Spammers

just thought i'd make a quick post about the spammers.

these are not real people, they are programs people write to just crawl the web and spam any forum they can find.

the reason so many sign up and dont say anything is because i have now enabled account activation, which means when somebody joins i have to "approve" their membership. this means that until i approve them, their name will show up as a new member, but they cant post.

unfortunately, i have no way of knowing who is a genuine member or not, so unless their name is something like "big_cocks_on_ebay" then i just approve them, hoping it's a real person.

unfortunately there's not much more i can do, so i'll just get me and dom to try and delte any annoying posts. and if new memebers don't post within a month, i will delete them or something.

No probs Ed, we know there's only so much you can do.

I guess this also means any new members will have to post inside their first month or be deleted.

What about all the current members who don't/haven't posted or spammed? Will they be deleted as well or do they escape?

to be honest im not 100% sure about deleting unused accounts, as 1) it's not fair on those who look but dont post, and 2) it looks better having lots of memebers even if 5 of us actually post :lol:

if only there was a "delete spammers but keep memebers who don't post" button in the admin conrol panel

I guess then you just gotta wait until someone spams and then delete their account.

Surely though a spam account would be set up and spammed from straight away? Or do they leave them idle for a while then spam?

I'm pretty far from an expert on this, someone must have more knowledge about it than me!

Looking at the recent new member list and their posts, I don't think the new system is working !! :wink:

Gotta agree, signed on and found two more spammers have hit us. But, in Ed's defence what more can he do?

I'm not sure what info he gets from new members. :?

If he get's their e-mail address maybe only accept ones that end in .co.uk :lol: ?!!

Any overseas collectors can only join by invitation from one of us !! :wink:

Then once they make their first genuine SW post they get their money back !!

I support a team from over here too, but they are SHITE (think conference standard but a bit worse!) anyway, as I said, Liverpool probably are my closest team (between them, Carlisle, Blackpool, Tranmere and that wee club who play in blue)
