Talk about new Star Wars movie, do not read if you have NOT seen it

I think they have left it for the second film to introduce a backstory with a female character married to luke who have Rey as a daughter, that female character ( Mara Jade in EU) dies/killed ...by Ben as he turns to the dark side and becomes kylo Ren ( who was being trained at the academy by Luke), luke then goes to the island full of guilt and remorse, hence the final scene with Rey ( where you notice luke has tears in his eyes)

Just a theory but may be miles out.

I was trying to work out if that was a headstone Luke was stood over when Ray walk's up in the final moment's of the movie... You have some very good point's in regards to Ray's origins...

I hope Rey isn't Luke's daughter. That's part of what Lucas did with Jedi and the prequels, making the universe smaller (so much so that now at the start of A New Hope Darth Vader is persuing his daughter on a ship with droid he built above a planet where he was a slave, his mum died and his son lives, who is in fact the twin of his daughter, who she knows nothing about. And let's not forget that R2, who is also on the ship was his mate...)

Can't she just be a new character who is strong in the force? That's what Snoke says, there has been an awakening. I thought the way the new film handled Ren being Han and Leia's son was good, believable. But that's enough.

I loved it.

there were some similar star wars tropes or themes about a droid with information, a cantina (i'm guessing there are many), force users killing people or choking them for info etc. Kylo is Darth's grandson. I'm glad he was wanting to own the things his grandfather owned to channel that dark side. That slotted in nicely. Star wars wasn't a wholly original film. It borrowed from all over the place, now TFA is doing likewise. Rey is excellent. Her cute face, her independence, her jedi traits, her familiarity with machinery - who does that remind you of (although shes scavenged for most of her life through huge ships)

Finn and Rey fighting with a lightsaber. Many are getting their knickers in a twist. A lightsaber is just a weapon. A laser sword. Han used one, General Grevious wielded many. Rey used a staff, Finn, I would imagine had combat training with those riot control guns, so both had the back story to be able to swing a laser sword around. Finn gets slapped around and Rey holds the lightsaber just how she sees Finn holding it. But with better combat survival can at least fend an injured Kylo off.

I liked the new death star planet thing that sucked the energy out of a nearby sun and channelled it to destroy the **** out of rebellious planets. The death star 1 had one hit, the death star 2 - no hits, and death star 3 - a system. Clearly blowing up planets is their thing. I loved the design of it, brilliant. Snoke is pulling the strings, and probably has bigger plans than death stars etc. Is the first order just cover or a ploy whilst he resurrects the dark side. Is he going down the sith route of the rule of 2 or something else.

The Han moment. For me, without a big character death the terror of Kylo Ren never happens. If the main characters cant die, then the threats are not real. I was kind of hoping Finn got killed too, or chopped up at least. The dialogue seems to suggest that Han wasn't a particularly good father to Ben. And Kylo struggling with the lure of the light towards the lure of the dark was excellent with Han's hands on his lightsaber. The conflict in Kylo was ended when he killed Han. And lets face it, Han needed a good end, what with Harrison's propensity to almost kill himself in his planes. What better way to go? if Harrison dies or becomes old & infirm between now and 2017 and we had to have him die CGI or off screen. This is the best way. Han was always a scoundrel, a smuggler.. its what he knew. When he walked across that walkway, he knew it was walk back with Kylo or die. No parting of the ways amicably when Han is there to blow it up.

The humour of the film was charming and not prequel-esque slapstick. The monsters on Han's freighter were hilariously evil and chaotic at the same time. Chewie was brilliant. When he got shot and cowered like a puppy... oh my goodness. I couldn't stop laughing. And the first aider saying how brave he was.. hahaha... chewie has given so many brilliant pieces of humour over the 4 films.

Phasma has cashed in on the fett fanboys and got the fangirls flailing. Just a shiny suit, captain of the stormtrooper fleet. The first order may well be the start of something.. i reckon in episode 8 we'll see a more robust and nastier outfit with Phasma all the wiser.

Rating? Its star wars and I loved it. I saw it twice yesterday and will probably go many more times. Its sad to see people wanting to rip holes in a good fun movie. Ive seen people complain about the nods, to the cgi, to the planet splitting up... people.. its a fantasy space film for the family. Its make believe. Chill out, have fun.. enjoy it.

I spent most of the morning not being sure if I enjoyed it. Of course I enjoyed watching the Star Wars universe (visually amazing and totally '77-'83 style Star Wars), but I think parts of the story really bothered me.

Rey was great as was Fin - humanising the stormtroopers was great. The visuals on jakku(?) and inside the Star Destroyer were brilliant. Poe was cool - hopefully we see a lot more of him and Fin in Ep8.

Seeing the Millenium Falcon bought a lump to my throat, and when Chewie got shot I audibly gasped (apparently). The X-Wings were great, and the battles were terrific.

However, some parts of the story didn't add up for me:

Why another death star? What next? An even bigger planet weapon? Was it even needed for the story? I don't think it really was, and the story could have motored on quite nicely without it!

I'd spent the last 30 years assuming Han and Leia had their happy ending. I actually feel more disgruntled and sad about this than Han dying (although what better start to Christmas than seeing your childhood hero killed!).

It felt very much like a reboot (almost a remake) of Ep4, rather than Ep7 - but regardless, it definitely wipes the slate clean after the prequel trilogy farce. Roll on Ep8, although Rogue One is the one I'm really anticipating now!

I was overwhelmed on the first showing. Had a few issues that seem to be consistent with other posts.

Watched again and loved it. Much better in 2D.

Rey was fantastic.

Just seen it in IMAX 3D, even though I loved it, the action was hard to follow in some scenes.
Does 2D make it a little easier to follow/watch? I was going to see it in regular 3D the second time. Is 2D a better option?

Definitely. I haven't seen it in Imax yet but I have watched the 2D and 3D. Go and see the 2D, the 3D doesn't add anything really but its a bit easier to watch, don't go down too close to the screen either. Go up the back a bit and the fast action may be a bit easier on the eyes. :D

as kids we did think a princess and a scoundrel had their happy ending.

as adults we all know those two could not live together. Leia headstrong and important to the rebellion, and Han, itchy feet and a charmer (I bet he cheated on her). Never going to work.. but I bet they had great fun for a few years.

If anyone is going to see it in 3D make sure your provided 3D glasses work before it starts. I knew something was up when "lucasfilm" came on screen, looked weird. It was completely unwatchable when the scroll came up. I was seated in middle of a row and had to go out disturbing the others in the row to find working glasses outside the cinema. Missed the scroll and a bit of the start :x .
Shame the 20th Century Fox fanfare is no more, i take it in future TV screenings and DVD releases of all SW films they will replace it with a Disney logo??

I felt is was a lot better in 2D.

There is flicker caused in the rate of frames. Especially when ships where flying through space.

That happened to us - we realised they weren't working when the ads were in though so swapped them to the correct type

I was going to go see a third viewing tonight in 3D as the first two I saw were in 2D but I'm not sure now after reading the last few posts.

A would love to know how Maz Kanata acquired Luke's lightsaber, look forward to finding out in future films hopefully.

Full soundtrack now out on youtube...

I recommend Rey's Theme for a listen, seems like many are saying this is the standout.

Just got back from watching it a second time. Still very happy with it overall. I think I could edit out the few bits I don't like (par secs joke, ground splitting between Ren and Ray, Ren's indecision before killing Han) and still be left with a great film, which is not possible with any of the prequels IMO. Can't wait for the next one :)

Overall, I thought it was very good.

It could never be the OT (and I never hoped it would), and it bore no comparison to the PT. The lack of CGI, the really good cast/acting, the lived in feel to the universe were all good signs for me and I loved the brutality of the First Order as well - this is no longer George Lucas' film for 13 year olds. It was clearly a rehash of SW, the similarities are obvious, but it was a good way of bringing the characters and ideas we're all familiar with up to date, without making it too alien and different, and still introducing a ton of new characters and content. Like others have said I was a bit disappointed Han and Leia didn't live happily ever after (like they would in a Disney film), and the failure of the Jedi academy, but that just contributes to some of the gritty realism of the new universe.

The film ran long but I thought there were a few characters who were badly under-utilised like Phasma, Max Von Sydows character and Maz although they can probably flesh some of that out next time. JJ was on a hiding to nothing with this film, but the majority of people seem to have really enjoyed it and it bodes very well for the future.

Really impressed some of you guys have seen it 2 or 3 times already!!
