The Wigan thread got me thinking about which teams belong in which leagues based on history, size etc. I didn't really follow football much from about 96 til 2008, but have got back in to it over the last few seasons. I was a massive footie fan as a kid, roughly 88-1995, and it amazes me how many teams that were big shots then have disappeared, and vice versa.

For example, the Premier League never looks right to me unless Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are in it. Both massive teams in the 80s/90s. Leeds - WTF happened to them!? And how about Oldham and Luton, again pretty big in the early 90s.

On the other hand, I really can't get used to teams like Stoke, Fulham, and Wigan being in the top flight. Give me Coventry, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough any day

You pretty much covered it. If you're judging who should be in based on size, history, and support then Forest, Leeds, and at least one Sheffield team should be in.

Wigan would be down in League one on that criteria (excluding their recent FA cup win).

Brentford :D .......... C'mon name me another club that has a pub on each corner of the ground, that is surely justification :)

hang on a minute - what about the best team in the world in the early 80's

the same team that has provided not one but two England managers, both of whom are arguably the best two managers England have ever had (one won the WC and the other got to the semi finals)

and if you want some 'Premiership' form then this team came three points away from a Champions League spot in their first season after promotion - ensuring that their manager won Manager of the Year

Edit, sorry was meant to be a wink and not an eye roll, fat-finger-itis

Pah - their greatest achievements are

1. Wining the 'Pie of the Year'
2. Winning the Milk Cup (yeah I don't know what that is)
3. Beating Bayen Munich

Liam, It is aye. BUT way back before you were a twinkle in yer da's eye, it was also the name for what is now the Carling.
