Anyone ever read this?
I'm about half way through it and **** me it's crap!
There are just so many people and places with random/unpronouncable names and the story is on such a huge scale it's almost impssible to follow.
It's supposed to get better as you get towards the end. :?
Anyone read it, is it worth sticking with?

Started reading it but gave up as it was too much like hard work rather than entertainment. It's like reading a history textbook.

Tolkien, Lord of the rings.
It's more about the first age of middle earth, before the LOTR's.

About 20 chapters in now, the first 12 or so are basically impenetrable, but after that it gets better.
Still not even close to LOTR or The Hobbit.

Yeah definately.
I read them in order and I thought they got weaker as they went on.
Not saying the last two weren't great books, just that the first ones were better. All great books, well worth a read.

read the first 2 chapters and gave up. read hobbit and lotr and thought they were excellent. cant wait for the hobbit film

Finished it last night, the first 12 or so chapters are pretty incomprehensible, but the ones towards the end are better.
In ther version I bought, there are two sections; one on the rings of power and the other and the destruction of Numenor, they are easy enough to read although it can be a bit hard as there are so many names and places.

You hear Peter Jackson had a falling out with the film studio (Newline?) and they have decided that he isn't going to be allowed to direct the Hobbit.
I just hope they haven't shot themselves in the foot with that decision!

There is "Unfinished Tales" which isn't bad. It gives you a bit more background into parts of LOTR's. It's definately a hell of a lot easier to read than the Silmarillian!
