Come on guys, give him a break. It sounds more like someone who's just really excited about getting into collecting. I think they're genuine questions. If you were starting from square one and maybe hadn't grown up with the toys you wouldn't know about graded vs non-graded or how to treat the figs and you might come to a forum to ask some advice?

He's just trying to show he's reverential to the figs, which is something a lot of new collectors (like me) feel they need to prove when they first get into the community.

Basically this guy has come along with a load of excitement, asked a couple of questions and been told to f*** off.

^ this.
As a new collector, I didn't think it was a entirely daft question either... But I'm new too. Equally I can appreciate how seasoned collectors would find it a little irritating. I collect watches, and am a member on another forum where there is a flame-free zone where noob collectors can ask this kind of thing without antagonising anybody else. Is there something similar here? Just a thought. (Apologies if it already exists!) J

Edit: yep his other posts are troll-ish!

Just when I was enjoying being on this forum and thinking it was a nice place to be with a tight knit group of good guys, you totally ridicule what appears to be an honest (although perhaps a bit misguided) question from a new collector.

Not cool at all.

Ross - read his other posts - we have had two or three troll-like posters turn up on here in the past few days

if they are genuine it pans out usually, strange questions, mother quotes ect....i couldnt give a **** tbh, he takes it and stays or its a troll and he goes.

has the guy even introduced himself at all??

Hi Ross, as you can see from my posts above, I thought it was harsh too, but to be fair to the guys another new poster popped up yesterday saying exactly the same thing: "Hey guys, where can I get some nice repro cards?". So there might be something in it. I'm always happy to give the benefit of the doubt but it's a little strange to get three in a week all saying the same thing.

I disagree with what everyone's saying about the "your mother" quote though. Reading that thread back it comes off like banter to me, nothing more than that.

In my book noone's a c*** until they prove themselves a c*** so lets all be nice!! :D

I think the only person out of line here is the op. Aside from his trolling, his other posts could have easily been answered if he'd done a bit of homework. The first time he asked about preservation both me and Joe gave him straight answers to quite frankly a silly question. To post practically the same question a second time is asking for it.
One of the things I like about this forum is people don't get handled with white gloves. If you **** up or make a dick out of yourself you'll get the piss taken. There's plenty of long term members that have had to go through that initiation ceremony and if you can take it, learn from your mistakes and carry on then you become a valued and respected member.

I'm not sure about that - I took it as a sign that Spoons had called him out

Any new user who's first three posts are about repros, repainting and Toytoni should be ringing alarm bells
wouldn't be surprised if his friend is Toytoni or Mr Orme...

Or your mum!

Considering a couple of posts ago the guy didn't know who Toy Toni was then it was a strange response - others who have been questioned before would surely have been a bit more defensive - and to be fair the OP hasn't really addressed any accusations of being a troll

Completely agree with that and sure that in the past people have been a bit quick to judge - but in this case I don't think they are far off - especially with our other friends all joining the forum at the same time

I can see how it looks like bullying, but I think most people involved have a good idea of whether somebody is genuine or not. Apologies would of course be issued if this turned out to be a genuine new member, but there's no sign of it just yet (eg they haven't contacted any of the mods or made any attempt to defend themselves)

We are all grown ups in the end, and there does have to be a certain amount of thick skinnedness IMO.

I remember when I joined I asked a couple of dumb questions got a bit flamed, but took it on the chin as I genuinely wanted to learn.
I'm not in any way condoning baptisms of fire but you do have to take a Little on the chin in this life, hey we are all human :D

The number of regular users of this forum and long term members is testament in itself.
As the forum is within reason free thinking and a forum for debate and discussion, you can't please all of the people all of the time

You also have to remember that vintage collecting is something that collectors are passionate about, and protecting its future so subjects pertaining to reproduction and reprinting are highly emotive, rightly so in my opinion.
We are but custodians after all

I just went back and looked at all the guy's posts to date. Seems he genuinely is a new collector and is looking for advice on several areas. Can he possibly be a troll? Perhaps. Doesn't appear likely though based on his posts to date, and I think everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt, especially newer collectors. I think back to all I asked about and wasn't sure of initially, and it still makes me laugh. I mean, at one point I asked if U-grading would be a good option for a few MOCs I had picked up that had the POP neatly peeled off!!!!! Was I a troll? No, just a dumb ****ing noob. We all were there, so let's show some compassion and patience instead of being a bunch of unwelcoming and accusatory jerks.

If he's a troll, then I will gladly take the abuse deservedly coming my way. But I don't believe that's the case here.

Didn't have time to post anything up about this member before all of these other replies were posted so I do apologise but just to let you guys know, he has actually now been banned.

When thankyoukener joined SWF he created a number of threads about quite controversial subjects (repaints, recards, AFA..etc) and some of those were even locked (2 in the same day..) however, before they were locked advice was given by moderators and members (advice he probably should have listened to).

I get the newbie thing but IMO if you join a forum and get called a troll because of the questions you are posing and/or have your threads locked then you need to step back and take a different approach...not go on the defensive and insult peoples mothers..or ask the exact same questions you've caused issues with or already had answers on.

While it might seem a knee jerk reaction to ban him for all the idiotic questions to some, we had actually been watching and had also discussed things behind the scenes. Trust me when I say he had more of a chance than most and despite being asked by more than a handful of valued regular members to ban him days ago we didn't until yesterday.

It was pretty clear that if we let him continue he was probably going to upset even more people (people that we value as forum members) and cause arguments/issues with the topics he wanted to talk about.

SWF is a very fair forum and the older members and moderators have a good spidey sense for this kind of thing (something that shouldn't be dismissed as bullying or being unfair, we've seen our fair share of bullshit over the years..) Please know that everyone is welcome here but unfortunately sometimes certain people manage to tick all the boxes on the ban form and there isn't much else we can do but ban to keep the peace.

We don't always get it right but TBH I'd rather risk upsetting one person who has obviously no idea how to integrate themselves on a forum than the hundreds of existing active members that do.

Good post Joe, I think that's fair enough. I can't believe how naive some people are being about this. I don't know what a troll is, thought it was those big ****ers from the Hobbit. But anyway, I'm sure this person is just fishing for a reaction and trying to cause trouble. I'm not offended, I find it funny so I take the piss a little bit. The only way I could see this being genuine is either it's a kid or someone who's a few sandwiches short. If that was the case I'd be the first to apologise. I don't think any reasonably intelligent adult would write these kind of things. Will the paint fall off? Come on.

I joined a lorry drivers forum once. I had done my HGV training and test with a company who's name was mud for various dubious business practices and offering free class one after doing class two but putting a stipulation in that you did an expensive qualification within 6 months, knowing it was virtually impossible. I thought the bloke who taught me how to drive was pretty decent so my first post was how I used these cowboys to pass my test. It was balanced, and I did state that I hadn't paid for any of the training but I got slammed as a troll. Used the same username as I use on this forum and they started calling me Mr Shifty. I was accused of being a plant by the company and it wasn't till I linked my Facebook account on a post and unlocked some of it they started to believe me.

I didn't post anything else on there. Some of them were right cunts.

I may not have a ton of posts here, but I have been around the block for a while, and I think you made a mistake. If it makes long time members here happy, then maybe you don't give a ****, but I feel it's a mistake nonetheless. I am not here to start a fight Joe, but here is the dude's first post, which seems innocent enough to me, where he was looking for sellers in Brighton:

Thankyoukenner said:
Hi guys recently decided to restart completing my collection which I started in 1990 as a 6 year old so as you can imagine need quite a few! Joined this thread to see if there are any sellers in the Brighton or surrounding areas who I can buy from. Have been to snoopers paradise and cosmos but looking for other sellers please?

Here's his second post, which while misguided to a veteran, isn't that bad of a question, and as you know, even folks that have been in the hobby for years have done this (which of course I don't agree with or condone):

Thankyoukenner said:
Hi guys a few of my figures have paint loss or damage. Anyone know a specialist who can repaint them or know a way or guide to doing it myself so they look grand again! Not worried about losing value or originality of them just want them looking fresh again!

Here's his third thread, in which he actually denounces repros - not so bad for a noob:

Thankyoukenner said:
I have a friend who suspects he has some repro figures but doesn't seem fussed! He is wondering if anyone knows a seller who only deals on decent reproduction figures? I've tried to get him into buying genuine figures but he's happy with the knock off rubbish!

And finally, his "your mum" response was to when Andy was attacking him, which really wasn't that bad considering some of the harsh stuff I have heard people that are long term members here saying - here is what Andy said:

I guess my point is that I thought this was a well run forum with a tight knit group of guys, and that's certainly true, but this decision seems very curious to me. Sure I don't know what happened behind the scenes, so maybe I am off base. But in searching for a forum to spend my time since RS has gone downhill, this one leaves a bad taste in my mouth and does seem like a knee jerk reaction.

To be fair Ross, the second post about Brighton was asking about a well known scammer in Brighton. If you were a troll, what issues would you pick. A well known scammer who the op won't name? It smelt off from the get go. Then there were questions about repro cards, how he could get in touch with the guy from Spain etc etc. No real intro. It was as if the guy wanted to start a thread on every controversial subject..........

Ross, just so you know - Toy Toni is from Brighton - and has a booth at Snoopers Paradise

Might all be a co-incidence though
