So can Palitoy cardbacks...........
Crikey. Already up to £74 with four days to go before auction ends... I'll be watching this one, just out of interest

Yeah that price is way out of the norm........but then again things have been changing lately price wise.

Up to £76 and it's just the card back FFS!! I remember only 2 years ago you could buy almost any Palitoy reseal (figure, bubble and cardback) for less than that.

Looks like those days are gone Paul, for now at least. Just a thought: as I'm new to SW collecting, what was it like price-wise for vintage on the run up to the release of Episode I in 1999? Could you see prices increase then fall back down again after the poor reception of the film?

If so, do you (or anybody else who's been collecting for years... Todd?) think a similar thing will happen if Episode VII doesn't live up to fans expectations?

I have to admit, as soon as I got back into collecting in May after a 30-odd year hiatus, immediate panic set in as I could see prices rising... but as I'm in this for the long haul, I've calmed down a little and learnt to sit things out and wait for the right piece to come along at the right price... fingers crossed I'm thinking along the right lines :?

The big hit for me was when the Heir to the empire trilogy books took off in the early 90's. Prices shot through the roof.

In 99 I started hitting shows and prices on some things weren't too different to today. VC jawa was £250

In a lot of areas though things have got far higher and others far lower. The sheer availability of stuff now has made many pieces that were high end back in 99 much cheaper now. Things like the A wing and Skiff were really pricey back in early 2000's. Now they can be had for half the price.

But Palitoy ESB figures back then were cheap. Even 30 backs were going for under £200. Sometimes even less. (there's a really painful auction in 99 that is hard for many a Palitoy collector to think about :? )

Now the price is 4-5 times that even for the more common ones.

I think the film will have an effect, but what items will be affect will depend on what people are going for.

I guess so many are going down the carded root (and Palitoy is on a huge roll at the moment) that the prices are going up and more people are not wanting to spend that much and are happy with cardback...of course that then puts more pressure on cardbacks!

That's fascinating to hear, mate- I've got admit, I left the Star Wars universe in the early '80s... so I've no idea about the Heir to the Empire trilogy- but to hear that a series of books shot the prices up back when there must have been a lull in all things Star Wars is a real insight.

As for the future, I understand what you're saying. I guess the old adage "If we all owned a crystal ball..." comes into play, here!

But this "painful auction back in '99", I have no idea nor heard anything about this. As a Palitoy enthusiast, I would be grateful to hear the story... if it's not too heart-wrenching to recollect, Gary... :?:

My thinking as well Martin. I've bought a few expensive items over the past few months but will now be easing back and finishing my loose collection, plus affordable boxed vehicles and maybe some more cheaper MOCs. I do aim to one day have a complete 12-back MOC run, but it certainly won't be this year or the next (unless there is a real change in my circumstances). The way these auctions are going at the moment looks like desperation on the part of some buyers.

The auction if I remember correctly was in 99. 3 x 30 backs figures sold for £250

They were Fett, White Bespin Guard and Han solo.

Now, the cheapest of those would probably set you back over £1k!

That's good to hear, Rob- glad I'm not the only one! As Edd mentioned in his own thread, it's just cardboard and plastic... the value is only what we as collectors put on it. What I seem to be witnessing at the moment looks like panic buying, "got to have it, no matter what"... as Andy quite rightly pointed out: £76 for a Palitoy Luke Farmboy that has had its bubble well and truly ragged off the card (quite clearly this wasn't one of yours from back in the day, Mr Gowdy)... it really does beggar belief.

Ouch. I see. Somebody got a right old bargain there, then. Crikey.

Yes. Fett would be 5k+ nowadays!!

But back then it wasn't a bargain. It was just what they went for. Prices can be very fickle and ultimately the old saying is true.'' 'something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it!'

I see what you're saying, Gary- 1999 is 14 years ago, it's easy to forget... £250 is still quite a sum for me now, so back then? Even more so. But still, you can't help thinking "what might have been..."

At this point it is a seller market as the fools are coming out of the woodwork. The dust should clear in a couple years and things will calm down. As stated the worth of an item is only what someone is willing to pay and if someone wants to pay hundreds for a beat up cardback..............well then I am gonna make a killing

Seriously...I rarely sell on ebay as it seems everyone is out to put an ass ****in' on you...I sell here as much as possible.

Todd, I knew I could count on you for a fair appraisal of the situation. I'll be knocking on your door regarding any future purchases (along with a 'rat-a-tat-tat' at chazb73 and ItfcIain, et al...)

Budget MOC all the way for me

Question....what ball park is a ROTJ reseal split or damaged fett on card :?:

The prices I've seen are stupid, but then again he is iconic

Some of these mocs with a little tlc are really nice on display and a fraction of the price

Again not sure - not my area really.

Anything 'fett' seems to attract a significant premium. I reckon £80 -£120 (the auctioneers favourite  ).

Yeh what he said. You could stick it on Ebay at £100 but you probably would get offers around £70 - 80. Depends on the damage of course. Some of the pricey reseal/damaged stuff I've been watching is just hanging around. Keep waiting for the sellers to get back to me and give in to my more realistic offers
