Suggestions for making the sales section safer

OK cool, trusted seller rank seems like a popular idea for a start. Anybody fancy putting a list together!?

Maybe this is the wrong thread to this but what about a list with bad sellers, there is so many bad sellers on ebay and maybe also on other forums. I do not think many of us know them all. A list could be great and why they are bad and maybe who thinks they are bad.

Yeah if at all this needs to be for members that no one has dealt with before, rather than post-count.
Obviously people need to STOP SENDING MONEY BY ****ING GIFT! That would put a complete and permanent stop to it all.
Never a truer word spoken.

I think a lot of it is down to common sense. Todd is right - people do tend to jump in a bit quickly without checking seller history (if they have any).

I also don't think post count is of any use - you either get people making useless comments just to bump up your thread count or you miss out on those genuinely looking to sell but not wanting to be part of the forum

We have a separate section fro feedback - best thing to do is check that first. As others have said - never send a gift payment to a newbie (and for that matter to anyone that doesn't have bloody good feedback)

To be honest the people that have screwed me over on the boards (here & RS) have all been forum members for over a year and I have also dealt with some really good one-post wonders so I wouldn't like to see too much change to stop these guys from selling

How about a default template when you post in the sale section?

just identifying rules for buyer and sellers like:

Do not use paypal payments unless you accept the risk of fraud and chargeback (this applies to gift AND goods
psyments)

Ask the seller for full address and contact number (make sure the number works)

A new seller may be prepared to post first to a trusted member

If you have any doubt ask them to complete the transaction on ebay, this way ebay protect you from fraud and chargeback claims.

The way I see it is that new sellers or people with big collections should not be tarred with the same brush as others.

In my opinion you should make the new sellers pay the fees until they have accumulated at least 5 perfect transactions and this should be noted in the feedback section on our forum.

Whether they factor it into their price or not it eliminates the problem of paying via GIFT and it also means that buyers are protected.

So basically... Seller pays the fees until they have built a reputation good enough. Whether it be 5 or 10 or 25... The forum cab decide.

Hope this makes sense. It did to me!

New sellers or posters shouldn't be allowed to literally just join up and then start selling. That's what Craig's list and EBay is for. Just a suggestion. 8)

To sell on ebay with zero feedback you have to offer paypal as a payment option and you have to register your personnel details to setup an ebay account in the first place.

Ask yourself, who are we protecting ourselves against?

long term members...NO
newbies with "I've just found this up my loft"...YES

Post counts sort of work because they put some new members off, maybe we should run a criminal check on new members? (only joking!)

Bingo!!!

How about a HOLDING ACCOUNT? New sellers can list stuff in the sells thread, the buyer's money is transferred to a HOLDING ACCOUNT, the seller ships the good. The buyer receives the goods, contacts the HOLDING ACCOUNT admin and the funds are release.

Just an idea?

Obviously there could be a minimum amount set, ie transactions have to be over £25. The admin could charge the seller commission say 2% of the sales value (still a lot cheaper then ebay), the funds could be used to host the site and future compo's!

Lars, you need to check the forum more thoroughly!!
Bad sellers section: http://www.starwarsforum.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=24
ebay cocks is also in that section

Site supporters tag, everyone who wants to sell/buy has to have one, cost would either be 5-10 pounds which would go to running the site. it would put off any nob heads that just wanted to come on and rip people off.

As a newbie myself, would I rip people off, no, would I post to someone without payment first, No.

That makes sense to me Bram, good idea.

I like the idea of providing verifiable contact details as well.

As for paying by GIFT PAYMENTS, Pete, Iain and others, them I'm guilty  and extremely lucky the guy posted my item before we outed him. Anyway its a mistake I'll never repeat.

As a Pete and Todd have said the only real measure we need is common sense - holding accounts, fees etc will put off new sellers but they'll also put off lots of other people - might as well use eBay

I say carry on as we are but don't blindly send unrecoverable cash to complete strangers

A good trick is to ask for their eBay details and then pm that way to check they are who they say they are. eBay feedback is a fairly good guide, if they have it

Thanks Jørn, but I do not see a list there ? Maybe I am blind :?

I mean a list that could look like this

1. Solodenmark (Jørn did never get his moc from him or a refund).
2. timthebad (Brian received a custom moc, was sold as vintage moc).

etc. etc.

Then people could copy the list and add some new bad sellers all the time. Then the list would always be updated.

Personally I think the current system works just fine.

As Todd an others have said, you just need to enter into a deal especially with a new poster, with your eyes wide open. And jumping in feet first on a VCJ some one just found in the loft is probably not the way to go.

You pays your money you takes your chances.

Blaggers and con artists will always find a way around the system. Not mater how many safe guards you put in place.

Um ..don't buy from people with (A) no seller reputation or (B) a low post count. I've been up front with new people and said I won't sell them things on here. That's a bit different, but you know, same trust issues.

We all know the good guys on here 8) Don't see what can be put in place other than the normal common sense guidelines. It's always worth a review and a bit of a reminder.

I personelly think that the ' posting out before payment ' is an excellent idea. Let's face it, quite a few peeps on here do it anyhows and if we implement paying the p+p costs as a deposit then full payment of item when item arrives maybe? I know it may not work with new sellers not knowing anyone and posting out to strangers but tough **** if they want the custom they can get to know us on here 1st or lump it!!!

Posting first is never going to work. Not paying via gift is the only way. Perhaps with newbies there should be a terms of conditions that they are aware of before their account is activated?
