Unfortunately Facebook isn't the place for educating, because for every interesting noteworthy post made, there are a hundred "what's in the box" posts. Anything of value just gets buried. People say "use the search" but there's two problems with that - firstly if you're new, you don't know what to search for. Browsing is much more effective, that's why we have the reference library section here. Somebody who knows nothing about collecting could spend ten minutes in there without knowing anything before hand and become an expert in minutes.

Secondly even if you do know what to search for, Facebook has no search settings, just a single search bar. Just try putting "toy toni" or "recard" into the search field in any group, it returns a load of useless crap.
 
I'm still chuckling at the forums are dead thing. Someone better go tell Apple as I'm currently on there getting advice about something.. oh and for a moodle question Im on the moodle forum.. oh and a joomla template question Im using ... etc etc.

I also use a football forum... yup.. forums are dead.

My background's software development with quite a bit of experience in user interface development, and I agree with everything you're saying - it seems to me that collaborative/groupware systems in particular have taken a step backwards over the past 10 years, and much of that seems to be driven by the interfaces used for social media. Maybe I'm just using the wrong systems.

With regard to Echo it really frustrates me that the admin don't make enough effort to share knowledge or encourage the share of knowledge. Even with the limitations of facebook I'm sure more could be done.
 
Absolutely, but what are your motivations.

Are they to be part of a huge, diverse community, sharing knowledge and interest across multiple platforms.

Or is it to simply be a cult that has got "my dad is bigger than yours" as it's entire measure of success?

Forums aren't dead, not at all; I'd imagine they have a very good 10 years left in them before they follow the old bulletin boards and email user groups in being pretty quiet.
What I did say, and there's no denying this, their usage has dropped over the last 3 or 4 years significantly.
This was no slight on this forum or any other, just acknowledgment that how we socialise online is evolving.
Facebook will go the same way eventually.

NO IT HASN'T! :lol: are you on the wind up or just determined to ignore all the facts presented to you? Saying it over again isn't going to make it true. I've already shown you stats showing the forum is getting busier year on year since 2013. I can show you a graph from even further back if you like.

I agree that Rebel Scum is quieter than it used to be, but again as I've already said several pages ago that's because the site owner has no interest in it. I'm sure you know how much work goes in to keeping interest up in your brand or whatever, that doesn't only apply to forums. There are plenty of dead Facebook groups too.

Not sure if you are deliberately ignoring what I am saying, pretty much all tech giants are using forums to address CS issues. So thats all Android and Apple phones, and all the main phone package suppliers. I'd say forum usage has grown exponentially in the last 5 years. I don't know how that will be replaced. They'll likely be more integration across current and new platforms.. be interesting to hear what you think will replace it in 10 years.

Facebook is a great tool, it could be a lot better. But its trying to be everything, but not quite pulling it off brilliantly (messenger its latest frustrating example). A jack of all trades of the social media world. Its still the go to place, just... but it wants to be a selling platform, etc etc..
 
On the subject of forums being dead, I was just reading the Mac Rumors forum and happened to notice this thread, which has had 180 replies (8 pages) in the last five hours. And then I checked out the same article on their Facebook page, which has more "likes" but a mere 37 comments. Yeah, forums are dead...

What I did say, and there's no denying this, their usage has dropped over the last 3 or 4 years significantly.

I've moved this to off topic as it's becoming less and less about Star Wars figures with every post. I do think there is value to the conversation so won't delete it, but it's a stain on the vintage chat section which is full of otherwise positive posts.
 
Anyone want to start a new U.K. based forum called the Reverberation Base U.K. Trading Vintage Star Wars 1977-78 with me?

There's the solution to all of these problems. Compromise! And a new group! Because the hobby needs more groups!

Dan, don't you think there is a reason EB gets so much flack? Seriously, like we're all Elitist snobs?

I joined Echo back in the early days when there were around 200 members. I did lots of buying and selling, including deals with Adam. It was very relaxed and for a time my favourite place to visit on FB. Since then the group has grown and at the same time descended into more and more chaos, with drama after drama, rule after rule. Members who are instant experts and put out misinformation with little or no challenge.

It's got rules coming out of arse yet nothing is said by Admins about 100 incomplete "uncirculated" Luke Jedi's and Xwings getting flogged for double what they're worth and a ban on posts linking to anything outside of Echo. Then the same stuff gets posted every other day. "is it just me or have prices gone up" was today's corker.

And the page just rolls on ready to start again the next day. "Look at these old Argos catalogue" that have been post 15 times this month. "What's a YPS Stormtrooper" Sterling stuff.

I don't see myself as elitist, yes have healthy collection but I still come here and ask questions, difference being I get informed opinion. Where on Echo I've got to scroll through a load of bollocks to get to the any resembling an answer unless I want to know the value of a loose Yak Face. If your definition of being informed or educated is Elitist then okay **** it, I'm elitist.

The last few pages of this thread have made me reevaluate why I still bother with Echo. Not any of the other FB pages I'm a member of, just Echo.

If I had gone on to echo and had a conversation of the nature you've had with Edd with you or one of the other admins, I'd of been banned. Without question. And that's the difference, we're adults who collect toys and like to DISCUSS it in an open manner with being worried about being banned. That's it, no more no less.

it's you that's turned this into a pissing contest and shown absolute contempt towards Edd and this forum. Yes this thread calls out the ******** mostly on Echo and because if it was called out on the page people would be banned.

And to that point I haven't bought or sold on your page for over 18 months, I only remained a member because I was worried I was going to miss something important to the hobby. The truth is the only thing I am going to miss is a bunch of over priced mostly incomplete loose figures. So your 10,084 members is now 10,083.

Although by the time I submit this post you'll probably be at 10,100 members.......woo-hoo.
 
Part of the problem is with the "whats in the box" posts et al (which I'm not a huge fan of) is if we delete them we get accused of censorship.

If we put a rule in place to stop people posting them up we get accused of having too many rules.

It's a bit of a catch 22 :roll:

I like forums, they cant be beaten for knowledge base or quality of articles, that's never been an argument. I don't quite know why it's decended into a discussion on whats best? Both have their uses.

Anyway... I'm going to try and address some of the issues and concerns raised as best I can.
