Selling up tips.

Hey fellas,

Won't bore you all with the details but I've decided to sell up and quit collecting for the foreseeable future. Nothing bad just need a change and a few less distractions, money could be better used elsewhere and a need to focus on family life. Unfortunately I'm one of those people that gets distracted easily, regularly find myself searching sales forums when I should be working and as I work from home it's just too easy to do.

My question is, since I first started collecting ebay has changed a **** load and not for the best, I've only ever had one bad experience selling but reading a lot of negative stuff in recent years has made me nervous about getting scammed. I will obviously put everything up on here first but being located in Australia makes it difficult at time due to the expense of postage. I don't just want to sell to OZ as the rest of the world is a far bigger market but I'm **** scared of getting duped. Any advice, or am I just getting worried over nothing?

Whilst most of my carded figures are opened I still have a few sealed examples and some nice rarer pieces so I'm going to make a list of everything and try to value them all with reasonable prices. There will be a few pieces I will keep, especially stuff that has been gifts but on a whole I need the vast majority to go. Sad day but I'm at peace with the decision and I certainly won't be a stranger on here and will still pop in from time to time to shoot the breeze with you lot.

Anywho next step is to get it all photographed and make a sales listing ( I dread selling stuff ) so I'll be busy with that for roughly the next week and I'll probably start with the vehicles and play sets.

Use mousedroid for local sales? Cover your collection with bed sheets & the stuff you miss seeing over the next few days/weeks don't sell. I personally love your 'carded' collection on a budget & would be keeping those. (especially the foreign stuff)

Always use registered post when selling & you should be covered.

I've been looking at the opened cards wondering if they would even be worth much, I sold a loose yoda with his cardback on ebay a week ago for a measly $10 which sucks as I've seen loose yoda's sell by themselves for $30 and upwards. Can't work out ebay at all. Considering the work I put into finding them ( believe me it's actually not that easy to find an opened card in a condition worth displaying ) I'd hate to sell them for less than a loose example, so you may be right.

As I said I'll start with the vehicles and playsets first, I'll have a look at mousedroid but I think my membership has been cancelled as I didn't log on for some time.

Unfortunately that's just how stupid most people on eBay are, they'll also pay more for a loose Yoda in an acrylic case than a carded one :roll:

Edd is right - I think it sometimes comes down to people's ideas on what they want to collect. Those who want loose figures will by loose and and those who want carded figures want them to be as perfect as possible.. Your collection falls between the two stools - mint figures in imperfect packaging

It's a shame that you want to sell up Ryan - I think you have put together a great looking collection at a fraction of the cost of a full sealed one - I hope that we'll see you back on the boards after you have sold up

Ryan you have no idea just how gut wrenched I am waking up to read this post m8, makes me feel like turning over & going rite back to seep, there are a lot of great members on this board but there are a handful I fell I really connect with & I regard you as being high on the list of that handful, so I for one will be devastated to see you backing away from the hobby my friend, your collection has inspired me in many ways & has made me re asses the way I look at re sealed carded figures.

I for one hope that you will re consider your decision or at bear minimum just reduce your collection to a more narrow focus & stick with it & with the community.

If there is ANYTHING I can do to help no matter how large or how small I would be honoured to help, so please do not hesitate to ask.

I am also going to be a bit mercenary & drop you a pM with a couple of wants should you decide that you are going to let it all go, but whatever you do m8 know you have friends on this board & please don't be a stranger.

It's a shame you are dropping out, but I understand that lifes needs come first. The bug will probably come back at sometime. As far as your opened collection of carded figures go....I am one of those people who buy these types of things and know their values. Be rest assured they would go to a loving home and If you ever decided you wanted them back...I would be more than happy to make that happen.

Sad news Ryan but everyone on here can appreciate that family live does and will always come first.

I'll always be interested in any moc's so don't worry about selling them. I've posted all over the world and as long as you use registered post then there won't be a problem.

Ive got one tip to give mate,just think VERY carefully about this and make sure it isnt a knee jerk reaction.You may well regret it in the long term.Just take a break,spend more time doing what you want to do with family etc,and then have some SW time when you want it.

ive done this before mate,and regretted it ever since.

Cheers fellas, I really appreciate the kind words but it's all good just need a break and I promise I won't be a stranger. Just need to re-focus and selling up at the moment is what I feel I need to do. I've been thinking about it for a little while and I have put some thought into it but certain events in our life like a second child and a new house amongst other things pretty quickly made me realise that my spare time and funds could be better spent.

I love getting on these boards and the folk I've met over the past year and a bit are an outstanding bunch, sounds stupid but I kinda think of you fella's as my work mates because I've always got this forum logged on in the back ground and working from home it gives me someone to yack to outside of the family unit while I'm working.

It's hard to explain but I feel it's whats best for me at this moment but I'll take on board everyone's advise and of course if possible I'd prefer to sell to members on here. I know I want to keep at least one part of the collection whether it be the loose set, just the first 12 or the opened cards set I've not yet decided, but in any case I know selling them with the knowledge they may be going to some of you guys will make it easier.

Anyway as I said I will still be around I don't make a habit of cutting off people I consider mates and I've certainly made some great one's on here, we're a misunderstood bunch of adult toy addicts who else can I talk toys to and still be taken seriously :lol:

Never nice to see a collector selling but, there are more important things in life, and I know what it feels like when you lose the bug or get your priorities re-arranged.

Best bet is to think long and hard about it and if you're still for selling, start with the bits that are easiest to replace. That way if you change your mind you can re-assemble the collection fairly easily. If once they are gone you're still happy enough to sell, flog the rest.
At the end of the day nothing is irreplaceable, bar possibly any toys you have kept from childhood and even they only really have sentimental value. If you can better spend the money and time elsewhere then go for it. SW collecting isn't the be all and end all.

But do still drop by and say hello.

It's obviously difficult to give advice without knowing exactly how much you have tied up in your collection, but by the sounds of the items you're asking advice for, I can't imagine selling a few $10ish figures will make that much of a difference to everyday life? If you like them why not keep them and just chill out a bit (or completely) on the buying front for a while, maybe you'll start again when you have less on.

Some guys on here have enough tied up in their collection to buy a new car or a house deposit or something, so I can understand the desire in those cases. But like me you seem to have a small collection right now, so perhaps selling won't even be that productive (especially if you are making a loss.)

Ensure you keep hold of ur favourite peices mate or you will regret it.
and there is no reason why you can't stay on the boards.
i dont buy much because i lost my job a couple of months ago and im struggling to find another at the mo,but it does'nt stop me from visiting. My interest in the hobby is just as strong i just cant purchase at the mo.

Don't rush into a decision mate, take your time and consider it before taking the plunge. If you do decide to sell, just sell half a dozen bits off and see how you feel- it might be suprisigly liberating, or it might be horrific.
It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway :lol: if I can be of any help dude let me know.
