I just wondered what everyones introductions to collecting Vintage star wars stuff was?

I got into it when I was about 4, when I went to a tabletop sale at my local sports field and hall, and found a return of the jedi annual comic book. It had a picture of the at-sts on the front, and looked my sorta thing straight away.

I took that annual with me everywhere. My gran and grandad used to do car boot sales every weekend, and my uncle had been into star wars and collected the toys about 10 years prior, in 1984. So they knew what star wars was and stuff. I was overjoyed when my gran brought over a carrier bag to my house filled with figures that they had found on the car boot. None with accessories, and mostly comprised of degenerates from Jabbas Palace.

I remember I used to use cotton buds (that you use to clean your ears) as lightsabers for luke and darth vader. I miss the days when you could find vintage star wars stuff on car boot sales.

So yeah. My mum used to buy and read millers antiques and collectibles books, and they were always filled with star wars stuff, so I realised at a young age, it was best to play very carefully with my toys as some people deemed them valuable.

So what was anyone else's introduction? I'm guessing most people on here were lucky and witnessed the launch of the movie in 77/78 and got the toys the following year? What was the first figure you got?

I got an R2D2 for Christmas from my cousins aged about 4 or 5...

I opened it up and started crying because I didn't want it

Love the cotton buds thing, me and Mumbo used to equip Snake eyes and Stormshadow with de-cottoned cotton buds. :D

The speeder bikes were epic... no money, hand me down clothes, absent father but the first kids in school to get the speederbikes. Mum rocked 8)

TIE Fighter Pilot, AT-AT and AT-AT Commander for my birthday.

Long story, but it was meant to be Action Man.

Apparently I went nuts and started dragging the boxed AT-AT out of the shop window. I wasn't much bigger than it.

I knew exactly what it was, even though Id only seen Star Wars once, 3 months before and had not seen Empire.

Which goes to show the subconscious evil power of Lucas and his merchandising.

I think the toys have 'BUY ME' and 'THIS IS GOD' written on them in invisible ink.

For me saw the first film in 1990, my nan brought a load of second hand Star Wars, probably about 40 figures and 15 vehicles ranging from the falcon, x wing to at at and snow speeder, set them all up in her lounge, landing gears down and all... Then I walked in! Still have every thing from that fateful day!

It seems that universally grandparents are awesome!

Diggin' these stories. And Im glad Im not alone with my cotton buds as sabers!

Awesome Spooked 8)

Grandparents are king, my Granddad got me my Falcon and our AT AT. Jr Jr's Granddad has come up trumps time and time again with Star Wars goodies for him too.

Cool memories.

My first toys we're from the US that my grandparents got me when they were out there on holiday. Vader, Luke, R2 and C3PO. Taking them to school when nobody else had them was my 15 minutes of fame :)

I think my first Palitoy figure was Chewie and the Death Star cardboard playset. When my mother originally took me to see Star Wars I shat myself and hid behind the seat when Chewie came on the screen roaring - so she thought giving me Chewie would be funny.

My mum and grandparents spoiled me wrotten over the years collecting it for me.

Had many years of playing with Star Wars toys - thanks to mum. It's actually due to her recently passing away that I've decided to get back into collecting. Good memories.

I am ashamed to say that when the original film came out I was not really bothered I was more into fishing
However when ROTJ came out on VHS to rent :!: I sat and watched it with my son 3 times....then it began
I bought the first figures for him from a bargain shop, Gam Guard and C 3 po

Then in 1990 ish, my m in law and f in law bought a job lot of incomplete ships loose, MF B Wing. XWing Rebel Transporter, and about 30 beaters
Those babies got played with ( by my son as well  )
Grandparents are wonderful people.

Sadly the ships and figs were lost over the years, recently my son and I have begun to collect again...much to the dismay of our other halves :!:

We are havin a great time though  SW allows you to collect, but also let's you be a 10 year old again, the buzz of getting figures through the post, seeing a £1 figure in corner bric a brac shop , not many other things allow you to do that as an adult, so Mr Lucas I thank you for the Bounty that you have spawned for us all

Star Wars was the first film I saw in the cinema (aged 5) 1st figure was R2D2, followed by Chewie then Ben, happy memories :D
