I thought this might be of interest to some of the newer guys, it's a great article (very true + quite funny) describing how collecting changes over time for us all, the author (Docatomic, who also posts on RS) really covered collecting to an absolute T.

Flycasuals post in the latest acquisition thread:

I hear ya Joe. The "hunting and aquiring" journey is certainly what I find the most fun. WTB threads are almost a spoiler.

Made me think of myself at the Stage 1 and 2 period of my own collecting when I built up a massive amount of **** because everything looked appealing!

Anyways, thought you guys might appreciate it, it's a fun look at how collecting usually plays out for the majority of collectors, I think I was for the longest time happily in Stage 3 but recently seem to be going back to Stage 1 and 2 again as my interests change!

The Doc forgot stage seven...... Start collecting again.

I think that collecting is something quite intrinsic. Im not sure if the urge can ever really go away.

Good point, would agree with that 100%

I've hit all stages with different parts of my collection

I think 3 to 5 can be cyclical.

You focus

You complete

You get bored

you refocus! Here you either progress to 6 and start again or just add to what you had originally 'completed'

very interesting article and all very true every one knows it easy to get carried away with it all
and id say for a lot of people it is all about the hunt
i was looking at the authors collection loving those old robot they look very cool

Nice article, I guess I have been at stage 5 several times, but when I've been considering selling, the passion has always come back stronger,
so that has kept me from selling because boredom.
Stage 6 has happened, but only because of unforeseen bills and need of fast cash...
I guess I'm now at stage 2 and 3....
Writing this almost made me feel like an alcoholic though, is that bad?

Luckily while it is an addiction you usually don't act like a prick when you spend money on toys and buying too many toys doesn't make you puke up all over yourself.

Well, some collectors are pricks but that is another story

There are far too many of those around. Just buying and selling on eBay is enough to drive you frickin' mad! The number of dispute cases opened must be incredible.

Speaking of being mad: At which stage do you decide to collect partially destroyed vintage items for extortionate prices? I hope I don't get to that one. :D

I don't mean to single you out Weaz but I don't really get why you stick around on the boards

I know that sounds incredibly rude and I don't mean it like that lol! Just that if I had got bored and wanted to sell up I wouldn't bother taking part in the discussions any more. Mind you I think you said once you work at home so this is probably a 10 minute boredom reliever when you have finished looking at all your special sites isn't it ;)

Seriously though- are you practically out of the hobby as far as buying + collecting goes?

I have wondered that myself sometimes TBH. I guess I come on for the banter, I like slagging you lot off.
I still like to see people's collections, I just don't have any interest in buying.

PS, "taking part in the discussions"? Have I ever contributed anything meaningful to any SW based discussion!?

I was just being nice to make up for the earlier part of my post which basically told you to do one

You still got your Ledy MOC?

Yeah still got my LL's, the Glasslite MOC's and the Takara MOC's. They are the only things that still interest me, collecting wise. You never know I may well start up again and finish the runs (not the LL obviously).

I hope you do mate, besides the longer you hang around here the longer we can abuse you
