeezed past Iran so not inconceivable. Iran top the group and go into England's side of the draw if they qualify second.

Iran top the group?
Have you been necking bottles of vodka while stood out in the sun? NO CHANCE of them topping the group. I can't see them getting out of it. They haven't even looked like scoring so far. It only takes one lucky shot, but the odds on them winning that group are miniscule. Portugal are a one man team but they are still head and shoulders better than Iran.

Portugal and Spain scraped through. All that vodka nearly paid off.

Yeah that nearly came back to bite me on the ass.
I watched the Spain game, so only saw the last 5 mins of the Portugal one, from what i've heard they were the better side and deserved to win. I've seen Iran's penlaty and that is a ridiculous decision. How any ref can give that I'll never know. I have a degree of sympathy with the match ref though, as he didn't give it originally. Clealry then VAR got in touch with him and said "look at it again." Quite what they saw i have no idea. The original ref is then questioning his own decision and, sadly didn't have the guts to stick to his correct call.

Saying that was there not a similarly farcical pen given to the Aussies against Denmark? If you're jumping to head a ball and the ball deflects off the opposition players head you have a split second to react. It's pyhsically impossible to move your hand in that time, especially if you are in mid air at the time, and often nt looking at the ball or you have your eyes closed. Yes it's hand ball but, it's not intentional and assuming your hand isn't in a stupid position (ie blatantly trying to deny a goal scoring opportunity) then no way should that ever be given.

Saying that, my opinion of ronaldo is well known and him getting a slightly fortunate yellow and Portugal now having to play Uruguay did cheer me.

Ps, Spain were ****ing shite. I'm glad I didn't tip them to win it.

Ohh and full makes to Egypt for managing to lose to the worst international side
I have ever seen.

Ohhh look, it's half time and what are they doing, they're showing an interview with Gareth ****ing Southgate. Good more England chat. Brilliant. We definitely need that.

I was watching that, and thought of you...not the best of thoughts

If nothing else, maybe it will make you guys realise just how much they bleat on and on and on and on and on and on about Engerlund.

You don't have to tell me about it.

As I think I mentioned before...Argentina will walk this tournament.

Well that's disappointing, after the first couple of games it looked like there would be a few upsets and a more interesting knock out stage, but all the cunts have fluked through so far. No doubt Germany and Brazil will join them later. Feel really sorry for Nigeria and Iran who IMO were far more deserving of last 16 spots.

Yeah, would have been nice to see some "big" sides miss out on the second round. The Argies have been woefully bad. France havent looked like a team either. Spain and Portugal bot look rusty as hell.

Argentina France could be won by the team that is least **** on the day.
