According to the BBC he's just died. As a kid growing up in the 80s (when there were no more moon missions) this guy was someone to look up too. I had to do a project the last year of primary school and obviously my topic was space and it was all about the space race and so on, so I was always in awe of him. RIP Neil!

And if you can fit into a lyric by Shaun Ryder, then you truly have entered the public consciousness!

Imagine that sense of dread he must of had leaving the atmosphere after having a scary take off, into the nothing.

BALLS OF STEAL!

I wish more people like him and Ernst Shacklton etc were promoted instead of the Simon Cowells, Alan Sugars, Jeremy Clarksons and John Terrys of this world.

What an awesome, awesome guy.

Agreed :(

Very sad about this, a real hero of mine. Not many true heroes left on this planet. I wonder if without the likes of him, would there have even been Star Wars? :(

His family released a statement saying:

"The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Hugely fitting I think, plus its a bit depressing to think that it will soon be 50 years since that event and no one appears to have the appetite to take on these challenges any more.
