Modern likes and dislikes, any good pieces?

I am a vintage collector like most of you and I'm sure there's a lot here that are vintage purists but I was just wondering what modern stuff people do like if any and why.

I must admit I don't like most of it and I think Hasbro are dicks for constantly churning out so much stuff. I do like the odd piece though and only really from the original trilogy(saying that I do have two jedi starfighters and two podracers somewhere 8) ).

I've got a POTF2 Lukes X-Wing which I like because the scaling of it, the proportions are much more accurate than the vintage X-Wing. Also got a Saga 06 Tie Fighter, again because the big wings are accurate and it looks great. I've got a set of Saga 06 figures but only the waves from the original trilogy, I think they're pretty cool.

So what are your modern guilty pleasures and does anyone like any of the vehicles/ships/playsets? Also, does anyone else think POTF2 figures are truly horrendous? :|

Some POTF2 figures are ok as they allow us to have certain characters that have never been in the line before. You look at the likes of the rebel trooper or R2-Q5, lovely stuff. And if you compare them to the moulds of today then the POTF2 line look like pure gold compared to todays modern crap! It really annoys me to see the black series with the little shitty skinny bodies but that's another story.
When it comes to modern likes there are a few. The majority are absolute dogger but, again, the stuff that isnt that common to us like the Power of the Jedi Carbon Freeze Chamber, the Shadows of the Empire Dash Rendars Outrider and the OTC Sandcrawler.

I actually have a bit of a soft spot for the POTF2 line - they hold a certain nostalgia for me, representing a collecting resurgence in the mid-90s that re-kindled my love of the OT.

I agree chiffy, great to see some of the figures that were never released originally - Tarkin, Garindan, Biggs, Slave Leia... worth it for that last one alone!

A while back I decided on a bit of a focus, to try and get an Obi-wan moc from every wave of figures, vintage & modern - he seemed an obvious choice that was likely to have at least one in each range. Only 5 or 6 in so far (funds are tight) but on its way.

Never like the He-Man body builder look of the first lot of modern figures, haven't got any in my collection apart from R2 (he didn't get the same gym membership as everyone else thankfully)
Was definitely the Vintage Collection stuff that got me back into collecting - seeing that style of cardbacks in toy shops was just like stepping back in time :D
Picked up a VC snowspeeder one year just before Christmas and thought it looked the business.

Yeah I get what you're saying about characters that were not in the vintage line, Peter Cushing was well shafted! I just don't like the look of them, especially the earliest ones, they're far too muscly. I think they improved further down the line, they got a bit slimmer and more normal looking.

I agree the black series small figures are proper ****, and really expensive. I like some of the big ones but not really the human faced ones, I've got a Fett and Sandtrooper.

Interesting idea to get every release of a charcter, wouldn't mind doing that with R2 or Stormtrooper although I think they've been releasing the same R2 figure for the last 19 years just in different packaging!

I might do a little random figure bit in my cabinet of any modern figures I like from whatever line, just for fun. Got some legacy Han and Luke stormtroopers which are cool, stuff like that.

I'm looking to pick up every OT (none of that prequel rubbish) R2 available. Great way to add lots of different card cardbacks to your collection and it doesn't have to be too expensive either.

Sorry for rubbish picture :D

ive got pretty much every slave leia across all the collections. I wanted a figure focus that wasn't too ridiculous to find, looked interesting enough. I've got her in lego, kubrick and action figure form. There's a picture in the modern acquisitions thread. Its fun to have a modern focus.. keeps you in touch without being too involved.

As for modern, go browse Jedi Business. Heres the Leia page, each page has some info and you can compare figs. http://www.jedibusiness.com/star-wars-figures.aspx?type=name&typeName=Princess%20Leia%20Organa

There are some brilliant pieces in the modern collections, the 30th anniversary collection has some great cardbacks, I loved some of the saga stuff, the Vintage Collection.. but some of the figs that came out which had a little extra, like ephant Mon, the Luke in bacta tank, Han with the torture device. Great figures. The mcquarrie concept figures are something worth checking out.

Overall, the best sculpted modern line were the episode 1 figures. Even though the cardback was dull.

i got all the POTF2 loose and carded i use the carded ones to get autographs but you are right they did do them a bit muscley i also collect all the characters from different lines to try and get every character and droid available as well as collecting vintage mmmm i think i need a bigger house :D

The later POTF2 figure line wasn't too bad once they had got past the body building stage. Personal favorite for me was the Vader with removable helmet as they kept the Sebastian Shaw version (I think that figure predated the SE films though)

Kinda liking the 6" black series... although I only have the Stormtrooper, Fett and 2 of the Fett with carbonite. Waiting for the Scout and Speeder to come along at a decent price.

Yeah I'm with ya on that one, they're the ones I like. Might try and pick up the Tie Pilot and Biker Scout. I just like the detail in them, the different size and all the accessories :)

I like a lot of the modern stuff and from 2002'ish onwards things have slowly got better in the land of 3 3/4 inch figures.

The Black Series
The Vintage Collection

The Legacy Collection
The Clone Wars Animated
Saga Legends
The 30th Anniversary
Revenge of the Sith
The Original Trilogy Collection
The Clone Wars

Have all produced some great figures and vehicles, with my favourite lines in bold

After the vintage collection (with the exception of the Black series) the packaging has taken a nose dive IMO. It was so cool seeing the modern figures on vintage cards. The Droid Factory, Mission Series and Movie Heroes have some great looking figures but IMO the packaging is crap.

Likes

Bantha as we never got one

Tie bomber for the same reason

some of the vintage line

black series again only some of it

& the gentle giants, I love the power droid :D

dislikes -

POTF range, the first lot that looked like (as has already been said) he man sculpts, WTF were they thinking.

a hell of a lot of the figures from most of the other series, as with most things, there's good & bad, sadly the bad outweighs the good by a bloody long shot IMO

Good call 8) The sets based on the films are quality, not so keen on the ones based on the EU though. Definitely holds it value better than most modern lines.

Couldn't believe when the missus got me one of these for my Birthday, its a cool addition.

Not sure I've seen the Bantha, what line is that from? Have to see if I can find it on rebelscum. This has been really interesting, just to hear what people like and then go and check it out. Seems a lot of people do like anything that wasn't in the vintage run. I still think a lot of it is crap compared to vintage and I don't get lego at all, but each to their own. One good thing about Star Wars toys still being sold I suppose is it might get a new generation of kids into Star Wars and collecting! So it's not just old gits like us :D

Star Tots 8) have a few and love em :p

I dont know if it's genetic but i just cannot abide Star Wars Lego. Maybe the price tag has kept me away from ever owning any? I saw the death star in Smyths at the weekend for just shy of £300! I'd rather spend that on a vintage cardboard effort.
