Apart from the obvious 3

I always loved forbidden planet, the first ever film to use digital sound effects & such a IMO great all round sci-fi classic, the concept behind the base subject matter is even now somehow intensely terrifying & for its time the special effects were brilliant, even by today's standards I think this film holds its own & one I will never tire of watching.

If you have never seen it your missing a real peach of a movie & on a side note - Leslie Nielsen in a serious role

So whats yours?

I loved the original 'Tron', but probably ET. It was the first film I saw at the cinema (i think)

Tough one Frank, very tough...

I can't choose one and have gone to bits because I can't choose ESB

Can I come back after a think and a wink

Wicky wild wild west with out doubt..... wait no scratch that, back to the future for the sheer genius of the interwoven storyline :) childhood films always seem to leave a longer lasting affect :)

I really liked Running Man, Robocop and Terminator when I was a kid - although maybe that was becuase they were 18's and I wasn't supposed to be watching them (bit like when my mate lent me Fatal Attraction so that I could see Glen Close's boobies)

my top ten scifi's 8)
1 empire strikes back
2 aliens
3 back to the future
4 a new hope
5 return of the jedi
6 alien
7 casshern
8 dark city
9 2001
10 event horizon

I knew someone would go for Blade Runner, but I'm in agreement with CC- just never got it and I was bored most of the way through it.

I love all of the Alien films (apart from 4) so they're always contenders.

I really like Danny Boyle's Sunshine but the bit about the other captain just let it down for me.

One film that I just adore is 12 Monkeys. That would be in my top 5 sci-fi

I loved Event Horizon as a kid as it used to scare the **** out of me.... but when I watch it now I realise just how **** it is :D

One!?
Jesus, that's tough!

With a few of the others, I never quite got Bladerunner. Decent enough film, but like the book, I just don't quite see what the fuss is about.

Alien, Aliens both brilliant films. I also loved Krull as a kid. Film's pretty pish, but I must have watched it a 100 times and it still makes me smile. Plus the musical score is brilliant.
Dune might be worth a mention, though again the film isn't great. I think it suffers cos the book is soo good and the only way to really do it justice would be to have a LOTR's typed budget and Peter Jackson's dedication.

So many to choose from!

Yeah sorry very tough to narrow it down to just 1 init, but thought it would get the little grey cells working over time, some great choices so far guys.

& as for Dune - it has been re made in to a 3 film mine (not so ) epic, which IMO falls VERY far short of the first one they made, it was a great film but only about a fifth of the book made it to the screen so very confusing if you had not read the book(s), I would love to see it given another go, but like you say it would take an epic effort & a huge budget to make it a viable option, but boy would it be good :)

Loved Blade runner myself & TBH I can see the future ending up very much like that :|

Event horizon was another classic & remided me very much of forbidden planet TBH.

The Aliens films were/are classic, hope they do a lot more with them as the latest installment was a bit all over the place, so I hope they do more to tie them in the the old ones, fingers crossed eh.

Have you guys all seen forbidden planet?

Seen a few clips of one of the new Dune films. It just looked terrible. Horrible CG everywhere, really badly done CG at that (was George Lucas involved in it?), the acting looked like a school play and the bit i saw wasn't in the books anywhere. Why do they feel the need to add unnecessary detail/plot to one of the best Sci Fi novels of all time? It's not as if it's a 200 page book that needs padding out it's ruddy massive.

Rant over.

Now please no one mention I am Legend!

You are legend Weaz! :p

& Dune could be epic, not like its just one book, & when the author died the son has not picked up the gauntlet, its an entire universe & may I dare to say it on a SW forum - more detailed & entwined than the SW universe - heads for the hill's wearing his tin hat.

Exactly, so why re-make Dune and add in a load of shite that's not in any of the books (i think i've read the first 2 or 3 either way the bits i saw couldn't have come from a later book as they would have moved on beyond this point)

They don't really tend to make classic sci-fi films any more. In fact i'm struggling to think of even one from the last 20 years... there must be one... umm....

Anyway, from back in the day, apart from Star Wars i've always considered Alien to be one of the greatest films (sci-fi or otherwise) ever made. Just a near perfect movie. Film makers are still trying to capture that creepy authentic futuristic/rustic style today and all the billions of $$ in the world and CGI hasn't even got anyone close in 30+ years. Like most great films the emphasis was on tension and atmosphere created by patient and artful direction rather than flare and pizzaz! and a realistic, gag/smart-quip free, almost MIke Leigh like script filled with wonderful incidental dialogue and seemingly meaningless chitta-chatter helping to create real believable characters made up of a near unknown cast. Something you'd never see in a sci-fi nowadays.
There are lots of sci-fi's both i loved from that era but i guess the pick of the bunch would be...

1. Alien
2. E.T
3. Terminator
4. Back to the Future
5. Blade Runner

Now I come to think of it

Dr Who Peter Cushing films especially London 2150ad
The day the earth stood still
All quatermass films
War of the worlds

All classics, good storytelling and acting

Completely concur with you on Alien Pete, such great suspense and akin to the Original Trilogy, hooks onto the idea that space travel is a dirty business, not all stupid shiny CGI ships and wotnot.
Bladerunner is sci-fi noir par excellence, so beautiful, pure and perfect movie.
Gotta love the shout outs for Tron, Terminator and Robocop.

One of my faves is Tetsuo - The Iron Man. Hardcore Japanes cyberpunk mayhem and definately NOT one for matinee Sunday afternoon with the family type viewing!

SW kinda kickstarted a great wave of kids movies - such as Tron, Time Bandits, Krull, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Goonies etc.
Halycon days!
