Why are Palitoy MOCs worth more?

I don't remember them as a kid as I didn't start buying figures until about 85. But I do remember Palitoys from collecting during the 90s, they were plentiful then, so for me that is the nostalgic attachment.

When I started collecting again I didn't give Palitoy much thought, a carded figure was a carded figure but when I displayed all my old cardbacks the whole Palitoy nostalgia kicked right in. Would love to concentrate on getting them but as others have said they are just too expensive just now.

Can all forum members with Palitoy moc's please look after them until prices have dropped then I'll buy them :D

I'm slowly beginning to realise I'm not going to be able to afford a Palitoy MOC first 20 run, ever... but I can but dream.

*Sigh* Can we get a board up & running for all the relative newbies like myself & Martin, for whom a Palitoy run will remain the stuff of fantasy? I feel like we need some sort of support group or coping mechanism.

When I was collecting Star Wars figures as a kid I did notice some had the Palitoy logo's on them and others didn't, but back then all kids wanted was the figure no one was interested if it was Palitoy or Kenner, what mattered was the figure itself.

Like Martin I was super miffed when the Palitoy logo disappeared from the cards and the little Briton in me was fuming when I picked up Kenner cards in my local toyshop circa 1983!

For me, it is all about nostalgia, holding a carded figure with that glorious red and blue logo just reminds me of the time I was stood in front of a rack of carded figures deciding which one I could get with my saved up pocket money.

Martin: as Gary has hinted at it isn't as hard as you think. I decided to embark on a run of Palitoy cards about September last year, and if you are willing to accept reseals/cracked bubbles/damaged cards then it can be done! They still look great and they still give you a buzz - well they give ME a buzz! I've got 12 of the first 20 Palitoy cards - not sure of the outlay but it is certainly under £1000, which spread out over a year and considering a lot of carded Palitoys go for that amount I don't think it's too bad!

 You've opened the floodgates here, Barry... and you thought you were asking a simple question :?: :D

You never know. That's the beauty of it.

I've had only one palitoy bargain, but have had some outrageous fortune.

It's what we clickity click that mouse for

Positive words, Grant- I thank you... :D

We had a good conversation about this a while back, Stevie- so I know we're definitely on the same page :D Absolutely no offence intended to our American brothers regarding the Kenner cards, it was just my point of view through the eyes of a child at the time (which I've brought with me into adulthood, I know... ), and like Stevie said: it's the nostalgia trip that takes you right back to those first toyshop visits.

Veering slightly off topic... I remember back in the late '70s we were on a long car journey from Yorkshire to London, and I begged my dad to take a detour half way down so that we could find the Palitoy factory (my obsession knew no bounds). Looking back, I think he was humouring me... as my vague address of 'Coalville, Leicestershire' as printed on the cardbacks clearly perplexed him. We drove around a few minor roads then stopped in a lay-by for a picnic (you did that kind of thing in the 70s), before continuing our journey. I'm glad I didn't find it, to be honest... the thought of all those toys contained therein could have been a little too much for a lad of such young years to comprehend.

Apologies for the 'story hour' narrative, I should've begun with: "Now, are we all sitting comfortably?" :?

Love that story Martin! No SatNavs back then so your dad would've had to rely on a trusty road atlas. He was a top fella even for just humouring you!

Great story Martin, and exactly the type of thing I would have done

Good going on your Palitoy collection so far Stevie :) ... and some of the reseals can display just as well as unopened

Ultimately if it's the logo that hits the nostalgia in you then anything from a card back onwards should be good enough to hit it.

Having nice reseals increases it I think as you get the figure displayed as well. Though not exactly cheap at times, a complete set of the first 20 and beyond into the 30 backs can be put together relatively easily. If you aren't fussy about original bubbles, then they are even easier. Repairing them and getting them to display well is all part of the fun.

Fully sealed is a nightmare as they all don't come that often and when they do, it's a nightmare in terms of price. However sealed figures hit a completely different collector's bug. For me it's the Palitoy logo and overall display that creates the nostalgia when I look at the collection, not the fact that the figure is sealed.

The sealed is more to do with having a challenge that I wished to complete, so I get from that a sense of satisfaction/achievement, but not really nostalgia.

I had further evidence of that this week when looking through Jason's (Mr_Palitoy) cardbacks. I got more nostalgia from them than I do from looking at a load of non Palitoy sealed figures. It would be worth contacting him to see what ones he has left. They'd need some repair and you'd have to find a bubble and foot plate but definitely a good starting point.
