New Members??

there must be, these new members are joining and posting spam links, you guys dont see them until they are approved, at least 30 users ive deleted now.

im sure you can tighten up joining so the mods get a new user request, and you can just reject it.

ill pm edd

75 accounts created today, ive been checking every few minutes and new accounts have been added ot somone is logged in with a crappy russian username lol i think we need to addanother mod who is online regularly, im dreading the mess when i get home from work....

It's a difficult balance between tightening up registering and putting off new genuine members. Email requests will work if the response is quick. Maybe the Russian guy will get bored. As an idea why don't we stop allowing them to add web links? There's a thread for that. Must of these accounts have web addresses assigned.

it might help forcing them to fill in more details, rather than username/password and registering, they obviously have a bot or script to create accounts.

usually enter a hash key when registering, the funny jumbled letters, or register an email address and confirm it via a link stops them pumping out one account after the other.

either of those would put them off.

at least their posts dont get shown to general users.

Sorry for the hassle and thanks to Joe and Andy for holding the fort. The ****ers are using unique IP addresses so there's no way of stopping them, for now I have just disabled new registrations altogether. Hopefully they get the message and go somewhere else. I've deleted all the accounts.

Great work Edd! Hopefully that will deter the ****ers!

Just out of interest when are you going to reopen new registrations as I would hate to miss out on any legit members :)

I'll give it a couple of days and see if they've given up. Unregistered people can still see the main forum.

I would suggest you strenghten the registration process to keep them out.
Like have an verification link send to an excisting email adres and also have an email check so they cant use the Same email adress for another username.

If you make the registration a bit more hassle, i am sure these goons Will give up.

There is already email verification and a star wars related question to answer to weed out bots, so it's about as secure as it can be without requiring admin verification. I could do that but would rather not unless I have to. Will see how it goes.

I've re-enabled registrations with a different question, so let's see how it goes. If the bastards still keep trying I'll just have to enable admin verification.

Thanks for joining again and apologies for the deletion! I do a cull of members that don't post anything every year or so, so even if you just want to lurk it's worth making a couple of posts.
