World Cup 2018 Thread

It's great that there's such a buzz about the England team now. I know we haven't played anyone half decent yet but we are a threat.

As a slight aside I loved the segment BBC did at the end regarding the Belgium game in Italia 90. Brought a little lump to the throat.

Yes I loved that as well, the Belgium game was one of my first England World Cup memories and that volley from Platt still gets better every time you see it. :D Seeing the highlights of that game, it was a miracle it got to extra time.

It's been a professional World Cup from England so far, they have done what's expected. More importantly they are gaining experience for future tournaments, forget this World Cup, England categorically will not get close to winning it. But if this group of players stick together and some more good players come through in the next decade I can see them being competitive for 4 or 5 tournaments.

Looking at the standings now after everyone has plyed two games, who would have guessed correctly that:
Japan, Mexico and Russia topping their groups. :p
Argentina and Poland bottom of theirs! :(
So far an enjoyable World Cup and not one 0-0 so far!

Second half was ****ing dull though wasn't it, I understand why but its the world cup, go get as many goals as you can, specially as Lindo had a fivva on
9-0
Bastards :D

Whaat?! Forget this World Cup? No. Don't write them off yet :)

Don't right us off? Are you kidding me?! Before a ball was kicked did you give England a chance? Nothing has changed since then, apart from England beating Tunisia and Panama.

Columbia will probably knock us out in the next round. Theirs no point dreaming, it's going to end badly for England as it always does. :)

They won't. They aren't good enough. Some of the bigger/better sides will expose the weaknesses in their team.

On that note. You lot, English people, are doing what you ALWAYS do. Win 1 game, apparently very well (I missed the game) against a poor side and suddenly your team are world beaters. Nope. They aren't.
They are in the group of second favourites with Portugal, Belgium, Argentina (who are as good as out), Uruguay etc. A decent run and a bit of luck and you could make the semi's. If you're very very lucky the final. But none of them will win it. Spain, France, Brazil or Germany (jammy jammy jammy bastards) will win it.
I heard a sports presenter on the radio this morning say, and I quote "Belgium aren't even that good, England should beat them fairly comfortably. I mean there's no one really in that Belgium team who would get in England's team!"
That's a verbatim quote.
Has he heard of Courtious? Hazard? There's a bloke called Kevin De Bruyne he's not bad, he might just get a game for England. Alderweireld? Dembele?

Then of course when you get knocked out suddenly the whole team will have let the country down, whoever missed the pen etc will be a bigger bastard than Hitler, they will be over paid show ponies who don't care etc etc etc. And those of us who aren't English will sigh, bang our heads off the wall and stick our fingers in our ears for 6 months.

Another rant. So far I've watched probably 60-70% of the games at the WC. In EVERY SINGLE ONE WITHOUT FAIL, they (BBC and ITV) have talked about England at HT and inside 5 mins of FT. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Once or twice I can understand. The day before or after an England game, yeah by all means, the day of an England game, yes certainly, even I would talk about England then. But EVERY SINGLE ****ING TIME!?
Do I really want to know how some England boy is settling in in Russia at HT of a game. NO, I want to hear some so called analysis about the ****ing game that's going on. My first thought at FT isn't "Gee, I wonder how Gareth Southgate felt after training today, I hope they do an interview with him." It's about the game I've just seen. I want to hear people talk about it, the implications, the performances, the incidents. Not ****ing Engerlund. There's a time a place and every ****ing given opportunity is neither.

THAT is why the rest of the UK and the ROI struggles to cheer for you lot in major competitions. The older I get the more it grates.
Don't even start me on the 5 mins we had to listen to about England during HT of the Norn Iron Wales game at the last Euros. First time either side has made a major tournament in 30 odd years and they both get out of the group and are playing each other. So needless to say the HT discussion should be about...........England!?

You must be watching the "English" BBC. Don't you have a localised BBC channel where they talk about potatoes or throwing logs around at half time instead? ;)

I saw a post on Facebook today telling England to calm down, all you've done is the world cup equivalent of beating Stevie Wonder at darts!

You need to get on Twitter Weasel and post @thebbc about this, I think it's funny all the pundits for the England games, Shearer, Lampard and Ferdinand!! Get some other opinions.

In all seriousness, is there not a localised NI BBC channel? I know there are for Scotland and Wales. I can't imagine they would bang on about England all the time on either of those. In England yes of course I'm most interested in England, but seems mad to ram it down the throats of non-English fans. In NI can't you get Irish channels instead?

I always give England a chance, and I never write them off. You've got to believe! No matter how **** they (usually) are. Showing support for ones team is not about how good or bad they are. It's about having a little patriotism. It's a bit like collecting, the nostalgia I have for those 80's World cups, watching Hoddle and co as a kid. It's stayed with me and I still get a buzz from watching. They're our team and I'll support them to the end!! Weas... calm down fella, it's only football.

Yes that's true, if you didn't back your team 90% of the fans at each world cup may as well not bother turning up.

There is BBC Norn Iron, but for big footy games they just go with the main Beeb pundits. If you've ever seen Irish league football (think of 22 drunk stevie wonder's trying to see who can boot the ball the highest) you'd understand why. I just wish they could show ONE game without discussing Engerlund. I get that England is the biggest part of the UK and their fans want to hear about the team etc, but EVERY SINGLE game gets more than a tad repetitive.

Bollucks! England broke my heart to many times when I was growing up and the final straw was the 2006 World Cup, I said after that England will never win a major tournament in my life time. Doesn't matter how patriotic you are, England aren't good enough. Know one wants England to win more than me and I really hope I'm proven wrong one day, but I doubt it very much. :)

Some of the funniest things I have read today, thanks.

PS: Weasel, your first part of the above post, before your rant about the wonderful BBC and ITV :? is so very true!
We win a game, all be it in reasonable style, against a team that's in the WC for the first time :!: and now we are champions of the World.
It's all I heard all day long.

What the **** is going on... this game/ref/VAR is utterly ridiculous.
Don't think I've ever agreed with that utter cockwomble Lawrenson before but as he says... it's a farce

More a case of VAR rather than a game of football.
But certainly livened that game up!

Group B: Iran to beat Portugal 1-0. A pipe dream you say... maybe but Portugal looked poor against Morocco and Iran's side is built on defence. Spain 0 - 0 Morocco. Spain only just squeezed past Iran so not inconceivable. Iran top the group and go into England's side of the draw if they qualify second.

Iran top the group?
Have you been necking bottles of vodka while stood out in the sun? NO CHANCE of them topping the group. I can't see them getting out of it. They haven't even looked like scoring so far. It only takes one lucky shot, but the odds on them winning that group are miniscule. Portugal are a one man team but they are still head and shoulders better than Iran.

Portugal and Spain scraped through. All that vodka nearly paid off.
