With the new photo of the Stormtrooper helmet from Ep 7, why the heck are troopers in the film at all? Im old school OT and dont go into the EU but why are we seeing them again when the Empire was eradicated from existence?? Wouldnt it have made more sense to come up with a new enemy?

I was hoping and praying JJ would convince me to become interested in the new trilogy, but this has made me even more afraid that its gonna be shite.

Where you getting the bit about the Empire being eradicated? Not even the EU suggests that.
Yes Palpatine and Tarkin, Vader too if you class him as Imperial, are dead but there were plenty of other Moffs and admirals who survived or were not involved in the final battle of Endor.

After the death of Palpatine and the collapse of the Empire, the empire became known as the imperial remnant, the empire remained as a threat and existed in the outer rim
So the troopers would still be alive and kicking!

Big question marks here. As the EU is being ignored anything can happen.

If this stormtrooper is real you can speculate that the Empire still exists in some form. This raises its own questions. Who is running it? a new emperor? The old Emperor????? Are the Empire still running the Galaxy or is there a New Republic/ Imperial divide? Or is the Empire gone with a new faction whose troopers have armour similar to the imperial Stormtroopers.

Until we see the film or a trailer or at least a get a synopsis it's all going to be speculation.

Agreed but can I just correct you slightly- the EU is not being ignored. Over time the best, and the parts that work, from the EU will be integrated. I'm assuming stories like the old republic and plagieus. Probably Kenobi too.

Agreed, Plagueis should be and probably will be reintegrated as will much of what happened before ROTS. IMO

However when I say EU in this instance I really mean post Jedi EU. I get the feeling that Ep7 will be veering so far away from the post Jedi EU that very little will come back in as cannon.

Other than lifting characters and situations it would be impossible to retcon complete stories. For example if Luke has not started a new Jedi order by Ep7 a lot of stories will remain legends.

After a conflict, a defeated/vanquished conflictee doesnt necessarily disband and all soldiers from that conflict retire and no longer operate as soldiers.

It was a Palpatine controlled dictatorship the rebellion was opposing, not an aggressive takeover by Organa & Mothma. So, maybe Han Solo and Leia are representatives of a Galactic Union, flying around in a star destroyer with their band of stormies fighting wars for the side of good. There will always be some kind of police force or military.
