Hi everyone,

I'm not exactly "new", as I am sure many of you know me from that "other" forum and/or Facebook. Been on forums for 15 years, and have been actively adding to my childhood collection since 1995. Started out as a hot shot rookie who got schooled by the big names in this hobby, and the last few years, as they have become a quieter presence, I have tried to pass on the things I have learned from them to new members. Although I rarely stray from RS due to the time I've been there and amount I've invested in being part of that community, I have become increasingly frustrated with an influx of modern collectors with little regard to our hobby. I've pretty much had enough of the ******** there, and have been very close to leaving the hobby. Todd recommended I give it a shot here (so blame him for bringing my opinionated ass here!), and I'm going to see if a fresh start can revive some of my enjoyment in a hobby I am very passionate about. I can already see the general anti-repro and anti-AFA vibe, so it looks like the right decision right away.

Welcome Ian, I'm sure most know you from RS so good to see you on here. I think most consider it more laid back here.
 
Ian, welcome. Sounds like RS's loss is going to be our gain. I've been on there a handful of times and from that experience I know where you're coming from.

And as for bringing your "opinionated ass" here? It'll be amongst good company (myself included). I wonder what a collective of opinionated asses is? A Parliament of Asses? A Bench of Asses? Oh no, wait; a Facebook group! ;)
 
Welcome Ian. We are laid back here and we have a low tolerance for people here that support repros and AFA...well that is after we set them on fire. :D
 
Welcome to all the new people. Ian the tone here is THE best of any forum. No heirs and graces or heavy moderation. This place basically polices itself without the need for *Big Brother* stepping up with condescending BS. 8)
 
Welcome Ian :D i told ya this is the place to come.

Best thing about this place is that the owner Edd doesnt make money from this or its members unlike a certain other forum we all know. Thats the real reason why everyone is walking away as most of the mods are yes men to the doughnut who runs it. Said owner is just a slimy, arogant little plonker who has no balls in the real world. And also, Edd doesnt claim rights to your images :lol:

Anyway, good to see you here bro :)

Welocome all new members and we don't all hate AFA, but I love strong opinions. The forum needs more in my opinion. :)
 
Hi all

I'm Chiff (nickname, been called it all my life), saw ESB when it came out when I was 6 and was obsessed from then on.

Have only just stumbled across the forum and am loving it. I was obsessed with completing my collection when i was a kid from my first figure (R2D2 on a 12 back) for 99p the day after seeing Empire.

I managed to keep collecting until the last 17 came out - remember going into Croppers Models in Bridlington (one of about 5 toy shops in the town at the time) and buying Lando General Pilot for 50p (despite the £1.49 sticker). I picked up whatever I could whenever I went in there and no longer played with them but I OPENED THEM ALL - What an idiot!

I couldn't track them all down so I wrote to Palitoy for a list of all the available figures and my Mum bought me 5 of them for Christmas. I of course, opened them all but did not play with them! This left me with about 3 figures left to collect and I stored my figures at home but didn't look into getting any more - although apparently me and my brother discussed buying loads of the new figures from Croppers and keeping them, we never did. My Mum wouldn't let me sell them - she insisted they would be worth money one day.

In 1991 we moved to Hull and an amazing vintage toy shop called Wonderland Toys opened up just down the road. It was fantastic. Being a student I had very little money but bought a snowspeeder which i'd never had and bought 2 out of the last 3 I needed (Imperial Gunner and Imperial Dignitary) for about £3 each loose. I couldn't get hold of Barada.

Went to Uni the following year and had to share a room - we shared a love of Star Wars and geeked out about figures etc. and the fact that I needed Barada to complete my collection. On my birthday 6 months later he was nowhere to be seen and I was so annoyed. He turned up at about 8pm, having chased around London all day (obviously in the days before the internet) with a Barada in his hand. Amazing. Needless to say he was best man at my wedding (Star Wars theme as me and the wife left the Church) and 23 years later we're still best of mates.

Just moved house and found them all again, including a large number of cardbacks (annoyingly a large number have the names cut out) - most are in pretty good nick and looking at this forum there's so much I want to start collecting. Do I need a vinyl cape Jawa and a blue Snaggletooth to "complete" my collection? Not sure I can afford them at present!

Thanks for letting me share - looking forward to starting collecting other items I didn't have when I was younger.

Oh, and you weren't an idiot for opening your figures. You enjoyed them, and that's worth more than any monetary value. :)

Welcome guys. Great post, Chiff. Well impressed with your mum's refusal to not let you sell your figures. Wish mine had stepped in when I sold mine. And as for your mate being your best man; you should have married him :lol:

Welcome Chiff, congratulations on joining SWFUK, you've taken your first step into a larger world!

In my opinion you don't have to collect a Blue Snag or VCJ to complete your collection. You were 2 when the VCJ was released.
There are some folk who think they'll never complete their collections because they are completists.

Collect what you want dude, what you care about, and most importantly what you can afford at the time.
There are a lot of folk out there flashing the cash and spending like fools possessed. Just have fun and enjoy it for what it is.
Joining this place is the wisest thing you've done thus far in the hobby though :D
 
Hi there my name is Gerry & i'm from the UK.I've been a fan of the franchise for years.I vaguely remember being taken to see ESB at the cinema but i do remember going to see ROTJ.
I was a collector of the vintage figures for many years & had a basket full of them for many years also.I fell away from the franchise & as a result gave my figures to my cousin.It's only since the announcement of TFA that i've shown an interest in the franchise again & wish i had held on to the my figure collection.

As a result of my interest again i'm now looking at collecting some of the vintage figures that i once had.This is 1 of the reasons i have joined up to this msg board as i'm a novice when it comes to the carded figures & this looks like the kind of place i could seek advice from.

Enough of me boring you here.
 
Welcome Gerry, good to see your rekindled interest.

If you're going for carded, you're going to want some tips before you get started, as there are a number of obstacles these days such as recarded and reproduction figures, geared mostly to inexperienced collectors who don't know the difference or don't understand how they hurt the hobby. :(
