My Wife Karen asked me yesterday if there had been any good music released this century, and my reaction was to say "are you kidding?" I think this century has been fantastic for music and it seems to be getting better all of the time.

Guitar based music and even decent song craft seemed to disappear up until 2001 under a huge barrage of rap and hip-hop, which is fine if you like that kind of thing. Now that bands have found that they can make big money from the live circuit and festivals, they all want to put a string of hit records together that can get a crowd on its feet.

I quickly typed put a small list of some of my top tracks of this century, which was tough because I have full respect for the likes of Nirvana, Jack White, Mumford and Sons, Foo Fighters, Noel Gallagher, Muse, Green Day, Kasabian and so many others. I also have very broad musical tastes, so I'll happily listen to old fashioned style songstresses The Pierces just as happily as heavy synth by Pendulum. Maybe I'm just weird.

I'd be interested to know what other people's top tracks of this century are. Here are some of mine…

Dandy Warhols: Bohemian Like You.
Arcade Fire: Reflektor.
Pendulum: Propane Nightmares.
The Gossip: Standing in the Way of Control.
Evanescence: Bring Me To Life.
Belle and Sebastian: The Blues are Still Blue.
Of Monsters of Men: Little Talks.
The Pierces: Glorious.
The Holloways: Two Left Feet.
Keane: Everybody's changing.
The Hives: Because I Wanna.

This century sucks for music..... i rarely listen to new stuff. From 2000 onwards these spring to mind from my playlist

adele - turning tables / someone like you
Kasabian - fire
bloc party - so here we are / flux
prodigy - omen
Snow patrol - you could be happy / open your eyes / chasing cars
Kings of keon- sex on fire
Keane - changing / somewhere we know?
u2 -beautifal day

but nothing like what we had in the 90's.

Thats because of your age, not the quality of music
I was a teen in the 90s but now im older and wiser the 80s for me as an adult is the best decade for music

Same here, this century's music is 99% ****. There is the odd one here and there that is good otherwise I only listen to 70's, 80's and 90's stuff.

Maybe I'm getting old

When i think of 90's music, i think off these guys...

Music from this century worth mentioning aswell:

Elbow - Grounds for Divorce
Elbow - One day like this

It's all subjective of course, but my favourite band from the last 5-10 years are The Mystery Jets. I like pretty much everything they've done. I also like the first two Keane albums, but not so much any of their more recent stuff.

My first thought is that the last 15 years have been terrible in music. Main stream pop seems to consist of big band crap churned out by TV talent shows and complete bollocks teeny pop not much better than Aqua'a 'Barbie Girl'. But then there have been some cool commercial bands in among all the turd.

A few years back a few cool guitar bands surfaced - the likes of White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand. The Ting Tings were pretty good. I liked 'Hey Ya' by Outkast, and Gaultier's 'Somebody I used to know'. My two favorite bands from the last 15 years are fairly unknown but have had some commercial success - Turin Brakes and Sky Larkin. Generally though I listen to pop music that the kids think is cool and cringe inside.
