I see your point, who knows what sort of shape it was in before customisation. I have no issue with people customising their own items, my point was it's not my cup of tea personally. I just didn't like the paint job! Even though it must have taken a fair bit of effort.

This is exactly what this forum is all about, IMO

Debate, differing opinions, expert knowledge, this all gives an opportunity to digest the information and make an informed decision.

I don't think anyone on here would take mocs, mintys or anything and customise.

As Todd pointed out, beaters etc are fine, and some custom work that is done is awesome :D

BTW I have a lando general no cloak or weapons but missing a thumb....( I didn't notice when I picked him up for £4  ) yours if you want him Todd :D

Sure....I could make him a new thumb...or rip off the other one to level it off.

I think it looks alright.
I've never really had an issue with customising or modifying used vintage toys. As long as they were beaters to start with. I think we can sometimes be a little over precious with our protection of vintage.
Ugrading is destroying packaged toys that can never be repackaged. This is entirely different and really nothing to get too excited about.

Yes...it's a custom...that is all. Nobody is destroying mint items to use for customs. This is not even the same thing as ripping open carded or sealed items.

So am i going against the grain by repainting a perfectly displayable, good conditiin Speeder? Weasel has this for sale for ages at £20 and i decided to go for it and see what i could do about a Snowspeeder prop:

Everyone does what they won't with there items which is fine, but don't expect everyone to agree with what ever you do to them. For me personally painting an AT-AT is up there with U grading as a big no no, but then U grading doesn't bother me as much as it bothers some collector's. As I said before the AT-AT on here just looks like a new one so what's the point anyway?

I'm another one who sees nothing wrong with customs. There's enough loose for everyone and their gran for most items.

No different to giving toys to the next generation of kids to play with. Keeps the interest up but there are casualties...And much cheaper than buying modern

I find it interesting how the different vintage groups value things. The vintage action man collectors actively encourage customs as unless something is rare or mint the value isn't there

Us vintage Star Wars collectors have more of a 'preservation' at all costs ethos and in my opinion the majority of loose items just don't warrant the importance we put on them.

Just my 2 cents

Yeah I get what your saying about their being loads of loose items, but 10 years ago their was loads of MOC beaters about. For me it's absolute you can't say oh that's wrong that Prune Face has been 'U' graded and then say it's ok to start painting vintage AT-AT's. As I said before it's about values for me. :D 8)

Of course you can, there is a lot of grey area and we all draw our lines in slightly different places. :D

Should I not let my son play with his beaters as he will only damage them further, maybe even break them?

I admire your strong stance and if more people took this line the hobby might be in better shape but the reality of loose Star Wars items is there will be enough for customisers and collectors to keep going long after we have gone and until the plastic starts to degrade.

If numbers do dwindle noticeably prices will rise and the destruction will stop as painting a vintage AT AT would be akin to chucking a big pile of cash in the bin. This is very different from U grading where the destruction (embarrassingly) instantly adds value to the product.

It would be interesting to see the price of loose vintage items long after we have gone though. If Disney pushes the license to its potential you could be right TFU, everything vintage will continue to rise in value as the number of collectors grows and all sorts will be cherished by collectors. Personally I think once the people who collect due to childhood memories have died the market will flood and maybe crash, with fewer collectors feasting on an abundance of well looked after and graded items making lower quality loose items next to worthless, like so many are today due to their vast numbers.

BTW did MickGoth ever come back? Did we scare him off

I want to see the feedback from the buyer as personally I liked it. I wouldn't part with £50 for it but it reminded me of some of the Space Marine dioramas I used to love as a kid. :D

think the guy got scared off, i see nothing wrong in customising stuff, i've just repainted a legacy falcon, brought all the details out, nice job on that speeder palitoy, a little weathering really brings the details out.
Glad it sold and he got some cash for it
