Nineties time capsule

I came across a box at home the other day that was somehow missed when I put my collection into storage. It's one of about five or six boxes that contains items I bought in the shops in the nineties. People may remember that the period around the Special Edition releases was a fantastic time for new Star Wars products.

The Darth Vader invitation was for the 1990's re-launch event for Star Wars in the U.K at which I was a delegate. The newest item is an unwrapped Phantom Menace chocolate bar - worth a fortune now I'm sure.

I didn't bother so much with the Kenner toys in the 1990s and concentrated on stuff that I thought wouldn't be preserved otherwise, such as food items, boxed mug sets and stationery. It would be nice to see if other people have collected obscure items from the 90s. I'm willing to bet that I didn't manage to find everything.

I'm not feeling the love for 90's collectibles (so much for my unopened crisp packets, untouched R2-D2 and Darth Vader cakes and huge collection of packaged stationery). There was a time when collectors wouldn't have picked up a Helix Death Star pencil sharpener if they saw it in the street – now they're fighting over them.

The 90's Star Wars memorabilia will have its day but it seems like it isn't today.

I was probably thinking the same as you were when this stuff came out. They went OTT on it though and killed it. Star Wars on flipping everything! Without searching the net I would bet there is Star Wars bog roll available somewhere

I'm not aware of any 90's stuff that became seriously collectible.

Consider this - when these items came out, say around 1995-1997, the old Star Wars lines were hugely collectible. That's only just over ten years since the end of production. It's now almost 20 years since a lot of the 90's items came out and they are still almost worthless.

I agree that Star Wars went into overkill in the late 90s. For me it seemed like 1977-78 all over again. The difference was that I had a chance to grab the store displays and disposable items such as food and stationery. Much of it was U.K exclusive too. I'm not that bothered about value to be honest and it's obvious the 90's stuff will never challenge the 70's and 80's collectibles.

Some beautiful items were released in the nineties; one of my favourites being the Burtons biscuit tin, that was just as good as anything released in the past. If you don't own one, you can get an empty one for 99p and you won't regret it in years to come.

I still stand by my point that 90's stuff will become of interest to collectors some day. We'll see the 1990's crisp packet focus – just not for a decade or two yet. If you think that 90's stuff will be perpetually worthless, we can agree to disagree.

Seriously, doesn't anyone have a non-action figure item they are glad that they picked up in the 1990's? Does anything beat the Burton's biscuit tin?

Craig.

The way I look at it is that loads of people thought like that in the 90s and bought stuff to hold onto thinking it would be more valuable in the future. They mostly did it with the toys, but still to a lesser extent with all the other stuff.

Rightly or wrongly I do look at this in terms of value as that does seem to reflect desirability.

The things that might be worth something in the future are not the clocks or socks, but things like shop stands and bus stop posters. Maybe even Bendems  ...I hope so cos i've got frickin loads  But anyway, you know - things that were actually quite difficult to get hold of. It's the same for the vintage stuff. God knows how people got hold of shop displays back then :? Well it's not so much how they got them, but how they had the foresight to pick them up and store them. People like Jason Joiner and so on, collecting this stuff before it had even finished selling in the shops. Can never get my head around it! Good on those blokes though.

You are right. In years to come some of the things could be collectible to the new generation of Star Wars lovers. Time will tell :)

I'm keeping my Episode 1+2 shop displays for the time being

Although I like the idea of uncrating old stuff, this however shows how uncool the 90s were and how awesome vintage stuff is even today. Imagine uncrating the same box with 77-85 stuff ...

I think my favourite bit of '90s guff will always be the Tazo collection from Walkers crisps. I managed to get the whole lot along with the little ring binder display, although I'm reliably informed by my dad that it was either given away (or more likely, binned) some time ago. I shudder to think about how many packets of cheesy Doritos I must've gone through to get hold of that lot...

I think I had all the Tazos

Had very little else from the 90's specifically. Just a couple of ships that I didn't have as vintage, like the skyhopper, Tie fighter and A-wing.

All I have from the 90s is a Theatre Edition Luke Jedi MOC and Darth Maul and a Battle Droid MOC from Ep1 which I picked up during the hype and release of Ep1 :p

I ****in loved those Fantasy Ball lollies with the Bubblegum inside. The also had a sweet sticker too. Are they for sale????

Mumbo collected all the Tazos in the 90's, munching his way through thousands of cheesy Tazos.

I got a complete set plus binder for £2 at a boot sale 2 years ago

My brother used to go into supermarkets open the bottom of a 6 pack of Walkers and they used to fall out of the bottom up to 4 at at time. In the multipacks they were loose inside.
