A heads up on fraud that just happened to me this morning.

Someone managed to spoof a payment request from ebay US for 399.90 USD of ebay seller fees that was accepted by paypal and processed. Paypal then automatically suspended my account due to a suspected fraudulent transaction.

I don't sell on ebay, and the ebay item quoted doesn't exist.

Currently waiting for paypal to recover the money. I also called ebay who had no record of the transaction. I gave theme copies of the paypal receipt and a fake recipt from ebay that I also recieved.

What is really worrying is that it doesn't look like either my ebay or paypal account has been logged into with someone finding out what my password is for this fraud to have taken place!

hofefully you'll get your money back mate

I've had those emails where they look to be legitimate from Ebay & Paypal confirming that there are funds etc in my Paypal account

these guys are very clever, but Paypal isnt as safe as it possibly should be

Keep us informed though how you get on

I don't understand how they got the money out of your account. I assume you didn't accept the request, so how the hell was money transfered out?

Neither do I. I think they worked out how to fool paypal into thinking it was a legitimate transaction from ebay. I presume ebay sellers fees are taken from your paypal account automatically without the need for you to accept them or not.

As you weren't actually required to agree/accept anthing in this fraud, I'd be expecting PP or Ebay to refund the money immediately, and then them have to try and get it back from the scammer themselves. If it's simply gone from your account without you doing anything and they expect you to wait for them to recover it, I would be speaking to my solicitor or the police!

God knows PP are useless at the best of times!

thats what Paypal normally do - they settle with you and then try getting the money back from the seller

anyway Paypal IS ebay so there's maybe a link in there for scammers to hack in to?????

i agree with weasel, if money has been taken out of your account without your concent its their fault, so no waiting for it to be refunded, i would contact them and say you either pay the money back via express chaps payment or you will charge them interest on the money they have taken. dont take any crap its your money they have and believe me they would do the same toy you!!

thats sucks... and how the **** can any of us stop it happening to our own accounts? have you bought a lot of stuff from the states lately jason? what was the ebay sellers name or was that fake too?

I've bought one thing this year. It's not a transaction from another seller. It's a faked transaction for ebay seller fees. As far as I can see, someone has found a loophole in the way ebay charges it's seller fees to paypal and exploited a loophole in it. I can't see how I can demand an instant refund from paypal. They have to invesigate fraudulent transactions and go through due process. A guy at ebay did tell me I would definately get my money refunded but couldn't say how long it would take. I've googled the relevant info and so far have found a couple of other people who have had the same thing happen to them.

They withdrew money from my paypal account which then debited my bank account. The paypal fraud dept have now ruled in my favour and have said then money will be refunded within 5 working days.

The money has also been credited back to my paypal account. Paypal say the only way it can have happened is if someone found my password out with spyware etc. But my home computer is clean, and that's the only place I've used paypal from recently.

Doesnt have to be spyware, people on the inside have been known to use or sell details to fraudsters, that happened with my credit card.
