My Wife Karen asked me yesterday if there had been any good music released this century, and my reaction was to say "are you kidding?" I think this century has been fantastic for music and it seems to be getting better all of the time.
Guitar based music and even decent song craft seemed to disappear up until 2001 under a huge barrage of rap and hip-hop, which is fine if you like that kind of thing. Now that bands have found that they can make big money from the live circuit and festivals, they all want to put a string of hit records together that can get a crowd on its feet.
I quickly typed put a small list of some of my top tracks of this century, which was tough because I have full respect for the likes of Nirvana, Jack White, Mumford and Sons, Foo Fighters, Noel Gallagher, Muse, Green Day, Kasabian and so many others. I also have very broad musical tastes, so I'll happily listen to old fashioned style songstresses The Pierces just as happily as heavy synth by Pendulum. Maybe I'm just weird.
I'd be interested to know what other people's top tracks of this century are. Here are some of mine…
Dandy Warhols: Bohemian Like You.
Arcade Fire: Reflektor.
Pendulum: Propane Nightmares.
The Gossip: Standing in the Way of Control.
Evanescence: Bring Me To Life.
Belle and Sebastian: The Blues are Still Blue.
Of Monsters of Men: Little Talks.
The Pierces: Glorious.
The Holloways: Two Left Feet.
Keane: Everybody's changing.
The Hives: Because I Wanna.
