This is why Ebay is a minefield for Newbie Collectors

Was having a look through Ebay last night and saw loads of auctions that would have confused a newbie collector or duped them into buying repro/fake items

First up you have the old "ultra rare" production error piece backed up with "A trader used the relevant batch number either side of the figure and it turns out a hand full of these mistakes were made" - what utter bullshit - as if this item would have hit the shelves looking like that

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Star-Wars-Figure-Princess-Leia-Boushh-4-LOM-ULTRA-RARE-ERROR-ON-FIGR-/271106460949?pt=UK_ToysGames_ActionFigures_ActionFigures_JN&hash=item3f1f344d15&nma=true&si=SW4Zb0MwBRznKqe3E2%2Bmk5ccZ5Y%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Then you have the clever wording - "rifle is 100% genuine" - yes it is - but not for this rare figure, it is a 100% genuine IG88 rifle worth about £1.00

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Star-Wars-Jann-Tosh-Droids-With-Rifle-/121023458347?pt=UK_ToysGames_ActionFigures_ActionFigures_JN&hash=item1c2d8f6c2b&nma=true&si=SW4Zb0MwBRznKqe3E2%2Bmk5ccZ5Y%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Next up are the reproduction weapons - again, a bit of clever wording "Some have repro weapons and cloaks - see photo to make choice" - how on earth can you look at the picture of the Lando General and tell that is a repro weapon - but I bet it is

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-STAR-WARS-ORIGINAL-FIGURES-MANY-TO-CHOOSE-FROM-D-/230881119049?pt=UK_ToysGames_ActionFigures_ActionFigures_JN&var=530100142263&hash=item35c1964b49

Next up you have the old 'I'm selling this for someone who is no longer with us' - which 9 times out of 10 you can read as 'I know that this lot is full of repro crap but if I plead ignorance then I think I'll get away with it'
One look at the weapons in this little lot and you can spot a large number of grey repro weapons

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-STARWARS-FIGURES-/130808720089?pt=UK_Collectables_SciFi_fantasyCollectables_EH&hash=item1e74ceaad9

Finally, you have this crap "A MINT C9.8 GRADE IMMACULATE RARE VINTAGE KENNER 1979 BLUE SNAGGLETOOTH" - guaranteed to have been touched up - and also packed with the wrong (and probably repro) weapon.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-1979-MINT-BLUE-SNAGGLETOOTH-ON-STARWARS-CUSTOM-DESIGNED-CARDBACK-L-KBID-/350649853474?pt=UK_ToysGames_ActionFigures_ActionFigures_JN&hash=item51a45c2622

Trouble with this guy's auctions is that people think, well OK I know that the card is repro but the figure looks good - thing is, if you are into reproducing these things then you are unlikely to be worried about touching up the figures and are very likely to include repro weapons. Or in this case, there is every chance that this is even a reproduction (Poon) figure

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-1977-STORMTROOPER-ON-12-BACK-STARWARS-JAPANESE-TAKARA-STUNNING-CARDBACK-/350642957709?pt=UK_ToysGames_ActionFigures_ActionFigures_JN&hash=item51a3f2ed8d

As a community we should be reporting all of these auctions and flaming those that put them up. There is no excuse for any of this and it only serves to destroy this hobby. I have recently bought a set from a long time collector on RS - 50% of the weapons for the Last 17 figures were reproduction yet he had bought them over 10 years ago in good faith.

We have all been through our loose collections and found that pesky repro weapon that somehow eluded us when we bought the figure. However, some of these new collectors are adding £100's of crap to their collections without knowing.

yeah your right there is load of crap! you look at the auctions and right of the bottom of the descriptions it says unsure if 100% original! it was easier say 10 years ago on ebay not so much repro crap! one guy who annoys me on ebay at the moment is pelletmobile or pelletpete or something selling recarded crap looks good mind  .................. pelletmobile2 thats it...heres an example doesnt say repro untill end of description.......add him to our ebay naughty list i reckon

I just mentioned this in the thread re the carded blue snag.
"Policy overview

Items that bear a company's official brand name or logo can be listed as long as the products were lawfully made by, for, or with the consent of, that company.

eBay doesn't allow replicas, counterfeit items, or unauthorised copies to be listed on eBay. Unauthorised copies may include things that are bootlegged, illegally duplicated, or pirated. These kinds of things may infringe on someone's copyright or trademark.

For examples of what you can and can't sell on eBay, please see the guidelines below.

Please make sure your listing follows these guidelines. If it doesn't, it may be removed, and you may be subject to a range of other actions, including limits of your buying and selling privileges and suspension of your account.

You should report listings that offer counterfeit items or replicas."

How does he get away with it?

If you guys have time ( it takes 1 minute ) please keep reporting his stuff to ebay. Perhaps one day he'll finally get banned.

All you do is click 'report item'

Copyright & trademark

reason- couterfeit

detail - counterfeit

description (just copy & paste this if you like)

Has company's name & logo on it, but it wasn't made or endorsed by the company. So it's illegal.

I just love his:

"these figures have been professionally and painstakingly invisibley resealed to there original cardbacks"

Makes it sound like it was torture for his to do this. That Blue snag is a crock of ****, it didnt come on a cardback so why would you now after 30 odd years decide actually, that looks so much better on a cardback I better buy it. What a load of old ****!!!

Not only that but he says REPO, that gets on my tits as much as the rest, its REPRO as in REPRODUCTION not repossessed!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! got that off my chest.

Thanks for the heads up guys, in the past I have not been too bothered about these 'recards' that are usually listed as such, but as Iain say's for the new collector a lot of money can go in the wrong direction and as AJ says they are all reportable fakes that eBay apparently does not condone. Reporting some of these listings is definitely worth considering.

I love how in the description for the A-Wing he states this:

Weapon: Repo
is for effect only

WTF does that mean. Didnt this figure come with a weapon.

My blue snag will look better and it is 100% fake ..........Edit: No flaming...you could never confuse mine with the real one......no peg holes, rougher cast and his arms and legs do not move (Glued on).

To be honest I use to buy 100% from eBay and nothing from the forums. Now I'd say I get 20% on eBay and that's mostly oddball that no one cares about and the rest from forums.

I especially think since eBay changed the listings it's must make it a real chore for new collectors.

Guys, I wanted to share this one with you while we're at it:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-M...4187?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item2a2643cd9b

Oh my lord, I have to have this mega rare test shot prototype unpainted hand painted mock up figure.

Worst thing is that actually somebody bid on it. :(

http://www.ebay.de/itm/160916286857?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

This one is a nice one too, I bet Joe will be all over it once he sees it.
As you can see this has been on eBay Germany. What the seller says is that this has blue limbs that have not (!!!!) been painted. 'Plastic is blue'. Listing headline says 'Prototype/oddity'.

Oh boy...

Its Kojak Fortuna, where does that head come from...

Don't know about the 8D8, it looks like it has been dyed rather than painted. the dye would take better on different parts of the plastic. Then again it could be exactly what its claimed to be...

Another one to add to the laundry-list of crock listings:

'Item pictured may not be the exact item you receive'

...normally followed by the line 'I sell a LOT of Star Wars stuff on eBay, so I don't take photos of each individual figure, but what you receive will possibly resemble something along the lines of what you see here.'

I'm sure we can all bid in confidence on something like that!

absolutely, why pay £6750, when you can have this instead....

Lol - my friend KittyButler uses that one - I once bought an Ugnaught bag from them and when it arrived it was grubby as **** - I said this in my feedback (although still left positive) and they blocked me from bidding on anything else

I believe this is what they call Re-Carded.
This is the very rare vintage Star Wars Jawa in Mint condition.
This piece is unpunched and is one of the rarest.
LOOKS AMAZING.

I believe this is what they call Re-tarded. 8)

They are odd though that lot, both on Ebay and in person.
