Hello all,

I'm a total newbie so go easy please... :D

I would really like some advice to get me started if possible? I've started reclaiming all the Star Wars vehicles and figures lost to childhood and am focused on boxed complete vehicles with inserts and instructions plus loose figures at present and would really like some words of wisdom or some do's and don'ts if you like.

What should I be looking out for and what should I avoid? It's a minefield out there and the likes of fleabay can be a real nightmare so I've steered well clear up to now but a few bits have really interested me lately but I've been a bit scared of getting burnt so is there any advice you could give a newbie in his late 30's?

Any advice would be most welcome as up to now I've just dealt with Jamie (fuzzybuzzytoys) who introduced me to this excellent forum and Jon (Chico) who have both been true gents to deal with but fleabay and the like scares me as you just don't really know what you are going to get.

Thank you to everyone in advance.

Nick.

Welcome aboard mate - you have come to the right place

There are some great sellers on here - you have already dealt with two of them - and if you want to pick up quality items then you will find people on here are very honest. The other advantage in buying on here is that you avoid the issue of repro weapons which seem to be rife on eBay.

If you want any advice then post up your question on here and I am sure someone will be able to help

Be warned though - this hobby can get addictive

Welcome Nick.
What Iain has said is bang on.
I'd like to add; Take your time. No seriously, take your time. There is no rush. If you are truly back into this you'll still be here in years to come.
Enjoy it and remember, there are no bone questions, if in doubt ask.
Best of luck,

Many thanks for the warm welcome from both of you.

I'm getting seriously addicted already, I'm already wondering if a drug habbit would be cheaper lol. I must say it's really hard to take your time and use caution as there is always something out there that catches my eye but I totally understand the advice as I've had an itchy trigger finger many a time already.

Can't help but feel completely out of my depth right now though so will be after lots of advice in the future.

Nick and I got talking though eBay didnt we Nick? Hes a top chap with bags and bags of enthusiasm and totally loves vintage.

I know for a fact, and it's not just through me, hes made some very shrude purchases. Nick likes his boxed vehicles and dosent take any prisoners on quality.

Nick, listen to the lads, softly softly catchy monkey. You will learn something new about vintage Star Wars everyday.

Oh and Iain thinks I'm a 'great seller' apparantly

Erm... Nick, I'm not sure what you have been advised before but this is the worst "DRUG HABIT" of them all... I am literally a few people's pimp at the moment!!

Best advice has been given, take your time and focus on a specific objective... I didn't and ended up with all manner of items.

Live within your budget as sooner or later the item will turn up again and again, remember these are childhood memories but also plastic and card toys.

Ask advice, there are soooo many experienced collectors on here and in time you will know who to ask what, but for now make a general enquiry or ask the guys you know.

Good luck and may the force be with you...

P.S Always buy my stuff!!

Nick,

It does harm to do a little swotting up on repro weapons, this place is useful...

But as many above have already send, buying through the forums is usually the best way to build up your collection.

Be warned before you know it you be dreaming about star wars toys!!!

Yep got talking to Jamie through eBay when I finally tipped my toe into the great sea of collecting, I had been window shopping for some time before I finally went for it and fortunately I met a really great bloke who sold me some beauties it has to be said and it's snowballed from there.

Boxed complete vehicles are my passion and I've made one mistake recently which I don't want to own up to right now as it's still painful but Jamie is right I really do focus on quality and want good examples, they have to have inserts, instructions, be complete and have boxes that are stiff and display well. I would like good examples of them all eventually (I don't want much do I) so will focus on these and loose figures right now.

It would seem the consensous of opinion seems to be to take my time so it's time to take a deep breath and calm down...unless any of you have some examples I might be interested in?

You are not wrong! Seriously since I started I think my productivity at work has taken a sharp nose dive (no doubt helped by my impending redundancy at the end of this month) and I spend far too much time trawling for vehicles and reading through this forum to try and pick up on some tips for collecting.

Many thanks for the advice and I will calm down and bide my time waiting for the right ones to come along and stop diving in like a mad man.

Those enquiries will come thick and fast as it's a steap learning curve, it's been eased by the reassurance of everyone on here though and it seems I'm in the right place to learn.

Bram is one of my crack dealer definitely but well said.

It is a great hobby period.

But it costs money, gives a great buzz...and yes there is a comedown and you soon start planning the next hit.

I started just 3 months back but have spent some serious money and had a great time but am experiencing sort of a burn out. My advise is enjoy it rather get into a completionist (if that's even a word) mentality. I am learning to slow down and maybe go cold turkey for a few weeks

And yes buy on SWFUK rather than ebay etc

If you want to collect modern i have loads for sale ...real cheap 8)

Welcome aboard the good ship SWFUK :)
