Smashed iPad

Hi Chaps,

Whilst getting out of the car yesterday I had my iPad in my hand. It normally lives in one of those slip type cases and I had a few bits to carry. I picked it up the wrong way up and as I was locking the car it came shooting out of the case like a torpedo and hit the deck corner first smashing that part of the screen to a million tiny pieces.

It still works, although not as well as it did. I think it might be covered on the contents insurance and will find out with barclays later, but does anyone know how much this might affect next years premium. I believe apple swap these things for refurbs for a fee but I can't seem to find it in pounds, or has anyone had any luck with an aftermarket repair. Im a bit dubious about this last one as the chassis has a dent in it now as well.

Its an iPad 3 by the way.

Thanks

I find it's always it's always worth asking your insurance company that question before you claim.

Then you can weigh up your options.

1-pay for the repair yourself
2-inurance access + next years premium increase

Don't claim on insurance. Most have an excess of around £50 anyway then your premium will increase (10-15% I believe). A shop around the corner from me replaces the screens for £65. Not sure about the store price but I exchanged a water damaged iPod last year and got about £40 off the price of new.

I broke an iPhone I had once and I was going to clam on an insurance that was on it at the time but I got talked into fixing it myself by a friend, once you have done it once its a bit of cake.
I found this site is one of the best for helpful hint and guides on how to fix stuff
http://www.ifixit.com/
I have now brought a few broken Apple products of ebay and repaired them myself.

Cheers guys.

The home contents insurers are bastards. £100 excess and I will lose some of, possibly all of our no claims which is 40%. They will try to fix it first as well, and not with genuine apple parts. I have chickened out of the self repair and I'm going to take it back to apple. They will swap it for a reconditioned one of identical spec for £249.

Not ideal.
