I don't normally sit down in front of the tele with my 3 year old but were all full of cold and vegging on the couch was the way to go this morning. She normally watches a bit of CBeebies but today we had Milkshake and CBeebies on live for a couple of hours. Maybe it's just me but the cartoons just don't cut it these days. C'mon is Paw Patrol, Treefu Tom and the Octonauts the best they can offer? Give me Bananaman and The Hair Bear Bunch any day of the week.

Do you think it's just because we're old that the new cartoons don't appeal; is it nostalgia - harping back to the good old days; is it that there's just so much out there today and there's not the same level of marketing channeled into one brand like M.A.S.K., HE-Man and a Transformers; or is it that modern cartoons have to deliver a curriculum whereas old cartoons were just all about good and evil, kick-ass beat-em-ups?

Anyway it stirred up the nostalgia in me again and I made Freya watch a bit of Hong Kong Phooey and Bananaman. So I've started this thread. What's your 5 favourite cartoons or children's programmes from your early childhood, number 1 being your all time favourite.

Here's mine:
5. Top Cat
4. Godzilla (not with Godzuki)
3. Captain Caveman
2. Fraggle Rock (Jim Henson's not the rubbish cartoon)
1. Battle of the Planets

I know mine will probably change after I read a few.
But here's a few progams and cartoons I can remember and enjoyed watching.
Stig of the dump.
Transformers
He-Man
Thunder Cats
Dungeons and Dragons.
I can think of another 10 easily now but I'll not list anymore for now.

great idea for a topic

Its a must Battle of the planets
not forgetting Ulysses 31
Danger mouse
Animated Star Trek
And always remember watching Mr Rossi (search for happiness) and remember it being a bit psychedelic and strange :D That's the cartoons can I be greedy and have 5 programs

Usual Thunderbirds
Grange Hill first series (I'm that old)
Monkey
An obscure one (the phoenix and the carpet tv programs some time late 1970's )
Harold Lloyd (think its classed as a kids program) :D thinking about that brought back some good memories must watch some of them on you tube now :)

I loved Transformers and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. But here's where it gets a bit sketchy - my memory tells me I was getting a little old when Dungeons and Dragons was out, a bit like Mysterious Cities of Gold. But I just looked it up and they're both 1983 and I was only 7! Whereas He man was 83-85 and Transformers wasn't until 87. Funny how you remember things wrong.

Does anyone remember 'tales of the golden monkey'?
I think that was the name. It was about a guy i think a war veteran who flew a plane that could land on water! He also had a bad limp from an old war injury. Ring any bells?

Sounds like another American aviation favourite like Roger Ramjet!

Like most people I imagine, my favourite programmes changed as I got older (plus I watched an awful LOT of TV as a kid!), so I'm splitting this into when I was very little (under 6) and when I was a little older (under 11). On that basis, the 5 that stand out more than most in my memory as being ones I really liked are:

Under 6 years-old:

Bod
Mr Benn
Trumpton
Pipkins
Camberwick Green

Under 11 years-old:

Battle of the Planets
The Six Million Dollar Man
The Incredible Hulk
Godzilla
Blake's 7 (But don't try watching it again as an adult! As a child I thought it ruled, but it turns out it was actually utter shite ;-))

And one highly dubious 'honourable' mention:
The Dukes of Hazzard (I was far too young and ignorant to understand the whole Confederate thing. I just liked the car jumps and exploding arrows :))

And over 11? Try adding 'The A-Team' and 'Robin of Sherwood' :)

This was a program it ran afew episodes I think. I always waited for it again but they just stopped.
I'll try to find it on YouTube.

A few more:
Fall Guy
Chips
Starkey and Hutch
Street Hawk
Buck Rogers
Laurel and Hardy
Centurions
Turtles
Although not exactly for children I always remember Mimi Vice once the theme tune started showing the fast boats.

Here's my top 5 but I can't help but add in some very close runner up's...

1. He-Man & the MOTU
2. Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles
3. Hale & Pace
4. The A-Team
5. Mr Bean

Runner up's
6. Rainbow
7. Thomas The Tank Engine ( lol )
6. Inspector Gadget

I really do believe btw that good programs died after the golden era of the 80's & 90's, I do wonder though if it is just due to growing up and having no attachment to newer programs as an adult, but when I look at these programs now they actually are all **** and really generic. I believe why shows were much better back then is partly because there was only a very small handful of TV channels and no internet, so more creativity and resources went into so few channels which resulted in much better ideas and stories, even the intro music was great. Mix that with people running out of ideas after decades of great shows and you end up with generic **** TV shows, sure you might get the odd 'gem' once every few years, but the 80's and 90's were absolutely packed with them along with non-stop amazing movies too, and look at what's also been happening to movies since the 90's its been almost like a mirror of how **** TV shows have gone.

I'm really glad I was lucky enough to have been a kid through both the 80's & 90's 8)

How can you diss Blake 7 watched it on you tube recently and still loved it, did have a bit of a thing for Cally (Jan Chappell) which may have clouded my opinion some what :D don't forget Chigley with Mr Dagenham (the flash salesman with his sports car and the butler Brackett with the endless corridor to answer the phone)

The only thing that seems to have got better and better is TV drama with shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Stranger Things on Netflix, Prime and HBO. And even normal TV with Broadchurch, The Missing, Luther etc.

The episode I rewatched most recently was the very first one, and I started wincing almost immediately it was so cringe-making. However did they dream up the technical marvel that was a perspex box with some lights in it... Sorry, I mean Orac? ;-). Mind you, as a child I liked B7 so much I actually wrote to 'Jim'll Fix It' requesting that I have a wrist-teleport ring and gun. I am delighted to report I wasn't chosen to go on the show!

Oh yeah I should have mentioned that I was actually thinking about kids shows when I posted that.

But yeah that's true actually when I think about the dramas that are on TV/Internet now they are amazing, the production value and the budgets put into TV series' can rival what's put into Hollywood films, and the quality of them and the stories are very gripping and addictive and each episode is like a short movie, TV dramas were never like this until recent years so yeah in that area they have greatly improved.
