What would you do for your Grail piece...?

Sometimes when I see the prices some pieces go for; ie the value of my entire loose and MOC collection, I get to wondering how far or what limit would you go to for your Grail piece...? Would people sell the majority of their collections for one piece? Recently I sold off a large DVD collection to purchase some SW items, I guess its swings and roundabouts, its still an investment of money of sorts.... ..

Just wondering what lengths other collectors might go to, like selling other collections, LP's, DVD's, other vintage figures etc?

Something I have never done is borrow money :? Would anyone ever do that...?

I would never borrow for SW items. However, I would reluctantly sell everything I owned if I was able to get it back easily enough. Except my books. :D

My only grail item now is a DT inner sabre for Vader. I don't think anything else I'm after is difficult to get.

To me it's not about the value, or the general agreement of what is rare and waht is not , to me it's about the items I like or I owned back in the day

So my grail piece is a MF In original box SW, but just the other day I got a loose Jawa, never had one before, and I acted like a two year old when it came in the post ( cheers Andy  )

Just my thoughts

Usually, when pieces like these come up, I'll definitely look at what I have and do a little clean out to try to help with the purchase. Luckily, with most of my more major purchases, the sellers are willing to split things up into multiple payments for me over a few months which helps a lot too.

I had one of my high 2013 want pieces just come up in fact, so it has had me finally trying to move on some vehicles I picked up ages ago that I've never had room to display and I was fortunate enough to happen on some decent items for flipping lately too.

As far as taking from other collections go, I have done that too. I thinned out a few extras in my Transformers collection, with some prodding from Joe, ;) for other pieces. Lately, I've also thought about thinning out my video game collection as well, as right now, it is just sitting on shelves in a closet when there's some decent money tied up into that too.

Yeah if a grail piece comes up for sale guys just contact me and I will tell you what to sell to pay for it

Back on topic - I've almost always sold to buy, there have been times when a nice piece has shown up which luckily coincided with a birthday or Christmas so I could get it as a "gift" but generally I sell things I can replace to buy things I can't (or things I shouldn't pass up).

As I am not buying at the moment I am hoping no grail pieces appear for the next 6 months or so :) Running short of spare organs you see ..

It all depends how much disposable income you've got. These days if a grail piece came up for sale I'd be looking to sell of parts of my collection to help fund the new item. I realised along time ago that I can barely afford to have one hobby far less have several active hobbys. Again it all comes down to what you collect and what your budget is. I'd recommend never going into debt for your collection unless you can cover your bills. Iv joked about eating beans and toast but seriously if you have to take drastic measures then (the Grail item) just isnt worth acquiring.

My grail pieces are just reseal ESB 31 backs (or less). I have relatively low standards. Loads of them knocking about so i wouldn't have to do much extreme action for those :D

The last time a grail level piece (which was actually 9 grail level pieces...9 moc 1st gen carded Polish in 2 separate lots, but becoming available at the same time) came up for me. I flipped a bunch of MOC Uzay's that I had originally bought cheaply to hold onto for a while to make more $ off of, as well as a bunch of other non US items I had stashed away for rainy day sales and pre sold a couple of the cardbacks and extra figures that were in the lots to friends for my cost(a. because they're friends and b. to offset the overall cost). I took less than I could have held out for for many of the items I sold, but in the end I was able to complete a set that it took me almost 17 years to finish(without pissing anyone off...amazingly enough). It was one of the proudest days I ever had as a collector when I assembled them all into one picture.

I like the idea of buying stock cheaply to resell at a higher value later on to obtain unaffordable or unavailable pieces. Wouldn't do it as a business though

I find the key is to have a grail piece that you could afford if it came up for sale, that way you're not chasing a dream that can never come true :D

Yeh that's what i reckon too. My own collecting reflects that at the moment. Not after anything that's particularly rare, just things i can justify spending the money on and enjoy owning.

I think we may have missed the point of this thread. If it were possible i would travel back in time and go to a toy shop to purchase ESB back figures brand new :D That's what Marty McFly should have done instead of fixing all the cock ups he made by bumping into his parents - stock the Delorean up with mint Star Wars toys

All about ones perception

Like I say for me. It's original boxed MF...which will be nothing to others

All that glisters is not gold :p

It's about you and what makes you buzz, I'm not a millionaire, but wife and family are my grail achieved

Anyway....i will wait for the inevitable onslaught now
