I just noticed this R2-D2 which has really dark blue paint on his legs. He also appears to be the 'No COO' variant. But I can't find a picture of an R2 with legs like this. Any ideas?

I'd say a transplanted head Edd.

Easy to do, just unscrew the head from a body, and put it on another one. Some dummy used a dark blue regular R2 body for this....

Thanks Ian, so it is the first 12 dark domed R2 that usually has the darker blue paint on the legs too?

From what I have seen, yes. Best to check with an R2 focus guy like Mike Ritter, but I believe the dark legs belong to early first 12 R2's.

The head on this likely came off a body with a torn/destroyed sticker.

Guys it totally legit. These are Quiet hard to find so don't pull it a part!!!

There are 2 versions of the NO COO sensorscope R2, with originate from different factories. The common one with the COO at either 3 or 9 o'clock next to a leg and this rarer one between the legs.

It is sometimes referred to as a Meccano variant but to date no carded examples have been found.

Your example is worth about £50-£60 in that condition. If your selling it list it quick as I have a spare near mint one I'm going to put up for sale in the next month ;)

Really?! Wow! Thanks Walkie. If anybody here is interested let me know, I'd be happy to trade it for a nice 'normal' R2 Sensorscpe and a couple of other loose figures :)

I'm glad to help, besides the dark blue legs you should also notice the dome has a dull instead of a shiny finish.

If your looking to trade I imagine it wouldn't last long on the variant FB group.

Yes you're right, I assumed the dome was just knackered but it definitely looks like it's always been dull. Here's some more photos:

I was gonna say when I saw the first photo I thought the dome looked weird. Looks kind of like metallic paint rather than shiny chrome. Have seen early dark blue painted ones but never seen one like that.

Thanks walkie, I have offered him up in the variant FB group as suggested. Might as well let him go to somebody that appreciates it rather than get dumped back in my beater box

Love this forum. Just no limit to the knowledge pool of members. That is one to look out for in the future for sure. Great variant and congrats on the find of a fifty quid beater, Edd!

I have one that's looks the same with no COO but with the stamp down the side, is that worth similar money in that condition?

Sadly not, and you would be referring to #3 on the below image.

A 'general' rule of thumb and I mean 'general' is that most figures were produced in 3 different Hong Kong factories at the same time. These can normally be identified by a small (C), large (C) and the 3rd without the "MADE IN" text.

It's easier to see on the updated COO chart for the solid dome R2, found here...

http://swspaceclub.com/wbobafett/coo-guide-3-0/anh/r2-d2/#a

3 x Hong Kong factories...

I - large (C) made in hong kong
III - small (C) made in hong kong, then the tooling was later modified to remove the country text
IV - hong kong (no 'MADE IN' text), and the tooling was later shipped to mexico and used by Lili Ledy

1 x Taiwan factory

II - made in Taiwan

Then you have family V which I would presume is the same HK factory as IV, the newer due is due to new tooling for the R5-D4 figure which somehow the stock got mixed up and used on the R2 as well.

How that helps?

I still a mystery to it's origin. Is this from your childhood set of figure you found Edd? Can you remember what the card back may have been?

No it was in a lot of beaters I bought a few years ago. I checked my carded trilogo and it's just the normal one.
