Prices on 12/ 20 back Palitoy dropping

I'd guess that the much greater availability than say 15 years ago, rather than making the price drop dramatically, has made the prices in the high range that they now command. (when I put my set together in 2002 the vast majority of 12/20 were below the £500 mark.

With more available, I reckon more people are thinking that it's a set they can actually put together, so far more people are trying to put the set together. I was told it was impossible to do back in 2002, not because of demand, but entirely because of availability and that probably put a lot of people off...and as MOC go, back then they were still a lot more expensive than Kenner 12/20.

Now so many more are available of the though 5 (Luke, Chewie, Han, Leia & Ben) that more people are battling it out over them...even the more common ones and so their prices are also very high in relation to their relatively high number in existence ( though not necessarily available for sale)

You've just broken Iain's elasticity of supply/demand theory

Actually though, moving the discussion on slightly to 30 backs, I bet before the Palitoy rep find most collectors didn't consider it worth even trying to actively collect them as they came up for sale pretty infrequently, whereas now you could've easily collected the easier 5/6 within the past 18 months (assuming you've got the funds). So like Gary says, new supply has created new collectors and new demand.

I've kept notes on the prices on eBay for years on both mocs and reseals (12/20 & the first 10 30 backs).

Here's how Vader looks over the years for mocs -

12 Back - Fair condition - 350 GBP Jan 2013
12 Back - Slightly worse condition - 286 GBP Jan 2013
12 Back B - Nice condition - BIN 400 GBP Jan 2014
12 Back B - AFA 85 - BIN 900 GBP Jan 2014
12 Back B - AFA 80 - 1249 GBP April 2014
12 Back B - UKG 80 - 1000 GBP May 2014
12 Back B - Small ding in bubble, crease through centre of card - 455 GBP May 2015
12 Back B - AFA 85 - 2000 GBP Sep 2015
12 Back B - AFA 85 - BIN 2849 GBP March 2016
12 Back A - AFA 80 - 1363 GBP April 2016

Interesting that there's only one A back amongst them (although I didn't note down what the first two were at the time) and shows the difference from year to year but as with everything on eBay it can change from week to week.

Yes Ian, Vader on a 12A card is far less common than on a B :!:

I rem being gutted I turned down the mint 12A Vader that was part of the full set many of my 12 backs came from because I picked up a 12B AFA tri 85 example for nearly £300 less than the asking price of the A
Obviously both Han's not included all my hard 12s were on A cards and my Stormie was also on an A which is v tough too :!:

You just reminded me that I own a fully sealed 12 back Palitoy Vader moc although I've no idea if it's A or B back. I'm thinking it's B due to the saber tip being rounded and not flat (I think), but I'll have to double check it once I get it back out of storage. It does make you wonder what a high grade A back would go for.

I didn't get them all

But Vader over £2k with fees , not even in good nick
Luke near £3 k
Sandpeople £1200
C3PO almost £1k
Wally almost £1k

They have sold a lot cheaper on eBay and they were graded better condition ones . An AFA85 wally sold for £585 last week .

Clearly there must be a 'Vectis Affect' on collectors if things are hitting crazy prices there, but better ones are lower than eBay

Perhaps people are beginning to think that we're coming to the end of the Palitoy stock so it's creating its own bubble as they grab what they can?

Vectis have another Palitoy sale next month iirc, but I think there's a load of AM stuff in it as well as SW so we'll see then if things are going up and not down ...

Yes ,
Seems crazy when you can jump on eBay and buy them cheaper and better quality, also they will have a shock when all the fees and postage are added on
