I've just returned home from a tech-free week away in Bergerac, so I missed all the fun with the Rogue One trailer, but I did have some Star Wars with me. A book called 'Waiting For Star Wars' by Phil Heeks. Im not sure if Phil is a member on the forum, but I believe from reading about his adventures that he is an old compatriot of Mark our very own SubLevelStudios, and I wanted to share my thoughts about Phil's book.
In short, it is quite short, and that is literally the only negative thing I can say about it. Loved it and could have happily read twice as much, maybe Phil will be back with Volume 2 in another 30 years!
If you are British and were a Star Wars fan in the 70s and 80s then this book is like Jenny Agutter from American Werewolf setting you up with a hospital drip and pumping your veins with pure nostalgia. So many memories are evoked and wonderfully described by Phil, from early glimpses of Star Wars on Tiswas to scooching down in cinema seats so you could sit through a movie twice. Phil proves to be a very amiable 'tour guide' as he takes you on a really quite personal autobiography of his childhood obsession. If you are looking for a technical guide to Star Wars collecting then this isn't that book, and in truth it doesn't focus too much on the action figure side of collecting, as Phil isn't too picky - really he collects pretty much anything and everything connected with the OT. Phil moves things along at a brisk pace, and his anecdotes and observations contain a nice strain of gentle humour and banter.
A really nice easy read, and I cant imagine any of the regulars on SWFUK not enjoying it!
